I haven't seen any comments on this, but Sony has announced DC Universe Online will be adopting a multi-tier subscription plan (including a free-to-play option.)

I've been playing a couple of days now and it's actually pretty good fun. Not your usual MMO-style of gaming and it's ''a bit PlayStationy'' but here that might prove to be a good thing.

Dunno how much long-term appeal it has but as a hack n slash game with great production values you could do a lot worse.

    What is the free-to-play option?

I gave it a try and it's essentially the same as all FTP games: you can apparently access most of the content free of charge but can pay (with "DCU points", which can be bought for cold hard cash) for certain extras.

Seems SOE hasn't been as aggressive in their marketing as, say, LOtRO has been from what I've played.
The marketplace isn't nearly as intrusive while the purchasable extras are mostly vanity items and nice-to-haves. Some of the powerups will no doubt have an impact on game difficulty and amount of grinding but at first glance it doesn't seem unbalanced at all.

There's also a very tempting ''higher level'' of subscription (Premium, I think) where spending $5 unlocks 4 additional character slots, opens up the AH and gives access to voice chat.

It's actually a lot of fun. Exploration is superb fun with Acrobatics (wall-crawl/glide/jump power) and the combat is a bit clicky-clicky but it's a nice change of pace.

Yeah it's okay as far as MMOs go, more action-oriented than the typical hotkey-based gameplay. It's a nice change of pace.

Still, I thought it becomes rather samey quite quickly, many of the quests are of the dreaded generic "kill X of Y" and "fetch so-and-so" type.
I also fear the late-game will turn into the usual "need healer" and "gief purple" nonsense (or whatever the DCU equivalent may be)

The character creation also has me a bit stumped: I've tried two of them and my second one is blatantly and significantly more powerful. I'd thought the powers would just be for flavour but either I'm missing something or it's a bit imbalanced.

But anyhow, worth trying especially considering one can do so for free now.

Having never really played either Champions or DC Universe i thought give both a bash over the weekend now that both F2P.

So far iam prefering DC universe because it feels 'new' where as champions is basically yet just another MMO but with bright colours and capes. I played City of Villians years ago and it is very simlier to that (not surprising as its cryptic) where as DC is more action orentiated. I like tradtional MMOs but is nice to have something different it could even stand its own ground as a RPG hack and slash not just a MMO.

Iam using the Green Arrow as the base for my character which probably has something to do with the action part what with all the arrows. Althourgh i am trying to go towards the stealth path.

Also the idea of a 'premium account' where just buy a few hundred points to unlock most of the features (such as auction) is frankly a brillant idea. I have already upgraded my account to premium as all the benefits it seams silly not to if plan to play for anymore than 1 hour althourgh i will need some conviving to go to Legendary status. Iam already at 7 hours played and only started on saturday. These are from play experiences after midnight mind, try playing DC during the day and its frankly not possible at the moment due to server overload.

Oh yeah - until somebody radically overhauls the way quests work (as they're claiming GW 2 will) I think it's pretty much a taken that there'll be plenty of Kill X, collect Y quests. Thankfully I haven't found them too grindy here and although it may be simplified, I like that it keeps it pretty tight so you don't have to go wandering too far to find quest mobs/objectives.

I agree - it feels very fresh and quite vibrant and I'm enjoying it a lot.

And yeah, I'm going to see about grabbing a game card next time I'm out and upgrading. Cryptic charge you about three times as much for 2 extra slots!

Been dipping into this occasionally and I've noticed the servers seem to be under severe strain the past two weeks or so.
Areas frequently fail to load or are out-of-sync compared to my character, that sort of thing. It makes the game unplayable at times :(

I wanted to try DCUO back when it first came out but thanks to lack of time and a few other problems I had at the time, the game was left in my 'To Play List' .
Recently, I saw that it was going Free-To-Play and I started playing it.
It's the best superhero MMO I've ever played. Neither City of Heroes, nor Champions Online can be compared with it.

The fast paced combat, the sets of abilities you can choose from are all done perfectly. I'll be actually writing my impiressions of the first 15 levels of the game on my blog, if any of you are curious, feel free to visit it.

I had deleted the game from my HDD, but cleared the space and started again since it's gone F2P. It installed and now it wants to download +-7GB. Is that all patches? I'm playing off the disc.

MMO's get patched a lot during their life installing it from a disk is not going to save you a lot of time in the end, I downloaded it off of steam and after downloading 9 GB and loading up the client it then said it needed to download another 13 GB. Strangely right now steam says it's taking up 14 GB of hard drive space while windows says it's taking up 23.2 GB of space.

Once you get around the weird archetypes (fire and ice damage-types are Tanks? WTF?) this game is fucking awesome. Best production values and most coherent, fun plot I've ever seen.

    You should all be playing.

Don't have a PC pad, don't have a PS3. Is K+M ok for this? Also, have their been any cosmetic improvements (and non-cosmetic) since release?

I know there have been patch notes etc. but I wondered if there were any stand-out improvements.

A tonne of raids, new PVP areas, additional power sets, additional gear, more storylines, etc. But nothing that has fundamentally changed the game mechanics.

I was thinking about the criticisms from the review - empty cities etc. Wondered if they'd fixed it.

How big was the download morriss, if you don't mind my asking? Was considering giving it a play but if it's the 20gb it says on Steam then I won't be trying it any time soon (15gb monthly download limit).

Jeez, I can't imagine having a download cap nowadays.
