Apple to discontinue the iPod classic?

(I briefly considered posting this in the "The murdering of a legacy" thread)

This TUAW post suggests it would be part of the rumoured "product transition" Apple is preparing this year. I have no sentiments regarding the Shuffle as it was a joke of a product anyway but the classic is a different thing. The iPod touch is hardly a replacement (memory's too small, plus I don't need a big touchscreen in a music player) and I dread the price Apple might come up with should they ever release a 128GB version...

Are there even any alternative mp3 players offering the same capacity without a touchscreen (excluding Zune)?

Who knows what they’re product strategy is. Just because they’re ditching the “classic” doesn’t mean they might not release some sort of alternative. They’re not idiots, far from it in fact. If there’s a market, they’ll address it.

Knee-jerk reactions based on rumours ftw.

I'm thinking of a 799$ Touch with 128GB. Or a new service, iMusic Cloud - all your music streamed to the player via 4G.

Ha, you should see the Macrumors comments...on second thought better not.

Classic is the only ipod I would buy, had my 120gb a few years now, starting to run out of space though. 90gb worth of music on it.

I used to be obsessed with having my entire music collection on me, and carried around a 250GB Archos brick everywhere I went.

After it broke the nth time, I got myself a 64GB touch to replace it, and really haven’t missed the storage. I think it’s quite an irrational mind state.

Yup, I paid almost €100 extra for the 32gb iPhone.

Almost two years later.... I shoulda just went for the 8gb one.

My 2005 60gb iPod Classic is still going, though it's mostly cradled in my sound dock to be used as a home stereo these days. The battery lasts about 5-6 hours now, used to be around 20.

Still, not bad value for all the years I've had it. Great little machine.

I had a 64gb Classic that served me well but I upgraded to a 32gb Touch, I can still fit most of my music on there. I will say that the novelty of apps wore off pretty quickly though, especially since I got a smartphone. I ended up deleting all the apps on the Touch to make room for music :)

My 160gb classic is still going strong, although Apple were right in ditching the double platter hdd to go down to 120gb max. Mine is a bit sluggish. Pleasingly indestructible though, I only use it for the gym where I've dropped it countless times.

With all the cloud stuff incoming, wouldn't surprise me if it was ditched, although I'm firmly in the local-storage-is-better camp.
