I mostly use Honey Queen, simply because she's a giant bee.

They're finally going to patch the shortcut on Mountain Wuhu Loop! Just not until July, when patching becomes available...

Ah cool! What does that mean for my time trial for that course though?

Where did you read that? From what I read, the system update is due next week and the MK patch is out in May.
  • Deleted user 21 April 2012 18:50:54
ND video def says may. still havn't picked this up yet, will probably bite pretty soonish.
  • Deleted user 21 April 2012 20:49:14
Oh right. I was reading on an old Nintendo blog this morning. It was one of only a few articles I got to read before heading off to work. A patch in May is better news, but it can't come quickly enough!

What I'm going to enjoy is the dickheads using the wuhu cheat still trying it on when the patch has come out And losing because of it

They'll all know soon enough, i'm sure. What i'll be most happy about is how little that track will be picked otherwise. The items are far too spaced out. I think there are 3 places in the entire course in which items can be obtained, which makes most of the second section completely dull.

Woo, finally three starred everything. It really is a cracking version of MarioKart - even on 150cc mirror, there's little obvious rubberbanding going on, apart from items of course.

I do like the difficulty increase. You're never guaranteed to win a race against the CPU, unlike Mario Kart DS, which I still rate highly.

Anybody else manage to hit themselves with their own red shell? I've done this a few times now and thought it was just bad luck, but now i'm beginning to think it's a glitch. I was playing online last night and witnessed one of my red shells miss hitting the kart in front, wrap around them, and then come back and hit me. I tried moving out of the way, but it homed-in. Was the difference between 2nd and 7th unfortunately.

Had it happen once. Think I was offline. Like you say, fired off my red shell, he dodged it and it came straight back for me.
  • Deleted user 2 May 2012 20:54:49
At least i'm not going insane! It happened again tonight too, funnily enough! This time it was in my favour. Some cheeky bugger had a red shell and let me through so he could use it. Made up for last night!

So you dodged it then? Do you know how you did that?
  • Deleted user 3 May 2012 09:45:22
I didn't do anything. It just missed me. Maybe I was just too close to him and lag played a part. He fired it, it passed alongside me and then decided to turn around and head back to him. I was lucky not have been hit both times.

I know red shells take a second to find their target before homing in, which is why it passed me, but I don't understand why it decides to home in on him. I've seen a similar scenario in which somebody again has fired a red shell at another, at close range. Again they missed, but the shell went off ahead and locked on the guy in front of them both. It's just an unpredictable mess.

If it was online, I'd put it down to either lag or the net code.

One benefit I assume you do have is you can at least see the colour difference between green and red shells.

I've never considered that the red/green shells would be a problem, but they're probably the two worst colours you could pick for colour blindness.

I finally found a kart combination that suits my style and allows me to use Wiggler! That thing is hilarious. His arms flail around like a skateboarder from the old Tony Hawk games and when he gets hit he turns red. Best character in the game, in my opinion!

I tried joining your session last night but kept telling me I couldn't do so in the end I got bored trying

Might have been a full room. I did notice you came online actually, but I didn't think about how populated the room was. I'll make a mental note for next time. It's a shame you can't send messages to point things like that out. :(

Yeah I would like some sort of notification to say if someone comes online or sends you a message/letter
  • Deleted user 4 May 2012 16:25:13
Well you get the orange light, but you have to jump out of the game to find out who it is. If you're arranging something, you'll probably figure it out, but you can't always hit the home button to find out, when playing online.

After what seemed like 40 minutes of moaning at myself for a number of questionable moments playing online, I did something brilliant. I avoided a Blue Shell with a mushroom. I heard it could be done on Mario Kart DS, but I never managed to pull it off. Tonight, however, I fluked it on this one. Better yet, the two people ahead of me came to a complete halt, giving me a ridiculous lead when I dodged the shell.

Unfortunately another Blue Shell hit me on the following lap and I came 6th out 7. Worst night of Mario Kart yet.

Any tips for racing online? Tried for the first time today and got absolutely slaughtered, last almost every time. Races seem incredibly tight and every time I was doing ok-ish (3rd or 4th place) I always seemed to be attacked loads of times on the last lap. I guess I may just be truly terrible at this game.

Defence is key, which isn't as bad as it sounds. You'll often get opportunities to attack, but it's best ensuring you're not going to get hit from behind. Obviously there's a lot of luck involved in getting through the middle of the pack, but it you can limit how often you're hit, you wont fall to the back of the pack.

You'll also notice that a lot of people use items almost as soon as they pick them up, leaving them weapon-less for the majority of the time between item pick ups. By holding on to an item a little longer, you can gain an attacking advantage.

Most importantly, however, is ensuring you gain enough coins to max out your speed. It's not as noticeable offline, but i've had races in which people have passed me with ease because I only have a couple of coins the entire race. Now I tend to focus on getting as many coins as possible on my first lap. For that first lap it's more important to me than track position. It sets you up nicely for the final two laps and gives a nice advantage over those who have taken a few hits and have few coins.

Hope that all helps. I do tend to have off-days from time to time, but I find I usually finish races quite highly if I stick to the above. You do get unlucky at times and sometimes the bad luck never seems to end, but these steps normally result in a good finish. According to my stats, i've won twice as many races as i've lost, not that I entirely get how that works lol.

Edit - How good are you at drifting? That really helps to. You have to nail it for almost every corner of every track. I find that boosting before you've come out of the corner really helps too. The way I see it, you lose speed through cornering and gain it on the straights. However, if you boost coming out of a corner, you'll have less speed to regain down the straights and thus hit top speed quicker. It also helps on twisty tracks, such as Koopa City, as you're cornering much faster, rather than overshooting the following corner because you've boosted too late.

Sorry if any of this sounds patronising or just plain stupid. It's just what works for me.

Couple of other tips for protecting a lead:

When you pick up an item like a green shell or a banana you can drag it behind you by holding down the item button - this gives you a one-use shield against many items.

You can fire most items backwards by holding down on the d-pad as you use them.

Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I'll be slightly less crap now.

If the patch is on the eShop doesn't that make it optional? Was hoping to get back into Mk7 but got bored of all the cheaters.
