'Studying the 80s' and 'living in the 80s' are two different things, evidently. -

That's what I had thought - ill be 30 next year and I don't bloody remember the thatcher years. Christ, I was 8 when she left office.

Registered 15 years agoThat's a fair point. There's no reference point for me though, I don't know if things were better before. I'd be inclined to think they're all as bad as the rest when they get their hands on some power - just to be clear I'm not pro thatcher by any means. I still got my milk in primary school though for some reason. -

Registered 17 years agoLol, reminded me of the great t shirt available to buy in a pub I walk past often. Simple black cotton short with the words 'When Thatcher Dies: Rot In Hell Thatcher'
Classic! -

All the weak companies that were being subsidised by the goverment-
In the specific case of BT they pretty much flogged off a massive monopoly with a licence to print cash. They didn't have effective competition for years. -

I like the idea that buying your council house was a roaring success too. In, part, it's Fucked over a generation from ever being able to own their own home. -
Damn it, I was about to start singing "the witch is dead" whilst dancing a lil jig. That was a cruel trick.
Edit: And having grown up in a very poor family in the 80s, I think it's best I stay out of the "serious" part of this conversation or else I'm liable to blow a fuse. Evil bitch, and I genuinely will jump for joy when she dies.

...oh my.
She single handedly took the country out of one of the worst recessions ever which Labour caused with their riduclous polices at the time. She invented privitisation, allowing people to buy their council houses, BT to actually get a phone in to people's houses, it used to take them 6 months or longer to get someone connected. All the weak companies that were being subsidised by the goverment collapsed and better ones took there place.
I had to study politics at A level and the 80's was the most exciting period to study. -

She was a relentless heartless cow BUT what she did needed to be done eventually. It could've been done a little less brutally but that might have made the pain last longer.
So yes she is a heartless bitch, but we needed that and that's what we got.
This current government is a little like that, but thankfully with a tiny bit of restrain thanks to the Lib Dems destroying themselves.
I said tiny bit! -

Registered 18 years agoSome things needed to be done. But was done in such a way that it destroyed communities and offered those affected absolutely nothing and no hope. Replacement jobs for thousands don't appear overnight in small towns, but that's what was kind of expected. Little re-training, incentives or anything. -

Registered 15 years agoHmm don't know about doing what "needed to be done". Something needed to be done, but not necessarily what was decided. Taking the railways, they were built and maintained privately for about 120 years and were only nationalised because social change and 2 wars had changed the playing field and the main companies had practically merged anyway. Nationalisation wasn't particularly successful either with huge closures and costs to run a system when there were fewer passenger than there are now so it's not a stretch to move it back to the private sector and remove the problem, though it's debatable it was the right thing to do and it was handled very badly and has continued to by successive governments - all you have to do is look at France's rail system to see how a nationalised rail network can work well. -

Registered 13 years agoThe Rail Network thing was fucked over on purpose anyway. Off record Tebbit himself has said that they deliberately broke it up so badly with the intention that it could never be put back together again. Quite sums up the mentality tbh. -

Yup, the railways are pretty much meaningless compared to what she did to the miners/ nationalised manufacturing companies.

Also, the railways ARE working better now, they just cost a shitload more

You can gauge her moral compass from her demeanour and how she deals with situations and people.
Granted that isn't necessarily conducive to a good leader, but to my mind she was like a perfect storm of reasons why some people dislike the English.
Speaking as an Englishman, watching footage of her on the history channel, I'm embarrassed by her pompous empire loving rhetoric.
