Dragon Age 2 for me, really bad game. The third one should be just press a button and let the whole story play out. The companions with the noticable exception of Merril were all dull, the same instance endlessly replayed, and considering the family was so important they were duller then a Gordon Brown speech. All the stupid bullshit as a result of that game didn't help. The endless 'żou don't like the game, you a PC Elitest' crap. KOTOR was originally a Xbox game, loved that, same with Jade Empire. It was just a sad attempt to cater to a mainstream audience where the developers consider mainstream to have the intelligence of a Amoeba. Surely the success of games such as Final Fantasy, Fallout New Vegas, Starcraft, etc shows that treating your consumers (which lets face it is how they see us) as reasoning adults who can manage the odd bit of strategy pays off. Shame, as I did love the first one, but that's the last DA game I buy.

Strangely enough still looking forward to MAss effect 3 and TOR, just hope the Dragon Age rot hasn't set in.

My vote goes for Duke, I also have not been able to get into battlefield yet. Which is a shame

@Dirtbox - Does that include multiplayer because it's the only reason I'm getting it this month? Is it better/on par with BC2?

And what's this about Uncharted 3 people, it's easily one of the most incredible games of 2011. Wouldn't have something to do with it being a PS3 exclusive would it?

LA Noire. Terrible, terrible game. You've seen everything the game has to offer in the first 15 minutes and the interrogation system is just broken and inconsistent. And people accused me of trolling the dedicated thread with these points on launch weekend. LOOK AT Y'ALLLLL NOW!!!!!!1111!!!

Dragon Age 2 was pretty poor as well.

I still haven't finished it, but I do enjoy it occasionally in little bite size chunks. I think the issue people have is initially the game impresses you, with the change of pace and investigating crime scene mechanic feeling almost like a breath of fresh air and making you wonder whats to come. The problem is nothing does come, the mechanics and basic structure from the first level/case remains the same throughout the whole game. This combined with very little challenge or skill involved when actually playing just put people off.

Closest thing I could compare it to would be the first Assassin's Creed, huge potential but your doing the same thing all the way through.

That said, I do like it. It's almost relaxing to play and after accepting the game is more of interactive story rather than some form of GTA game, I find myself enjoying the occasional case when I'm in the mood.

Personally I didn't have any major gripe with the game. Yes, there were flaws but game was far more than the sum of its parts. The interrogation sections would be rather pointless on their own, but in the context of the narrative they felt a lot more tense. And for me, the narrative was easily the strongest part of the game -- far better than anything else released this year.

I suppose you could compare it to Mass effect 1; a game that had dodgy controls, restrictive RPG elements and tedious side quests. But in the context of its excellent story, those elements combined to make something far better.

It would probably be my game of the year, if it wasn't for Skyrim.

Boothesda for going after Minecraft dev Notch. Yes, he is a pompous ass but at least he has earned that right. And no one will ever confuse a game called Scrolls for a game called Skyrim.

Brink, a PS2 quality game on next gen. It looked shit played shit and the gun customisation was laughably generic.

Brink - it was an 8/10 game ruined by the cripping lag every match and the visuals that had somehow taken a step back since earlier versions.

A patch and free DLC sorted it all out about 2 months too late - all the community had left it behind. Wasted time and money.

edit: Also, I really enjoyed LA Noire. I got absolutely absorbed in the narrative. Haters gonna hate y'all.

    Duke Nukem Forever

Yes, I know, everyone knew it would be shit, but it's the way that it was shit that was so painful. After all the hype and controversy over it's old-school design, it was so disappointing to see it resort to so many modern conventions. A two weapon limit, regenerating health, corridors funnelling the player into set-piece after set-piece. There wasn't even a single Keycard puzzle. :(

Dragon Age 2 without a doubt.

I liked L.A. Noire a lot, wouldn't have wanted to miss out on it. Quite surprised so many people mention it, it was pretty much what I thought it would be after the previews and videos.

    Brink and NFS: The Run.

Apart from those turds, I think it's been a good year, including most of the stuff you've all nominated (LA Noire & Rage)

Dragon Age 2 for me - dumbed down, rushed & slapdash cash in.

Dishonourable mention: Deus Ex HR: it's not that it's bad per se, it just... felt flat, medeocre and really really boring. Deus Ex in name only.

I actually quite enjoyed LA Noire, but I only played an episode per night which helped hide the flaws I think, would probably have a different opinion if I'd played for longer sessions.

Dragon Age 2 by a massive margin. I knew what I was getting with Duke Nukem.

    Mine has to be: Bodycount.

No, I didn't play the retail version, only the demo, but that's all I needed to play. I had been looking forward to it since it had been announced, it was supposed to be the spiritual successor to Black! With Multiplayer! I was certain it'd be fantastic. It wasn't.
Quite harsh, especially as your basing it on just the demo. I decided to ignore the reviews and picked it up for £8 and i really enjoyed it - Black was a poor story but had great weapons, Bodycount is exactly the same. The controls take some time to get used to but once they click this game is very enjoyable, especially for the £5-£10 price tag.

My vote for SOTY goes to : Homefront
It was being talked up as a COD/Battlefield beater but wasnt even close. Terrible graphics and uninspired gameplay - a HUGE disappointment.

LA Noire (Ps3) and Dragon Age II would be my votes..

LA Noire was such a chore to play, and i really tried to like it, but 8 hours in, and all hope for the game to shine, had vanished..

Dragon Age II should have been more like the first game, instead it felt like a spin-off, and definetly not a good one!

Another vote for LA Noire. It was a decent enough game, but given the hype, the anticipation and the critical acclaim I was expecting something really special.

Now that the dust's settled, it wouldn't make it into my top 5 for the year (and I've not even played Skyrim or Arkham City yet).

Brink. Just utter utter dog shit after all the hype it had pre-launch. EG should be very ashamed of themselves for that review.

An average game made even worse by terrible lag and brain dead AI. The much talked about customisation was utterly pathetic, the guns felt like pea shooters, and the constant radio chatter in accents that Jim Davidson would think were too broad was incredibly irritating.

Yes, I'd forgotten about Test Drive Unlimited 2. A brilliant idea and huge potential but such an awful staggering clusterfuck of problems.

The worst thing is that a lot of us still actually quite like it and hate ourselves for it.

Have to agree on the general consensus that Battlefield 3 was very disappointing
Haven't been so hyped for a something since i saw the Star wars episode 1 the phantom menace trailer and then the movie ( enough said).

Also Deus ex was really boring and slow and couldn't get into it!!

But my biggest turd of the year has to be Ace Combat Assault Horizon as it's
Soooooo repetitive repetitive repetitive etc etc
