Normally for Christmas my wife and I just buy a turkey crown. This year they were just so expensive, to the point where we ended up buying a small whole turkey as it was £6 cheaper.

Now I figured I'd stuff it with an orange and stuffing, but I thought I might as you lot to see if you had any better ideas.

Well, that and to use this thread title. Huhuhuhuhuh stuffing.

For a saving of £6 I would have just gone with the crown!

If your bird is crowning DO NOT attempt to stuff it.

That £6 bought the majority of the rest of our Christmas dinner. A worthwhile saving.

Here we go then. Hey, hey hey, who's for a lovely juicy bit of
breast? Ah-ha-hahahahaha! I love Christmas! Hey, Eddie, are you
a leg or a breast man?

Can't find a video of it immediately but Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall made a 10-bird roast on River Cottage a couple of years back.

    Ultimate guide to stuffing

Indeed, I once made this mistake. I was desperate and tried to see if I could slip some stuffing in somewhere. Nah, it got really messy.

Any time I've stuck the stuffing in the carcass it comes out as a stodgy icky mess that doesnt make it near the plate.

Stuff it full of citrus fruits and maybe an onion to bulk out the breast and get some flavour through the meat. Take your sausagemeat stuffing and cram it between the breast and skin instead of butter for some pork fat basting goodness.

Thanks to the power of TV advertising we're going for one of those Aldi four-bird roasts for New Year.

    A bird-within-a-bird-within-a-bird-within-a-bird.

bread stuffing only gets stodgy if you pack her too tight, you need a nice loose fitting carcass to accomodate the girth required of a bread based stuffing.
  • Deleted user 12 December 2011 13:57:20
Not too loose, though. You need a little friction.

Take your quail, stuff it inside a partridge. Stuff that inside a chicken. That inside a turkey. That in a small goat. That in a deer. The deer in a suckling pig. Lastly, stuff the pig inside a bear.

Gas mark 4 for a week and you're sorted.

Really? Just put it under the skin. I've done a roast chicken like that with spinich, feta and things and it turned out fine.

Got it for christmas dinner last year when it was a mere 3 bird roast and it was absolutely dynamite.

I wouldn't recommend putting it inside the carcass, I normally put garlic, onions, a lemon and a herb bundle in there.
I stuff the stuffing between skin/breast along with some butter, then fold the skin under the bird and secure with a toothpick. Lovely.
The stuffing keeps the breast really moist and transfers some flavours into the meat :)

How did you get all your trimmings for £6?
I assume this turkey is frozen if you're buying it now, have you thought about brining it? It makes SUCH a difference.

Not all, but most of. Veg, stuffing, pigs in blankets, cranberry sauce, Christmas pudding and all of that. £6 goes a long way if you're not a goose fat loving ponce

Don't put anything inside the carcass.
The heat needs to get in there to cook the thick breast meat from behind.

    Only stuff the neck end.

Another good spot is between the skin on the breast. You can easily separate the skin from the breast and put stuffing/cranberries/butter/etc in to there to flavour the breast meat and keep it moist.

/is aware that post is an EG f'nar f'nar minefield :)

Iceland are advertising a four-FISH roast this year. Which has got to be the silliest thing I've ever heard.

Even one roast fish is one too many.

hmmm, could try something zany this year and and stuff a fish in the bird. Sort of a "Beak 'n Reef" feast.

It's a goose for us this year, stuffing that would be a bit gauche so none if that cavity filling nonsense for me.

Paxo balls on the side instead.
