TBH I cant remember how far up flush / rapid fire is. I've had a pretty high soldier turnover since I started playing classic! As I said I've also always just dismissed flush, I just wondered whether anyone had found a use for it.

I usually went with two snipers, so if I used assault at all it would be as bait and to uncover the enemy. So, flush and the rapid reaction perk were good. This works just fine in NI but in CI you need all the offensive strength you can get and you need it early in the game too. So, rapid fire is the better option for CI, I think.

You obviously don't work for the MOD.

I agree with most of that. But surely charging round the back of the enemy to unload two shots leave you open to being hit / flanked by other enemies? Don't get me wrong, I've always set up my assualts they way you have suggested, but was just wondering if there may be a way to use the assauly in a slightly different way. Like maybe having tactical sense (for extra defense) and flush on an assualt with a rifle rather than a shotgun may help in moving a camped up alien on high ground and overwatch to move from his spot so your squad can move up safely. I guess disabling shot would work in that situation too though.

I've been wanteing to try using my support in a way other than medic. Just cant keep them alive at the moment!

Fair point re the cover, I'm just trying to think of ways to make the early game a bit easier!

I thought you were going to say play on easy :)

I think Asia and SA are the only places I haven't tried. I'll try Asia next

I can't seem to select a resolution higher than 1280 x 768 on this game. Any ideas what to do?

Started in Asia - still getting one shotted by sectoids! They killed my only heavy in the first council mission, which was a bit of a setback.

Although I've managed to get to month 2 this time and built the OTS and got my half price squad size upgrade which was nice.

I began a Classic Ironman game. Chose Africa to start. So far after four months, I've got all laser weapons and carapace armour, researching Titan armour and plasmas, four of the new aircraft in hangars, got 13 countries covered in satellites (the other 3 pulled out), and only two deaths.

Either I'm lucky, fortunate, or skilled, or all three.

After the current UFO landing mission is done, I'm off to assault the alien base... wish me luck ;)

To compare, I'm just starting month 4. I have carapace, laser rifles, laser pistols, currently researching precision lasers.

I have coverage over 6 (i think - maybe 5) countries, and have already lost 2. Once my thermo generator is complete I will be constructing the containment facility and will focus on captures.

So either I'm crap, or you are really good. Or a mixture of both!

On the plus side, I have done the last two or three missions without so much as a scratch, and I am starting to build up a decent squad of soldiers. I just have a feeling I have fallen too far behind with my research and it will come to bite me in the arse over the next month or so.

    Started in Asia BTW.

I've been thinking of starting another Classic Ironman but with some modifiers to make it more interesting, maybe go for a long game ... I wish they'd do a DLC to add some spice, a few new weapons, armours, enemies, and I'd be chuffed.

First terror mission went surprisingly well actually. I was lucky that I started with quite a few civs near me so that took the pressure off having to hunt them down.

Having a squad sight sniper is essential though. Wouldn't have been able to do it without him thats for sure.

    Ah classic....

It was all going so well. Just came up against 7 mutons at once in an abduction mission. It was a small map so whenever i moved i seemed to uncover more. So i manage to take them out, but at the cost of my best heavy who is bleeding out (no medkits - great). My only assault is on one health as is my rookie when 3 thin men appear. Great. So one supresses my support which removes his cover while the gets a critical ( i managed to take the other one out). I dash said support to furthest cover. Reaction shot misses. Great. But it managed to hit the car he had taken.cover behind. Car blows up. Dead support.

Gotta love classic. At least i completed the mission though which was some consolation.

I'm halfway through a battleship currently, and once I got through one door at the bottom of a ramp near the start, I spawned three Mutons, who then dragged along 3 Muton Elites and 3 Heavy Floaters on the next turn for shits and giggles.

Somehow I've managed to make it through all that with only a 12 HP wound to my newly earned female Heavy Captain (from a Council mission) which a medikit patched up. I'll be playing through the rest of the battleship tonight...

I deliberately made sure I had the satellite coverage available to deploy at the end of each month, using the monthly earnings. So month 1, I bought one satellite. At the start of month 2, using the money gained, I bought an uplink and 3 satellites straight off, making sure the uplink was adjacent for the bonus. Likewise at the start of month 3, and then month 4 (didn't have the resources to buy a satellite nexus). Buying an uplink and the satellites was the FIRST thing out of the budget when I got money at the start of the month.

Likewise I generally held off deploying new satellites until a day or two before the end of month to deliberately reduce panic where need be, and keep countries in XCOM that might have been on five star red alert.

So by now, I have 13 countries covered and 3 have withdrawn, with stealth satellites also in place. So I doubt I will see another abduction mission all game...

I am going to have 3 satelites to deploy at the end of this month but after this abduction mission I will have about 5 countries on red panic. I've only lost two countries so far and I think I'll be losing a couple more, unless I get lucky with an abduction, council mission or terror attack.

I'm ok with that though. I'm tempted to use those 3 satelites to get full coverage over Europe as I am about to build a workshop. I'll have to see how the land lies the day before the council report!

It is tough to prioritise as there is so much needed in the first few months and so little resources. Its what makes the game great though IMO.

I was deliberately picking abduction missions to either reduce or ignore terror alert status. For instance, if a country was already on five bar red alert, I would not do an abduction mission there; the terror alert can't get any higher, the country won't pull out if you don't go, and I'd just chuck it a satellite by month end to reduce it back to three bar.

Sure you still have to consider the overall continent status as well going up, but nothing that deploying a satellite or two didn't mostly solve either. You can ignore the other countries in the continent where you start if need be, as you already begin with the continent bonus by starting there.

I also prioritised the abduction missions where possible: Engineers > Money > New Soldiers > Scientists. As I discovered you don't need to even build a lab, but scientists will slowly accumulate anyhow, and you don't need to rush research early on while getting yourself into a stable satellite and income situation. Workshops however, will give you great rebates when you buy and build stuff, and you'll be doing lots of that, so I've constructed quite a few.

Currently I'm on month 6 I believe, the only things left that I really need are ghost and psi armour, and I'll get one of those to research once I've completed the current hyperwave research...

Sounds like you are in pretty good shape.

My satellite strategy is to generally ignore South America as they don't offer much cash reward for sats and I'm not too interested in the continent bonus. Its therefore a good place to let panic while concentrating on other areas. I genereally dont satellite my 'home' continent as I already have the bonus. Otherwise there are certain countries I like to satellite ASAP (namely USA and Russia) and panic dictates the rest.

I do usually let panic dictate which abduction mission I go for. If its a 50/50 it all depends on what I need most at the time. Ranked soldiers I find really useful early on in CI.

I've been recovering from food poisoning the last couple of days, hence no update. Anyhow, classic ironman beat, give me my medals and achievements :p

Well it did, but only after attempting the final battle twice due to it crashing (!) during the end cut scene the first time...
