Anyone know of any connection diagnosis apps? I don't know what it is (I suspect DNS), but sites seem to be taking an age to initially load for me, despite having a ludicrous connection and a stupidly low ping.

Seemed to happen after switching from BT to Zen, so I'd assume there's something in the default settings on the router that I should probably tweak.

The quickest thing to do would probably be to set your phone or whatever to manual IP with 8.8.8.8 as the the DNS then grab another device with automatic settings and compare and contrast.

I think the router might actually be set to 8.8.8.8 but I'd need to check.

If you're on Mac/Linux, then things like `dig` and `traceroute` will be useful in figuring out where this lag might be.

@Psychotext I use Ookla. Web-based on speedtest.net or their respective apps.

@Psychotext Have Zen support not been any help? I thought that was their USP

Not been in contact with them yet. Wanted to cover the obvious stuff first.

Woohoo, getting upgraded to 10GBit/s a week on Tuesday. Pity I cheaped out with my Mac mini and only have a 1GBit/s connection.

90% of that going to waste :(

…and then what does your router support for your wireless - ~1200Mbps?

…and then what do your clients support?

    :p

Welcome to the wonderful world of 10Gb routers and SFP+ incompatibility.

We've been having random drop-outs on our regular copper broadband every couple of days and it's a nightmare trying to even persuade the ISP's "tech support" that if the issue isn't one of the four most common things on their script that it actually exists.

I get that they probably get a lot of queries from people with generic complaints about wi-fi being flaky around the house, but when we've discussed repeatedly that my issue is the router completely dropping the connection to the internet, not the connection between the router and devices being a bit weak, I really don't care how many times you change the wi-fi channel back-and-for between 3 and 11.

@bzzct Can't they run a test to see where the problem lies (exchange to cabinet, cabinet to home, within home)?

Sure they can run one. Doesn't mean it finds the issue.

Aye, I just ran Speedtest on my laptop, only 871 down/621 up so not even maxing out my current measly 1 Gbps...
The router has 1 x 2.5Gbit/s and 3x 1Gbit/s ethernet connections so max I'll be able to get on Speedtest is 2.5 :(

It was a free upgrade so why not.

Nope, can't be sniffy if it was free! I'm just on boggo 40Mbps :D At least I got that upgraded from the ~13 or so just in time for lockdown last spring.

300mbps line being installed on Monday. This was a timely reminder to order a gigabit switch, current one is only 100mbps

What do you have just now?
    Could be a noticeable upgrade.

80/20 nominally, but usually get 70/18. Which tbf is still seems to be enough for our purposes but it'll be nice to have a bump up.

This thread makes me sick, I'm lucky if I'm getting 5Mb/s, it's regularly around 2.

We have decent internet round our way. It must just be near dial up in the *far* north! 😃

Are you in in the Black Isle or am I mixing you up with someone else?
