Was that meant for the international football thread?

    /o\

We have decent internet round our way. It must just be near dial up in the *far* north! 😃
Dougs hails from the sprawling metropolis of the Isle of Wight, it's had to compete with such a high tech place :)

I don't hail from here, I just happen to live here. Thankfully on the outskirts of the biggest town, not out in the wilds of West Wight. Where the internets is indeed shite. Same as most rural places really, but it's improving.

    My apologies, Dougs.

Yup that's me. In my cottage in the woods in the lee of a hill. It's a perfect storm of shite.

@Fake_Blood in the middle of nowhere, what's really annoying is there's a fibre line running about a mile away from me. I've even tried the 4g route, which has peaked at 17 Mb/s unfortunately it drops out completely quite regularly, fucking trees.

@Dougs Got one on my roof, it's pointed through a wee gap in the trees to the nearest LOS transmitter about 20 miles away. It's shit.

I'm possibly putting an offer in for a house tomorrow, which should in theory, if I get it, give me a speed up to 60Mb/s :o

Haha, fair enough. Good luck with the offer! Looks an amazing part of the world to live in. Only spent a long weekend in the Highlands and found it genuinely breathtaking.

It is lovely, but I'm feeling a little isolated these days, looking forward to maybe getting a little more civilised.

@Armoured_Bear In the closest village to me, Avoch. It's not as pretty but still a nice place to live. It's got a pub and a shop and it's by the sea :)

@darrenb 😂 it'll be transformative for me. Over the years I've lowered my expectations of life.

Öand then what does your router support for your wireless - ~1200Mbps?

Öand then what do your clients support?

    :p
Not only that, but you also have to be downloading from servers that are able to deliver those kinds of speeds.

I basically never have speeds above 500Mb/s.

Maybe I'm being naive here but what kind of uses are there for which higher speeds make a meaningful difference beyond about 100Mb/s?

Downloading games? They are often around 50-100GB. I get 300-500Mb/s on Xbox Live.

Sure, just seems like quite rapidly diminishing returns. I get about 10Mb/s line speed on a standard broadband line, which translates to actual game downloads happening at about 1-2 Mb/s, so sure it would be *nice* with speeds say 10 times that to download a game in an hour rather than teeing it up in advance overnight, but I wouldn't pay that much more every month even for that, let alone speeds 100x faster.

Not knocking it - just curious if there were advantages I was overlooking beyond the obvious.

If/when openreach eventually get round to connecting my bit of town to the ultrafast goodness, I do think I will probably be happy to pay for up to about the 300 mark. We already have 80down (sorry Goban!) which is ok, but faster would be nice. Not sure we have need for any faster capacity beyond that at the moment.

Sadly openreach appear to be trolling me by connecting pretty much everywhere else in town around us, but not our area!

Don't think I've been around there, been up Black Isle way a few times for weddings in dornoch, evanton/Alness areas though. Definitely a nice neck of the woods to live.

Albeit with less than ideal internet speeds for some. :-D

Hahaha, it's an utter hell hole. The house I'm trying to buy is the one you can see the gable of with dormers just behind the main cluster of boats on the harbour.

Full fibre finally installed, 300 symmetrical. Although I didn't realise their router only had one ethernet port, which meant I can't connect both the wifi mesh and the ethernet switch that hard-wires in my kit under the telly. They are sending me another switch. Now to bin off Sky and the landline.

    Bastard!

I'm still stuck on FTTC and in an area that's not on any kind of priority list, but thankfully at least I'm pretty close to the max speed of FTTC.

Yeah, that was me and tbh, 70Mbps was fine for us really. Can't say I noticed any real issues. But this was an offer, £22 a month. Bargainous.

The 800Mb fibre we had installed earlier this month is glorious. 4-500Mb ish over wireless. 950Mb wired.

Never seen them synchronous, but upstream is usually around 75% of down, which is still faster than Iíve ever experienced from home.

    Itís game changing. Love it.
