Galaxians - God yeah! Two colours - in one sprite! I was gobsmacked.
Seeing Tomb Raider on a demo unit in the local shops. That stunned me.
Walking up the staircase on your left at the very start of Doom.
Seeing the opening graphics in the Hobbit for the first time.
Running the copy of Breakout that came on the tape you get with your Spectrum. -

Registered 15 years agoMy top 5 (in no order):
1. Robotnik: Doomsday Zone - Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Uttely awesome. The music fits perfectly and it really feels like it's the last chance you have to beat Robotnik as he tries to flee.
2. Fox's Father - Lylat Wars
Still brilliant. Utterly brilliant.
3. Ganon - Legend Of Zelda Ocarina of Time
Ganondorf has been defeated. But what's that noise? Oh, he's not dead and has turned into his old school version for one last fight. Stripping Link of the Master Sword and forcing you to fight without for the first bit was great and using light arrows to stun him as you go for the kill was brilliant.
4. Mother Brain - Super Metroid
Earlier your little metroid returns as a massive metroid and nearly kills you but doesn't. It remembers who you are. Mother Brain proves to much for Samus and she can't beat it. In one of the most awesome moments of gaming EVER, the metroid appears and attacks Mother Brain and then sacrificies itself to imbue samus with uber powers.
5. Cyborg Ninja and Liquid Snake - Metal Gear Solid
The cyborg being Gray Fox was cool enough but the bit at the end where he sacrifices himself and you end up having to fight Liquid three times before he dies is unforgettable. Even then you don't really beat him.
I think I'm sold by the whole atmosphere for boss fights in games. The mechanics don't have to be the best, it has to feel like you're fighting something that you shouldn't be able to beat but things you've learned/earned in game make it memorable. -

Registered 20 years agoCrikey. Too many to name but right up there would have to be the moment in Homeworld when you take your mothership out for its first shakedown, then get back to your home planet to find it's been razed.
One of those sublime moments of gaming that just fires you up to get through the entire rest of the game wanting revenge. Beautifully done.
Thread's a bit spoiler laden innit? -

Registered 13 years agoWell, I have to add some:
- when you finally get to "kill" Andrew Ryan (would you kindly remember this?!);
- when Cloud finds out that all his memories, well, aren't really his;
- the scene when Solid Snake shoots himself in the cemetery... was freaking starting to cry! -
Running around the castle gardens in Mario 64. Going from looking at the joypad wondering if I'll ever get used to it, to joyfully prancing around, leaping from tree tops and swimming with fishs within just a minutes was quite fantastic.
Oh Nintendo, what happened to you!
-
The opening level of Turrican II on the Amiga. Brilliant music and wonderful game mechanics. -
Oh, I also remember trying out Shadow of the Beast (II?) on the Amiga 500 as a wee kid and being scared to death. Bloody wall with spikes crushing me near the start
-
That was a good one too, LOOK AT TEH PARALLAX! -

Registered 16 years agoThe first one that sprung to mind for me was tomb raider. Not so much the t-rex scene but just that initial feeling of awe at looking around the 3d environment coupled with the amazing sound/score. -

It's going to take something very special to beat that moment for me. Nothing's really come close since. -

Registered 17 years agoSingle most memorable moment in gaming... hmmm... seeing those jaggies in Halo 3 for the first time and wondering the hell whether I was playing a state-of-the-art Xbox 360 game or an upscaled Xbox game with better textures by mistake.
Oh sorry... you mean *good* memorable moment...?
Ah... well then... that would be exiting the dungeon in Oblivion for the first time and realising that I had the whole beautiful world to explore. Unforgettable. As was the game.

Mine's along those lines but it was flashback! The animation amazed me at the time i thought it was fantastic. Many an hour spent on my Amiga playing that. -

Registered 16 years agoDunno if its been mentioned, but the first Zombie Dog in Resident Evil.
The first time I was ever scared by a game. -
Seeing a Space Invader arcade machine for the first time, and hearing to noise it made. I had to get a plastic crate to stand on to play it.
