Putting a side control issues, the actual game itself isn't all that great. It's light fun but nothing really stands out and grabs you for that one more go factor.

Played some more - the air shit is pretty good but the ground stuff is really bobbins still. Will continue though.

Sounds more like a 7/10 game than the 9/10 EG gave it. Need to think a bit more about whether to get it.

Gonna sell it I think, CEX give 22 cash. I'm skint at the moment so may sell Resident evil revelations so will get 40 for both.

It's definitely not one of those games that's going to have broad appeal, but it has a good retro vibe to it. It's worth slapping up the difficulty as that's where the enjoyment is to be had. It's all about the challenge. If you're breezing through the game on a low difficulty, you're going to get bored.

I can't defend the controls though. Whilst touch screen aiming is both faster and easier, it's just not as comfortable. Some people will be able to deal with it, others wont. It's definitely not commute material either, as you need something to support the weight of the console.

It's just screaming for dual slider support, more so than even MGS is. Hopefully developers stay away from this kind of control method from now on. Either use the touch screen or use the face buttons. Don't mix and match.

I haven't got the game yet but I think you lot are writing of the multiplayer a little too quickly and I am not surprised as tbh the first time I played Smash Bros I thought wtf is this mess. It was only after getting convinced by a couple of mates to give it a real go that I realised it was one of the most unique, varied and deep multiplayer games available.

Isn't there also an option to use the circle pad to aim and the ABXY buttons to move
  • Deleted user 23 March 2012 12:42:49
There is indeed, but I imagine that's a lefties only thing. Not even in the N64 days could I aim with my left thumb. I crossed my hands over so I could aim with my right hand. Kicked a lot of ass too. Almost unbeatable against my friends. That's just not possible with the 3DS. :(

Just went into hmv to buy it - but they didn't have it. Just some boxes saying that I could preorder it. Completely useless.

I am not going to lie, the game does have some issues but i still think it is fun. I have died 5 times now on the difficulty 3.4, each time was because I managed to dash off the side of something about 10 times in a row. The dash is very sensitive when using the ABXY (press the button twice and you dash, not normally a problem but when you are trying to edge around a small area it is a needed) I may need to invest in a CPP if I want to do the later levels on a harder difficulty but apart from that I like the controls. Sometimes it sucks being left handed!

I have to ask this, who here balances the bottom of their console on their pinky finger? I find it takes the weight of the console when travelling, though it does start to hurt after a few hours and I have noticed my little finger has become slightly deformed lol

I do that quite often but I think for this game thats where the cramps are coming from due to the L button being the shoot button!

Just done another chapter and I must admit I'm warming to it a lot after that...

I had a play at lunch, about half an hour and wasn't getting any cramp, I just rest it on the little finger of my right hand and that seems to work.

Online was pretty hectic, but it looks like it could be good, it was nice and quick to get a match which is always good. I stuck the difficulty on 4.0 for the 2nd level and it was a bit touch and go a couple of times as to whether I would make it. The first level was a bit too easy to be a challenge so it would probably get a bit boring playing it all through like that.

There is a little article on Nintendo Life about stuff they were not allowed to mention in the review until the game is out. No real spoilers except the number of chapters in the game and unlockable extras.

The same embargo also stopped some sites posting their reviews so a few more came out today.
    Games Radar
Gametrailers also have one but I am not going to watch it because of spoilers

I've been reading on other forums that some folks are using the old DS Phat thumb straps on the screen to replicate slider aiming. Can't imagine it's much more comfortable, but I think i'm going to have to test it out now.

Yeah, I'm considering doing that if I do end up ordering that. I do think using the stylus (especially my x-stylus) will have a clearer view of the screen, but the thumb strap means you can support the console with your right hand as well.

More I play, the more I'm absolutely loving it. Feel a bit bad for not giving it enough chance at first.

This game is mega fun and the visuals and audio are outstanding. Didn't have too much trouble with the controls either, although it definitely took a few hours to feel fully confident. Only drawback is the hand cramp, but sometimes you can't have pleasure without pain...

@DFawkes I had considered this, especially as I think I may have street passed the staff seeing as I passed someone who was playing the game last week, and had an impressive collection of puzzle pieces.

As a lefty I'm guessing this is pretty much unplayable yes? Such a shame as it looks ace.

@Cadence, the CPP peripheral would make it easier.

It's an awesome game. Control is great after you learn the ropes.

The stand is a boon, even works in your lap. Wouldn't work with the CPP though.

@Cadence Hey, I'm a leftie too and I am loving this game aswell. I don't have cpp but using the face buttons xyab is actually a lot easier then you would think. I have put a fair few hours into this already and I still want to play more.

Just bought this today, have to say I think it's absolutely ace so far, looks packed full of extras just like Smash Bros too! The Brawl style menu screens are awesome.

Haven't had too much difficulty with the controls either yet, I'm a lefty and just moved everything to the face buttons, N64 style. Done 2 chapters on 2.5 difficulty so far, breezed through both so may have to up the difficulty. Had a quick go at the MP too and enjoyed it a lot, when players get proficient that could be a lot of fun too.

Between the game, the stand, the AR cards and all the in-game collectibles, looks like Nintendo have really spoiled us with this title, and I can see myself getting a lot of life out of it.

My temptation towards buying this game is severely tempered by the fact that the titular Kid Icarus looks (and sounds, going on the trailers) fucking annoying.
