After all this chat, been looking at the Bassbuzz site, and just watched Josh's introductory video.
"This is for you if you've been noodling for ages and not getting anywhere."

    Yep, that's me.

I think making a financial commitment might be the kick I need - I know there's a million Youtube videos out there, but there's always something else that gets in the way. If I've stumped up 140 (or whatever it works out at), I'm going to want to get my money's worth.

One thing though - just about every bass player I've seen has freakishly long fingers. I've got stumpy little fingers - am I always going to struggle with fretting?

@boo Nah, I've seen some fucking amazing bassists over the years that bassically have little fat sausage fingers. Conversely I've got freakishly long fingers and I'm fucking shite.

That's what I did. Because I'd stumped up the cash, it made me see the course through. It's pretty great.

@quadfather Ha ha. I very much understand. That looks sodding beautiful man. Why the fuck not. If you can, then do. Life's too short etc etc.

    @boo

I'd just go for it - he even has techniques for people with different shaped hands - he tries to cover all areas.

I'd hugely recommend the courses - you will definitely come out the end knowing a fuck ton more about playing the bass - and they're enjoyable. Plus you can spread the cost of 3 or so payments - makes it much easier.

And each course has it's own PDF's of all the music you cover, along with q&a's for every single track. Plus you can download it all too if you want. You just get everything, plus it's so much fun.

And yes, if you pay, it helps get you into a routine too and you'll stick with it.

It's like the ultra P - the first one is the main volume, second one pans between each pickup. Then it gets a little confusing - the third one is dual stacked, so the top one does the active bass, and the bottom does the active treble (or the other way round, I'll have to check), and the last one does the active midrange and also the passive tone.

So, in passive mode, you just use volume, pickup pan and passive tone, which is just like a normal jazz bass.

In active mode, the passive tone dial is deactivated, and all the Active ones become active, so instead of dialing up the passive tone, you get your bass, mid and treble activated and dial in whatever tone you want.

    Basically, passive = jazz bass
Active = Jazz bass on steroids

This is all awesome mate, well produced! I really like Lydia on the Punk album. The second album - that's by a different band name - you got two going?

@wuntyate That's seriously impressive dude, I can't imagine how much work that's been, between writing, recording, producing, artwork etc. Amazing effort. Also, listening to your singing on the metal album makes my own throat hurt - how do you even do that?! :D

I like what I've heard of the punk album, it's pretty tuneful and nicely energetic. The metal stuff is not really to my tastes I have to admit but it sure sounds like metal to me :)

And yeah the production just sounds proper. Like it should. You'd never guess it wasn't done by a professional.

Sadly I think I've probably forgotten everything I learnt on Reaper last summer. Not even launched it since then :(

Yeah that's tons of work that's gone into it. We've only managed to demo 6 tracks out of 18 so far and I know how much work that took so that's well impressive mate, well done! \o/

Well at home I have a markbass 121p combo amp which is gorgeous. At the studio I use a musicman stack which will shatter car windscreens if necessary :)

Thanks chaps! I know it's not really to your tastes but cheers for listening and your lovely words of loveliness.

@monkman The metal vocals have taken a few years definitely, but I can maintain for a few hours at a time these days so I don't find it too difficult anymore. The thing that'll fuck me is sustained high notes (some of the punk choruses) or just if I don't warm up enough and go full tilt with the harsh vocals too early. Generally the days of me losing my voice after a big sesh are gone though. Thankfully!

@quad Lydia's my fav as well! Yeah we have actually 3 projects. One is punk, one is metal and we have another project and a 5 track EP out in 2 weeks that's basically hard rock with punk and metal elements, the tunes for which we used to gig years ago and that's the band that we're going to try and get going live again, I'll post a wee link when that ones out!

To be fair it's my guitarist mate who is very much the driving force. I wouldn't have managed this much on my own as I'm too fucking all over the place mentally but he just keeps churning stuff out and pushing us on to write and record so it really motivates me. I'm a graphic designer anyway so I quite enjoy doing all the artwork etc.

Huh, I seriously thought you'd say oh, we know someone who does the artwork, but no, that's you as well! You're a busy man. Don't buy Returnal, you haven't got time for it :D

It's fucking unbelievable - the active side is exactly what I was after - it doesn't make it mentally loud like the ultra P does - it just accentuates the richness of the jazz. It's fucking brilliant. Oh my god.

@monkman76 Lol, I know. I'm bloody addicted to video games as well which really doesn't help, so I genuinely would get nowhere without someone urging me on. It doesn't help either that I have my typewriter out calling to me and I'm trying to finish a story I'm working on, and trying to learn this sax as well. I'm a fucking flake and I need 50 hours in a day.

It's a great setup you've got with the guitarist - it really shows in the music. You need someone like that to kick the creative people up the arse all the time - our guitarist is the same. He was round mine last night because he was walking his dog and had an idea in his head and we jammed it out for half hour.

    Cool artwork too!
