Me and the other guitarist have had a couple of sessions with our amps and cabs now (loving this Boss Katana) and got them both sounding damn good together. Just need the rest of the band....

I had forgotten how hard singing and playing is though. Will take me a bit. I used to do it no sweat over complicated bass lines but I'm even struggling with basic rhythm guitar parts.

Best get practicing. Probably best not rushing getting other guys in til I can actually do it.

@PickledShogun Yeah man it sounds harsh but people that either don't fit, antagonise or don't do the work required have to go. I've said it before but so much time has been wasted in the past trying to keep people happy that haven't really been working with the collective in mind. Too many egos and so often a lack of understanding that everyone involved is giving up time and spending money on a band. That has to be respected.

I read somewhere once that in order to play and sing, he said that you need to be able to practice the instrument part until you don't have to think about it at all, and then start on the singing.

But you've done all this before - I bet it's just a bit of practice needed

Well it's good that the guitarist is turning up at least.

But as Wunty says, it's either 100% and everyone commits, or it's bog off basically. There's no grey area - you either really want to do it, or not. And if he doesn't, then he should do the right thing and respect that the others are committed and not piss everyone off.

It's ok having a rough week or so or having issues to sort out now and again, but in the long term, you have to be committed and make sacrifices.

I haven't been out on a Friday night now for over 2 years because of the band practice on Friday night. And I don't care, because the music is more important.

I'm looking forward to the possibility of open mic nights in the future. Spent a lot more time on my guitar over the last couple of years and would enjoy starting them up again.

@quadfather Yeah I think I'm trying to run before I can walk tbh. Patience is something I lack.

@convercide I listened before you edited and it sounded pretty good to me. Put it back up!

@PickledShogun Ha, don't get me started.

"I just want to express myself guys"
"Yes but you're out of key, out of time and not in keeping with the rest of us"
"But... I need to express myself"
"Perhaps just express yourself at home"
"What about my tone though, it's how I like it"
"It doesn't sound good with everything else in the mix, you need to have something that lends itself to how everything else sounds."
    "I need to express myself"

    /gunshot

In our band, it's slightly different.

Guitarist - "What do you think of this?" /plays something new

Me - "Ok, let's have a go then" /jams along

Whole band together after a couple of minutes of joining in - either a) "Nah, it's dogshit isn't it. Lets have a fag break and do something else", or, b), "Hey, that's pretty cool - what does everyone else think?"

    All - /mutual agreement.

And it can be the guitarist, synth, bass or drums that can start something.

Whereas it USED to be (with the guy always drunk, couldn't play, couldn't tune) -

Guitarist - "ok, lets play song X"

Other guitarist - "I can't play to that. I'm not in tune. I want to play this instead. Can I sing instead? Actually, maybe I should do the guitar. Can someone help me tune? Ah fuck this, I need a beer. So what are we doing again?"

    Guitarist - "FOR FUCKS SAKE".

Yeah, those other 2 had to go.

Mmm, sounds a bit of the standard, wanna be a rockstar type situation.

I'd say Fuck that too, but that's me.

Yeah he wants a solo vehicle, not a band.

This is the thing that always gets me, how can these people not realise that no one is saying they can't do their thing. Just do it in their own time. If they are willingly joining a band then some of that freedom of expression must be sacrificed or it will never work.

Just tell him to fuck off.

Yeah, if I want to do some pure funk, I'll just do it elsewhere, or only if we're up for it.

It's not even like this is a difficult concept to grasp, that's what confuses me.

You write some songs, you practice the songs, then you play the songs. How fucking difficult is that to comprehend?

    Like you say, rockstar situation.

If there's something I can't stand it's excessive guitar noodling. Especially in metal. Mind you I don't like guitar solos at all.

@PickledShogun As much as I love Maiden, even their solos grate on me if I'm not in the mood.

It's the same with some bassists - always wanting to piss about and try and do the most complicated riffs.

    On a bass? Why?

    @PickledShogun

Sounds great. I mean, don't get me wrong, you need some melody and some licks here and there, but it's the groove and the support that's the main thing imo.

I'll see what tonights recordings are like and then see if I can upload a few on here when I get chance.

    @PickledShogun

Yes, I know exactly what you're describing. When we record tracks with individual instruments for a mix, we all get to hear exactly what everyone else plays independently, and I often notice our guitarist will be going mad in some places, and then simply chugging while someone does something else at a different part of the song.

There just has to be that flexibility and arrangement, otherwise it's just 1 guy in a spotlight fret wanking all night. Not my cup of tea, for sure.

Yeah you need to feel the music, not necessarily just hear it

I have a question for the guitarists out there.

My technique isn't too bad, but one thing I've always struggled with is theory.

If you hear a song and you want to play along to it, what's the thought process that goes into doing that?

I understand that recognising the key is probably the first step, and that every key has 7 scale tones, and the tonic (root note), Dominant, and Subdominant notes are the most important notes of that key, and will always sound good for a song in that key...

... So I guess playing those 3 notes (or a scale in that particular key) is probably what you want to be doing...

... But at that point I get lost.
