OMG this is amazing. They're doing concerts right now, I'm seriously considering going to the one in Berlin.

It's pretty great when a band you like gets back together and announces euro tour dates for early next year.

The new series of the Within The Wires fiction podcast has started this week. It's really good.

It's a Night Vale spin-off that's more like a modernist arty European film than a spooky tumblr account.

    Seriously, it's really good.

I've been a bit obsessed with St Vincent recently. A bit late to the party, but masseduction is pretty much perfect.

Also been getting acquainted to some albums i haven't listened to much of the year, mainly Ihsahn, Ghost and A perfect Circle.

This song is incredible. It was playing on one of the first few occasions I took pills and it blew my mind.

Started listening to the Quake 1 soundtrack by Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails fame)

Pretty epic shit, this. Despite me and numerous people I've known playing the game upon release and long after I've never heard the soundtrack before because we all owned... um... not entirely legitimate copies of the game (we were young and didn't have the money!) and the copy protection back then precisely consisted of being unable to hear the music. The makers of said particular copies decided to not include it at all because it only increased the download size while adding exactly nothing.

Edit: oh and thanks to DrStrangelove for reminding me of its existence in the Atmospheric Games thread :)

No need to thank me, thank NIN for making the best soundtrack in gaming history

The makers of said particular copies decided to not include it at all because it only increased the download size while adding exactly nothing.
edit: nothing?? Quake 1 without soundtrack is a pixellated frantic fps. Quake 1 with soundtrack is ultimate darkness.

Don't worry, I thank NIN on an almost daily basis, they're one of my favorite bands of all time.
Seen em live about a dozen times by now (as recently as two months and some ago)

You misunderstand: "unofficial" copies were unable to play the music due to copy protection so makers of those copies decided not to include it at all because the, hmm, "modified" code couldn't do anything with it anyway. I'm certain it added a lot if it was enabled though.

Also keep in mind that soundtracks in games were relatively new back then. Most players didn't notice their absence because of it; I remember still turning off the music in games by default as it was typically a bit shit. I only got into the habit of leaving it on a couple of years later.

    Anyhow, enough reminiscing :)

Well Doom would be only half what it was without the soundtrack. It's just that in the case of Quake 1, the soundtrack was actually more than half.

Reliving the 90s with Radio RMF Grunge on TuneIn. So, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, AiC, Nirvana, Screaming Trees, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney, Dinosaur Jr etc..

    Loving it.

Seeing as Doom and Soundgarden were mentioned in the last two posts.... I always found it fascinating that Soundgarden midi tunes were going tobe used in the original Doom:

And then Soundgarden used the Playstation Doom opening music for their stage entrance during the Down on the Upside tour:

Really rather liking the new Orbital album. Not their best, but it's my favourite since Middle of Nowhere.
