I picked up the new Muse album this morning, seeing as I've bought everything they've ever released. It is as expected, pretty naff.

The opening and closing tracks are great. The second and penultimate tracks are also pretty good. Everything else in the middle, however, is the same old story. Matt Bellamy can compose some great music, but he's a poor lyricist. Also, the band needs some kind of quality assurance. It's nice having all these ideas, but when they don't play into your own creative strengths you're not likely to make a good job of it.

Origins and Black Holes are excellent albums, but with every passing album it would appear more and more likely that they had no idea what made those albums so great.

There's also a track called Get Up and Fight that pushes into American Glam Rock/Punk with a really sloppy hook and fancy effects. It sounds like something you'd expect from a number of commercial bands that have limited ability and target an audience with limited music experience. Its just lazy, which is how I'd sum up the previous 3 albums, too.

Much like those albums you can cherry pick your favourites and ignore the rest.

Totally agree that Origins and Black Holes are their best albums. As for the new album, I love the opening track and the closer. There's a few in the middle that are like the weakest from Drones and I can't stand Thought Contagion. And Dig Down is the worst of the post Black Holes muse. That being said, when muse are good they're really good and there's a few great tracks here . I notice I'm getting less and less interested in their releases now but that might be an age thing.

I'm currently listening to Alan partridge's Nomad on Audio book (the way all of Alan's book's should be enjoyed). I don't think it quite reaches the heights of I, Partridge, ("I AM YOUR PATROL LEADER!") but still enjoying it all the same.

Interspersing it with Serial season 3. It's ok, although it really feels like more of a series of extended This American Life episodes than a true season of Serial.

...Oh sorry, you meant music. Personally, I preferred Origins of Symmetry.

@TheHammerite Have you heard the alternate version of Algorithm? Its the Alternate Reality version. Better than the album version! There's also piano versions of Dark Side and The Void, which are worth a listen, too.

@GoatApocalypse I love both, but I think Black Holes is more crazy. John Leckie and David Bottrill deserve a lot of credit for Origin of Symmetry, though. They have a heavy influence on that album, creatively.

I forgot about Muse really, but a news article got me listening to a couple of tracks on YouTube and, yeah, insipid. The best is nothing Vangellis didn’t already do better 40 years ago and the worst sounds like something Zac Efron should be gurning out in a turn of the century big top.

I don't disagree with you, but most folk who tell me that then go on to talk about how great bands like Green Day or Panic at the Disco are and I have to beat them to death with their own shoes.

Which is a pretty tough ask given they’re probably manky Vans with fluoro skulls all over them.

Didn't really pay too much attention to Deltron 3030's Event 2 when it released in 2013, but am revisiting atm & am loving this time around..

Yes I have heard those. I have the deluxe version on amazon music. I enjoy the album. The Void seems to be my favourite tracks so far.

Booked tickets to see Massive Attack, hoping they haven't butchered the classics from Mezzanine for the new tour! Never seen them live so looking forward to it immensely.

Saw them in Amsterdam a few years ago. They opened with United Snakes, which is amazing live. In fact most of the set list sounded much better live. There's more 'Oomph' to a lot of the tracks.

    Monster Magnet - Powertrip

I really love this album. In fact, Space Lord would be my stripper song.

Who knew that going acoustic would improve a St Anger track?!

Might be one of the best covers of all time.
