Mini Mansions - current Queens of the Stone Age bass players other band. Very catchy, great vocals and is much better than you would think of a side project.

    Would listen to again.

I've been diving in to the Shawn Smith back catalogue since his untimely passing, up to then I had only really listened to his work with Brad. Christ alive he is surely one of the greatest singer songwriters that no one has ever heard of (figuratively speaking). I gather his peers in the 90s Seattle scene put him up there with the best of them, but he shunned the spotlight.

This is from his low-key solo album The Diamond Hand from 2008, I massively recommend checking out his stuff on Bandcamp if you like this ( https://shawnsmith.bandcamp.com ):

    New National album.

Not sure about it, singer seems content to sing the same melodies.

May grow on me but still think they peaked a couple of albums back.
I love it, needed quite a bit of listening but now it's proper under my skin. Strong songwriting and the choice of guest vocalists is perfect, brilliant album and a refreshing, rewarding change from their usual stuff.

The Hood Internet Mixtapes on Soundcloud.
    I personally think they peaked around 4,5 & 6

Hatchie. Somewhere in Australia it is still 1986.

Really poppy, but with a nice 4AD/St Etienne/New Order/Cure vibe.

    Also. Wowie Zowie.

If people don't think that's the best Pavement album then people were only listening Pavement so they could say they listen to Pavement.

I know Steve Malkimus has said he was smoking 'too much weed' when he recorded Wowie Zowie.

But he is wrong. He wasn't smoking enough weed when he recorded the other albums...

I'd still give the nod to Crooked Rain and Slanted & Enchanted over this.

It contains some of their best material at times (We Dance, Grounded) but it's massively uneven and ends on a shit note (Half A Canyon/Western Holmes after CR's triple-crescendo'd Filmore Jive?!).

Slanted is solid all the way through but CR is them at the top of their game for me (Elevate Me Later, Gold Soundz, Range Life, Filmore Jive) even though it has its own dip with Heaven is a Truck/Hit the Plane Down. Hell, even the off-cuts are fucking sublime (Strings of Nashville, Soiled Little Frilly, All My Friends).

Listening to the Watery/Domestic EP at the moment too, another absolute gem.

Right, I'm off to watch Slow Century.

The Shining Levels Gallows Pole OST

I don't think there are many novels (The Gallows Pole by Benjamin Myers) which have their own soundtracks

    https://theshininglevels1.bandcamp.com/

Brilliant dark folk, perfect if you have any love for the vibe of folk-horror or uncanny historical stuff.

(Obviously lots of great albums inspired by novels but actually created as authorised companion pieces I mean)

I'm currently listening to the faint sounds of Tool drifting over from Download and slightly regretting not bothering to go.
