Registered 14 years agoThat was definitely their peak although the latest album felt more in line with the earlier stuff.
The Hunter and Once More Round The Sun felt like hard rock to me. -

Registered 6 years agoCrack The Skye is the kind of album that when I put it on I’ll not listen to anything else for days.
The Hunter is probably my least favourite overall but I think they do the hard tock thing better on the albums that follow it. Like I think its fine, its not bad at all but when the best albums are that good any dips look like big fall offs in quality by comparison. -

One of the few songs I could listen to forever and again while stuck on an island with nothing but this. Soundgarden at their prime IMO.

One of my absolute favourite songs. A great album too. I think the first few songs are among my favourite starts to an album.

Registered 7 years agoThe new Mogwai and Arab Strap albums. Both are really good.
The former feels like a sequel to Hardcore will never die, which is great as it’s the album of there’s i tend to go back to most often. The latter is great. I only really discovered them last year but it’s quite illuminating listening to their early stuff and this side by side. There new one is very much about getting old but still lives in that world Aidan Moffat evokes. I kinda guess both make you feel like a bit of a Pervet

Registered 13 years agoNew Mogwai lp is pretty good. I've only had one full listen thus far though.
I think I found the last one more 'immediate', but they're albums often take a few listens to bed in. -

Registered 6 years agoI read an article about how underappreciated grebo is compared to all the Britpop cokeheads and Madchester casualties.
Lots of Pop Will Eat Itself, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin, Wonder Stuff and Levellers (who I’m counting even if they’re not really) since then

Registered 13 years agoCan't go wrong with any of that.
Grebo= Stourbridge pretty much, so the Wonderstuff fit anyway!
Edit- Oh hang on, you were talking about the levellers not fitting in. D'oh!

Registered 13 years agoPearl Jam never pressed any buttons for me. Plenty mates loved 'em, but they just left me flat.
Eddie Vedder' s catterwauling on Jeremy never helped.
Love Temple of the dog and Mother Love Bone though. -

AiC: Rain when I die, just before that Soundgarden with the sublime Black Rain. Shows how unbelievable SG were, that a cut like Black Rain didn't make the album!
...and as I type we have Flock of Seagulls, with the great: Space Age Love Song.
This is why I always select Random on my music player!👍 -

Registered 3 years agoHad an urge to go back through The Mars Volta discography again. I remember as a youth loving De-loused, but then as the albums went on just turned into endless 10 minute noodling which went absolutely nowhere. Doesn't appear my opinions have changed much.. -

I tried to "get into" TMV and bought two albums, based of either videos or maybe a recommendation from Q mag. I think I played both of them once, maybe twice. I should like their stuff, but alas it turns out I do not! -

Registered 12 years agoI have been listening a to a bit of Temper Trap and lots of Crowded House lately. Also A-Ha last night which was good. -
Mars Volta are one of those bands part of me doubts that anyone actually really liked. They were always in Kerrang and had loads of marketing for that first album but I don’t think I know anyone who bought it who kept it in rotation for more than maybe a week of trying to like it
