@Khanivor over 220 million consoles sold this gen with most bought mainly for gaming. Nintendo has sold the most this gen and with ds + 3ds sales of around 170 million its clear people want games consoles. Diversifying the business won't save them, decent games from well supported developers will. |

The problem remains that for the manufacturers just 'games' is no longer good enough. Offering a product now is about being a 'social content delivery platform' and making it a lifestyle necessity rather than a luxury.
That's not to say the idea itself is bad, but it's the fact that the people who helped create and perpetuate this behemoths by buying their products when they were niche are feeling marginalised; forgotten and made to feel indistinguishable by the generic and insipid sequels we're forcefed because it's what the majority want
This is endemic of all media, not just gaming though and the price of a hobby or niche interest gaining acceptance and mass popularity. I do hope the golden age of gaming hasn't already been and gone whilst the majority of us were too young to appreciate it fully, but I do feel that the number of genuine breakouts an unique IPs will be fewer and fewer simply because the Market dictates what is required, not the informed -

Registered 20 years agoGaming hasn't been niche for a couple of decades, pushing three. If you were around when gaming was niche then you are well old enough to know better .gif)
I'll bet you a fair few folks whining about the 'fall of gaming' had the PS2 as their first games machine, fer chrisakes.
It just seems to me that some folks' memory is very short. There have been plenty of E3s where fuck all was announced and the lineup of new and interesting games was next to non-existent.
It also seems to me that the era when lots of new IP was making a big splash on the consoles at E3 was when 3D tech was still learning how to crawl. How long has it been since something genuinely different was done with 3D worlds, (that wasn't done in 2D in Nebulus)?
The medium needs something fresh. It's not going to come from a new IP, not when that IP is invariably going to be a rehash/mashup of something we played a few years ago but prettier. And with more swearing. -

People like familiarity. Shit, sequels have been the rage ever since they came out with the New Testament. -

I would love to have some hugely atmospheric games with no handholding and a genuine sense of loneliness and exploration, like Ico or Metroid Prime.
What are the chances of anything like that these days?

Registered 15 years agoI'd bet several of the multi-platform demos were done on PC with a 360 pad.
What gaming needs, again, is a bit of proper competition. Why were there so many new IPs in the MD/SNES era? Because they were neck and neck, and mainly in-house. EA etc also threw many new IPs at the wall and sequels were given to the ones that stuck - for every Desert Strike, though, there was a B.O.B. These days, all they do is release a sequel, because it's safe.
Gaming has moved heavily away from the platform holders, and into the hands of the big third parties. THAT's the stagnant part of things, a lack of volume in the first party. I guess that was what losing Sega really did. -

Which makes the pretend playing with PS3/360 controllers even more ridiculous.
Pretty much every multiplat demo shot for every E3 has been PC footage. Many of the console exclusives too, like the original Wii U demo.
What original Wii U demo? From last year? -

They could easily make a FPS in this vain as well. It be interesting to see a narrative standpoint of a soldier basically going through the shitter basically. The affects of losing comrades, pyhsoclogical effects of say shell shock, innocents dying etc, of course it have its bombastic moments, but each shooter doesn't have to be outright in your face yee haw. I think they have a place in gaming, once in a while i enjoy a COD SP on a rainy sunday afternoon but i would like someone to try and add some substance to a thing where people actually lose their lives on a regular basis.

Game development, graphics, production etc has improved so rapidly in the space of 20 years, but narrative storytelling seems to have regressed.

Stalker series, Dark Souls, DayZ, Skyrim - there's four. Pretty laughable bemoaning the lack of titles in a genre when there's some modern classics you haven't played.

Registered 18 years agoFor the companies attending, E3 is more than just a showcase for new IP/Content/Platforms. It's a trade show. The main purpose is to do business, meet contacts, negotiate deals. The glitz is all well and good but despite the showy stands, that's almost secondary to them. -
