Finally finished my room today, took ages as I encountered some challenges with projector placement that put things on hold for a bit, and it was done each evening or so. Here's a few pics, there's a more in depth thread on AVF if you want to know more. In short I changed projector to JVC X30 to enable digital lens shift, bought an awesome Stewart Studiotek 130G 2.4:1 screen, painted the room to dark brown (bitter chocolate 1 and 2 from Dulux), covered half of side walls, screen walls and above the screen in wooden panelling wrapped in devore (a black velvet to reduce light reflection) and two black rugs on the floor! I can't emphasise how the difference enough, it's mind blowing! The panelling going up: ![]() The seating arrangement: ![]() Used to look like: ![]() The finished room |

You're right though, the blacks are so much deeper. I never noticed the absence of such depth before but now that I see it's just ... wow! My partners working all day Sat and Sun so will be spending most of Sat upstairs watching movies, neglecting the outside world.

For a mid range 1080p PJ that's cheap. Paid £1800 same for my AE2000 way back. In the days before expensive bastard offspring!

Yeah, I hope so! I've paid for a calibrator to do a full THX audio and video calibration over two days so really looking forward to seeing what changes that introduces. Never had a calibration before as I couldn't justify the cost at the time (given most hardware I had cost less than the cost of a calibrator!)

Digital lens shift? That doesn't sound good, or do you mean it's digitally controlled? -

I will have an AV room again. Even if it means sending my kid to boarding school / renting him out. -

Registered 20 years agoAnyone useing a soundbar for their AV setup? Are they any good, or is it better to just buy a normal home theatre speaker system? -

Registered 19 years agoI think you may get a sneering response asking that in here Razz.
I have heard people being very happy with them, but I don't think they come close to a discrete multi-speaker setup from what I'm told. -

I recently discovered them, never heard of them before. I had a demo of one in Currys, the sound was awesome, but pricey. Not really sure it was worth it honestly... probably more worth the price for situations where space is an issue. -
I pondered over the idea of a soundbar for a bit. Didn't buy one in the end though. -

I wouldn't use one in a home cinema but have it for the TV downstairs and I love it, it's nice and discreet and tidy. It doesn't come close to even a basic 5.1 package but it's great in a room where you can't or don't want speakers dotted around. I got the Yamaha YSP 2200 one, there's probably even better ones around
LOL!
