    Right,

My (wonderful, amazing, beautiful, intelligent etc) girlfriend has told me she'll buy me a digital camera for Christmas!

I remember a thread on here a few weeks ago that was on a similar subject but I can't find it. Peej mentioned some Minolta thingy in it.

Anyway, I need some advice on what to look at when I'm buying one. For Example, someone said to me that the amount of Megapixels a digital camera has isn't everything. The lens is most important or something. Stuff like that anyway!

So... what features to look for, what models and websites to get them off. Please. :]

Oh, I basically want it to take decent photos and record videos. Doesn't have to be anything fancy that some pro would use. Kind of quality that Peej's honeymoon photos were at seems pretty good to me! Budget... well... she's flexible (less of that)... or I'm sure I could make her see sense!

    Cheers.

    Tomo

I'm going to have a bath and when I get back, this thread will be swamped with replies.

I might actually be getting a digicam as well - I asked for the Fuji Finepix F440.

Yeah, I've heard good things about that Canon one too. What are the videos like on it? How long can you record for?

    Bath time.

    Back soon.

monkeyboy: You can shorten links by not putting the full link text in the space between the [a href="..."] and the [/a]. The full link only needs to go in between the quotes - you can put any old crap in between the tags.

dpreview is a very good place to look, if you know what you're looking for. I'm currently looking at getting something cheap (losable) which used CF cards and had A and S priority modes. Using their camera search, it pretty much dropped me straight on to the Canon A75/85/95. A quick check of the user reviews (and cyk's photos done on an A75!) and I reckon that's the one I'll go for. I just need to decide whether 3 MP is enough for my needs, or whether I should stretch to the 4.

(Hmm, how do you shorten links?)

Write this without the spaces before and after the brackets:

    < a href= "your link" > something describing the link < /a >

I hope your photography is better focused than your post. :)

    Right cheers.

I was looking on pixmania.com and they have this < a href= http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/56777/art/canon/powershot-a95-pack-plus.html > Pack Plus < /a > deal. Is that just with the NiMH battery chucked in? Worth it I take it? Is that the only difference between that and the normal A95 deal?

    Ill keep searching.

Oh, one other thing. What are Jessops like compared to buying online, price wise? Shit I'm guessing. Same goes for most street stores?

Tomo> Heh, 'spoon just put those spaces in so it wouldn't linkify. Take out the spaces round the arrows.

Don't ask me about pixmania's bundle deals. They confuse the hell out of me. I know what I want, but finding it in a list of about 200 different combinations is a bit difficult.

Edit: Bah, it's me that's well late this time.

I purchased the Sony Cybershot (the one running in the recent ads) and it's been a stellar little camera. 4 megapixels and 3x optical zoom.

What I wanted was a small pocket camera that gave decent shots and this does just the job. You should be able to pick it up for < 200

I had the S4 before I managed to lose it. :-(

Nice little camera, it's now been replaced with the new S5i (in blue!) which I ordered from Pixmania for £227*.

The S4/S4i should be a bit cheaper now but they're running out of stock in most places.

    * Just checked and it's gone up to £231 for the blue version and £232 for the silver. That was the one thing I found with Pixmania was that there prices always fluctuate.

FYi, the blue version I got was a french model so the manual was in french but you get a CD of PDFs with all the other languages so it hasn't been a problem.

Last time this thread came up someone (I think it was WOPR) recommended a Kodak EasyShare DX6490.

I bought one on the back of that recommendation and it's fab.

    Cheers.

I'll have a look at all that stuff. Leaning towards the Canon A95 at the moment.
