PlayStation 3 exclusive Yakuza 5 features five main characters and is set in five cities: Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka.

The five main characters are Kazuma Kiryu, Taiga Saejima, Shun Akiyama, Haruka and Tatsuo Shinada, according to Japanese magazine Famitsu (via Andriasang). All five are playable.

Shinada, a former baseball player, is the newcomer. He was slapped with a life ban for gambling, but apparently he's innocent. And in debt.

Kiryu is working as a taxi driver in Fukuoka. Soejima is doing time behind bars. Akiyama is in Osaka on business. Haruka left Okinama to become an idol, and is living on her own in Osaka. It seems her talent agency has some nefarious plan for her. The story connects directly with Yakuza 4.

Designer Toshihiro Nagoshi said the game uses a new engine, which means zombie spin-off Yakuza of the End marks the end of the engine that served the series so well. Because of this, Yakuza 5 is considered a "New Yakuza", with better controls, and a bigger and better script.

Yakuza 5 is 70 per cent complete. It's out in Japan on PlayStation 3 in December.

I will give this a go, but I couldn't really get into Yakuza 4, and haven't even played 3.

I have 3, but found never finished it as even once you left the orphanage it wasn't all that interesting. Plus it was kinda clunky, so I couldn't be bothered.

Fantastic. Playing Dead Souls right now, and while it scratches an itch, it's got nothing on a proper whiskey swelling, street brawling Yakuza game.

Yakuza 4 is brilliant, superb characters, entertaining story, hugely atmospheric and combat is a blast. It can be picked up for buttons, definitely a must to at least try it IMO.

Looking forward to Fukuoka. Went there last year during Oktoberfest and it was great fun. Never seen a mosh pit form in front of Alpine yodelling before.

How ? Yakuza has always had that wacky/mental streak, but they've outdone themselves this time. Kiryu as a taxi driver by day/illegal street racer by night ? Genius, assuming we're still able to hit folk in the face with a bike. Those hunting screens are rather pretty too.

Is it true? Has this really just been confirmed tonight at TGS (via the EG Live Blog), as not coming to the West?

I'll hold out for an official announcement by SEGA, but to hear this whilst waiting so excitedly for Jet Set Radio HD to go live tomorrow is really screwing with my emotions!

Low sales not justifying the cost of localisation? Pretty big issue in EU (not so much for NA). None of the ones so far have exactly set the charts alight here.

Japanese demo's out today. Had a quick bash before heading to work, didn't get all the story done. The demo starts in Fukuoka with Kiryu. The extra year between numbered titles definitely seems to have paid off and it benefits from the advanced Binary Domain made; the whole thing now appears to run at full 720p with some pretty hefty AA in the cutscenes and it slows down much less than 4 did. Other changes:

Going into battles (especially random battles) is much faster, and coming out is quick too; no boring text to skip through with each fight.

Kiryu's gone mental and has some new Heat moves. I don't seem to be able to slam people into high walls any more, but he's got a really nasty move for enemies who are facing down on the ground.

R2 now puts you into a 'turbo' mode with a new move set. Hammering X gives you an unending stream of punches now, and the throw it gives you is crazy.

Missions now seem to appear as markers on the map.

Loading into and out of buildings is much faster, but still very noticeable. Club Sega lets you play VF2, which looks choppy as it seems to be running at the original 58fps. Runs at 720p though.

Nakasu, I mean Nagasu looks really nice at sunset. I spent much more time in Tenjin while in Fukuoka, but I do get flashes of memories when I walk past certain places. Was that a coffee shop I went to? Didn't I buy cigars there for my birthday? Stuff like that.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure if I'm going to be playing the demo any more. The game's here in a week and a half. Can't wait, though.

Cool, I'll grab the demo later. Glad to hear the graphics have gone up a notch, I'll admit I did have my doubts after seeing the survival tactics/cab-driving footage which looked a bit bland. I always gave the series a free pass when it came to graphics as I love the story and characters, that's what really sets it apart from the crowd.

Can't wait for my copy of the full game to arrive...

I don't get all the chat about the Yakuza games having bad graphics. 3 and 4 look brilliant, and 1 and 2 were phenomenal looking on the PS2.

My copy arrived today. It's clear that as the series goes on, the Ryu ga Gotoku games become more and more grounded in reality. However, at the same time, that reality moves further and further away from that of Planet Earth.

Mine came on Friday, with an unexpected soundtrack CD:

I've put an hour or two so far in and it's great, but between the Wii U, and Persona 4 on Vita taking up a lot of my gaming time, I'll likely shelve it for a week or two in order to give it my full attention. Personal highlight so far - playing the chef mini-game, so addictive!
