I caved and bought this. Really love the series and can't have SEGA thinking people don't care about it because of me. No Idea when I'll have the time to play it mind... Edited by FatSternKikwi at 06:11:44 13-12-2015 |

Registered 18 years agoFantastic stuff so far, it's amazing how much time you can lose just doing the race missions.
Oh, and if anyone is trying to do the shogi stuff, I'd recommend this online shogi application to practice with (or, if you can't be bother, just copy the moves into the app and then have the 2 computers play each other).

Registered 12 years agoI started this last night, literally just after finishing 4. There's so many nice little tweaks to all the game systems! It's a real step up when you compare 3 to 4. The towns are more densely populated, the side missions are much easier to find now they're on the map and the graphics are much better(but still arse in certain places). Even the AI is better.
I really hope this does well enough to get 6 brought out in this country in a timely fashion. £28 well spent! -

Registered 15 years agoI fear 6 will be a way off yet with 0 next year. Not sure how different Kiwami's script is from the original (for preexisting content) to see if it is an easier or more difficult localisation effort...
Not got this yet. I want to support it but it is pricy for a download... I would ask for some PSN credit for Xmas but price goes up on 25th... (resists physical rant...) -

Oh, how I've missed stuff like this. -

Registered 15 years ago@elstoof you can always buy it on the webstore ready for when you setup your PS3.
I am still wavering over this as I would like to support it even though I think it is highly priced for a digital only title. I am a bit skint though and the price going up at Xmas is an issue as I wouldn't pay the full fee. So far it seems the rumours of an Asian physical release haven't panned out but I don't feel I should he waiting for a sale... One more week to make my mind up (if it expired after xmas I'd have asked for some PSN credit to ease my decision but that's not to be...) -

Registered 16 years agoDug out the PS3, found the controller, thank fuck the power cable and hdmi are generics, set it up, software update required. Installed, PS Store software update required. Fuck sake. Finally in, card details need updating. Ok, typing on a gamepad is laborious.
Downloading now, can't wait. -

Registered 15 years agoI'm going to get a PS3 just for Yakuza games, would it be wise to start with 3 then 4, and finally 5? I'm tempted to jump straight in with 5 and then play the other two. -

Registered 16 years agoLoving this, at this stage of my life I need to make an effort to make time to play games and I'm finding it easy for this one. Huge fan of the series anyway, there's just so much bizarre shit to distract you and those side quests are never a chore like i find most other sandbox games to be. -

Probably best to start with 3, especially if it's cheaper. I think that's one of the best, and there should be a recap video to fill you in.

Registered 15 years agoPlaying sequentially is best. I played through 1 properly on PS2 a few years ago then went through 2 at the end of the year. Played through 3 and 4 this year. Although 3 and 4 both have story recaps for the previous games (and even a trophy for watching them in one of them IIRC). -

Registered 15 years agoI ignored the advice and jumped into 5 - it does seem like i'm a bit out off the loop but I couldn't resist the shiny new game.
It's very slow paced but so far I'm loving it, and having been to Japan twice, it really takes me back. It does somewhat remind me off Shenmue in that I choose to roam about playing arcade machines etc.
I've read it's about 60hrs long, so it's going to take me a while to finish as gaming time these days is pretty limited by work/family

Registered 15 years agoI never did learn Shogi so tended not to play those bits but I appreciate them being there. Some of the games have harder minigame trophy requirements than others. Not checked my Yakuza 5 trophy list since it changed into English... Note, I don't k ow how to play Mahjong either but it looks a LOT easier to learn. At least the trophies for the annoying baseball are usually quite easy (I still remember the forced playing of that in Yakuza 1...). I am naturally crap at darts both in this and real life
Karaoke is nice and easy though

Registered 16 years agoYakuza 5 really seems to have sunk without a trace.
I just found out that those defending the Digital release omitted to mention that the graphics had been downgraded to reduce the size of the download, so it actually looks worse than the original.
If any game wasn't suitable for a digital only release, it was Yakuza 5. -

Registered 17 years agoHaving owned this since is was a freebie on PS+ I though today was a good as time as any to start.
I have always been curious about these games, assuming them to be Japanese "GTA" with the quirky Japanese very upfront.
I have not actually played yet but watched the into movie right up until you take control in the Taxi office.
What I watched was excellent, love having the Japanese (got to stop typing that!) Voice over with English subs.
The series seems to have a very loyal following. To EGers who like the game, what have I got in store, for what it is worth I'm playing on easy, I just want to enjoy with as little death and failing as possible. -

Registered 15 years agoA very slow start, some extremely simplified mini-games of various quality (taxi stuff is pretty bad, hunting much better) and an entire chapter devoted to becoming an idol, practicing dance routines and singing. Prepare yourself.
The storyline is as erratic as ever, and the whole character and flavour of it shines, but whether through Yakuza fatigue or the tedious elements, it felt a bit "too many cooks".
Throwing everything they had into this slightly spoilt/diluted it's overall impact for me, especially as the freedom to chop and choose characters doesn't appear until very late in the game. -

Registered 9 years agoFrom what I've hear, Yakuza 4 is still supposedly the best one in the series so far, and a great starting point to jump into the series.
Unlike the previous games, 5 doesn't have a catch-up feature that summarises on what happened in the previous games. A very odd omission.
Still I hear the game is still awesome even if you haven't at the very least played 4. You'll just won't appreciate the returning characters from 4 as much. It's the reason why I haven't played 5 yet since it went on Plus months ago, and have been waiting a sale for 4 since.
If you had Plus back when Y4 was part of the line-up, I would recommend to play that instead. Otherwise, the game is apparently still great without prior knowledge of the series
I have completed 3, so I guess it is hard for me to jump ship to 5, since I already invested in the game world that is Yakuza. -

Registered 12 years agoI'm in the same place as you, FrostPan. Finished 3 (loved it) but haven't played 4 yet, so don't want to start 5. I have 4 on disc, it's just a case of getting around to it... -
@Ror
Minds alike. I'm sure for me 4 will be on sale when the PS Store Black Friday sale happens soon. But whenever I get around to playing it, yeah...
3 is great. Played almost to completion last year, and only just finished it up recently. Forgot how intricate the combat system was, so had to go over some of the combat move combos again. Not going to do that again. Next time I start a Yakuza game, I'll intend to finish it around the time I started playing it.
