So I guess that's my NYE sorted. Having a Chinese. Kids in bed, some Phoenix nights (not watched in ages) and then some yakuza. I don't drink so NYE is just another night for me. Found out yesterday that the missus is pregnant again so a quiet night.

Registered 9 years agoJust saw on GAF that Y5 is now available to preorder at the US PSN store.
Hopefully it will arrive on the EU store too!
I'm actually almost finished with 3. Will skip 4 as I don't want to feel fatigued with the series when I get to 5 so soon. But from what I have played from 3, I loved it. So hyped!!!

Registered 9 years agoNope, but it's definitely sometime later this year.
They have been releasing parts of a developer interview recently and this is the latest part:
Latest Y5 news:
Lesser known about the western release of Yakuza 5 is that it includes all the Japanese DLC, including “Another Drama” which is a series of extensive sub-plots that focus on each protagonist.
SUPPORT the release if you want to see future Yakuza games!
Whether you’re training for dance battles, ferrying people around as a taxi driver or even helping out as a temporary ramen cook, there’s a whole world to explore! Head into CLUB SEGA and play some Virtua Fighter 2 with your friends over PSN. Or if you prefer to play something more rhythmic, you can check out Taiko no Tatsujin and drum to the beat of some music.
Especially if you want a Yakuza game on PS4!

Registered 15 years agoI have heard that Asia may get a physical English release. If it does and we don't I am going to have to support future Asian English disc releases not ours or the US by buying that one. Either is still a sale for the English copy so...
I would rather we just got a release here Vita games get physical releases so surely it shouldn't cost Sega more than that with how many copies Vita releases probably sell of expensive cartridges. Even if they made it webstore only...
I have the JP language Korean version on disc already so just need an English disc... If neither get a physical release then I may have to make do with the digital release ... -

Registered 16 years agoI thought Sony were involved in localising and publishing Yakuza 5, the digital only release would be their call more than Sega's then.
I can't pay more then two or three Pounds if it's digital only. Digital simply isn't worth anymore than that to me, especially with the added inconvenience of having to keep such a large game backed up on a closed system which encrypts your data and won't even let you swap out hard drives.
At some point PSN won't support PS3s, how are you going to access your game then if you delete it to make space? Read the small print, they're not obligated to give you anything beyond the first download, if they don't want to host the file or support a legacy system in five years there's no come back.
I really hope the rumours about an Asian release are true. -

Registered 16 years agoI think it's more to do with a boxed EU release requiring various languages, and a digital copy of the U.S. English version gets around that somehow. -

Registered 15 years agoIs there an actual requirement for the multiple languages or is it just preferred? Besides that wouldn't excuse the lack of a physical US copy either.
Keeps an eye out for Malaysian and Singaporean physicals... -

Registered 16 years agoI'm not sure, there are plenty of PAL releases that had localised packaging and manuals but often were English only. Sometimes there are multiple PAL versions within the region itself so the 'economics of multiple versions' argument is weak.
The problem has always been Sega and how it wants to be perceived. They want to be up there with the heavyweights like Activision and EA and they can't do that with niche sellers that serve a small segment of the market. Trying to be an EA is what has killed off the diversity of Sega's output and left them obsessed with the all the eggs in one or two baskets strategy of chasing the multiple million sellers.
A publisher like Atlus would be perfectly happy with the performance of Yakuza, they've maintained a profitable business off modestly selling games that target niche audiences. Being perceived as such industry small fry wouldn't do for Sega, they have a certain degree of hubris after all, hence all the 'small fry' games getting slowly phased out.
Big boys, making big games and hopefully really big profits is where they wanted to be but they were never really capable of competing at that level, they're simply too badly managed, but hubris won't allow them to change course despite more than a decade of failure as a third party. -

SEGA own Atlus so.........I could see SEGA moving all their niche titles under the Atlus brand who are well regarded for said titles. -

I don't understand why some people have this mentality for this specific title. The past 5 games haven't sold well in the west, so it makes financial sense to go digital-only. I imagine the whole physical distribution process actually does cost a fair bit. I don't think it's especially cynical for Sega to do this.

But I can understand the whole ownership argument. But for this case, I'm glad Yakuza 5 is actually coming out after all, so it's either this or nothing. According to the interview video there is the possibility that Yakuza: Zero will come out - but nothing is planned, so I'm assuming the fate of that will be down to the sole digital sales of 5. -

Registered 16 years agoUltimately, the consumer gets to decide how much something is worth to them. I don't think a digital game is worth much, £3 is about the upper limit of what I'd pay considering all the shortcoming and limitations.

Registered 9 years agoApparently it will be £29.99/€39.99. Will have 15% discount when released.

Price is not brillant, but not bad - but the 15% discount is indeed welcome.
Word on the street is that they will be no pre-order listing for it like the US counterpart. Will appear on the store whenever it comes out.
I'm glad though. I wouldn't be too keen on paying money on a pre-order that still has no definite release date yet for this year. -

Registered 15 years agoHmmm, the article says "The company has announced the digital promotion will only run for a limited time surrounding the game's launch, meaning it'll cost £29.99 / €39.99." I'm not sure if that means this is with 15% off already or not. -

Registered 18 years agoIt's a hell of a lot of game for the price. Took me a good 80+ hours to finish, at which my completion gauge was at 45%. Hope they keep the licenced bits of the soundtrack as-is, as I got a kick from the way it basically used a greatest hits of Kyosuke Himuro to accompany the key parts of the story. -

Registered 16 years agoI'm likely getting confused, but wasn't there a PS4 version of this in Japan? If so, why is just the PS3 version getting localised?
If there was an EU PS4 Yakuza 5 release I'd have leapt on that in a heartbeat. PS3... not so much :/ -

Registered 15 years ago@SomaticSense No, Yakuza 5 was the last PS3 only release. Ishin and 0 were dual format.
Although Sega have stated digital only there has been talk that there may be a physical Asian English copy. If so, this is what I will have to get. Sega should've done a limited preorder only physical for Europe/US as an option for those of us who really want a physical copy but despite tiny publishers managing to find such things viable Sega seemingly won't. They could've even spiced up it as an LE like the original Japanese release to encourage the scalper resellers to buy it too

Sadly Sega have been saying digital only from the start. Best bet is to keep an eye out to see if the physical Asian release happens as it shpuld be region free (remembers the P4Arena debacle...). That is my plan (I already have the JP language Korean physical but a translated copy would be faster going for me)
Fuck. I won't be buying it then. -

Registered 14 years agoYou all realise that buying an asian release over the EU version reduces the already slim chances that further Yakuza releases will ever make their way west? I'd still buy it if they only released it on PS2 with a mandatory suppository peripheral. -

Registered 16 years agoWhy should anybody feel obligated to buy a product they don't want?
If it's really that serious, and the Asian version has a physical English release we'll let you know every time we buy a copy and you can buy copies of the localised digital release
on our behalf.

Nobody should feel obligated, but fans of Yakuza have been screaming for Yakuza 5 to be translated and released in the west. It's obviously a bit of a coin toss for Sega but for some reason they've actually done it. Now people are saying fuck it, I'll import from Asia or whatever, then wonder why they won't bother giving us Yakuza 0.
