Yeah, I've been a MacBook Pro user for seven or eight years now, but a Surface Book with a decent GPU and quiet running cooling system would be very tempting.

Got it via Daring Fireball where Gruber points out how MS seem to specifically targeting the creatives Apple is ignoring. Interesting times.
As he clearly states in the post, Gabe is a big fan of Surface and when he pointed out some stuff he didn't like about the Pro 3 (I think) Microsoft whisked him away in a black helicopter and consulted with him to see how they could fix it. He's been one of their go-to "regular people" for consultation for about a year or two now. Gotta assume someone on the MS team is a fan of the strip.

3D CAD rendering is where that weak GPU will be a problem.

Proper CAD people wouldn't even use consumer grade cards, would they? 50 million polys is fuck all to them. That's a sneeze to an architect. Used to live with one, and his work machines were fucking insanely specced with custom hardware up the yin yang. I imagine Surface isn't for that market. :)

Well they have quadros now and still complain about performance.
I think the bottleneck is actually the vram and not the gpu.

Could be, they do have entire plants in some of those cad files.

No, not really. CAD is bobbins and entirely CPU dependant.

Dual Xeons, sure. The GPU is a waste of time.
Like many applications, they're offloading computation to GPGPU programs now. That's where the specialist cards with higher floating point accuracy or whatever come into it.

Surface Pro ain't for them, as we're saying. :)

I'm only going by what my architect mate used to tell me - a cursory google also suggests GPU being used to accelerate the process. But it hardly matters one way or the other.

It's a lovely looking piece of kit and I would love one but DB is correct, CPU is what matters for CAD 3D software. I have dual Xeons, 16GB of RAM and a Quadro 4000 GFX card to run Creo 3.0 and it is always the CPU that takes the hit on larger models.

Only if he's rendering, which he's not. You offload all renders to a farm that churns it out for you, you never do it on the workstation. Someone else mentioned something about rendering which spurred that.
I think you took me way more seriously than I intended. ;-)

Decent deals on Surface Pro 4 at Currys. You get a free xbox s1. Still over a grand when you include the type cover, though.
