Registered 16 years agoI don't understand where this Fifty Shades thing has come from, nor why all three books are at the top of the best sellers list despite me never having heard of the author nor his/her work.
But... I'm guessing it's a load of bollocks, right? -

Have you ever tried Peter James? The Grace series or Perfect People are decent. -

Registered 19 years agoAFAIK 50 shades is fanfic based ladyporn. Quite good, by all accounts, if you like that sort of thing. Not read it myself.
Anything by John Wyndam should float your boat by the looks of that list, Spindle. -

Registered 16 years agoI never read anything from the best sellers list. Popularist pap.
Ideally for me a book needs to be little known and those who have read it hated it. -

Registered 14 years agoIf you liked Ready Player One and want to try another book about video games (there's not many about) I'd recommend Tim Etchells's "Broken World." It's written in the form of an FAQ for an imaginary game but the narrator keeps going off topic to discuss the steady decline of his private life. Anyone who has ever spent too much time playing games will relate to the main character but the real star is the game itself which starts simple enough but gets increasingly surreal and fantastical. Its not a shouty, pacy book like ready player one but if you're in the mood for something a bit more mellow it's well worth a try. -

Just popped down town to put some money in the bank. Had some loose change in my pocket so popped into charity shop. Picked up Great expectations and Cloud Atlas (D. Mitchell) for 4 quid. Not a half way to shop for books. -

It does seem odd. If you haven't read Fifty Shades, I urge you to download the Kindle sample from Amazon and read what I've just read.

Registered 16 years agoIf you've not already read it, 'Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell' (Susanna Clarke) is a mighty fine read. 800 pages of alternate reality 19th century England where magicians still exist which should keep you going for a while -

As it happens I'm half way through his Cryptonomicon. Very odd, but quite enjoyable. He's like Douglas Adams with a better work ethic. -

I read a fair bit, it is good, if you like the subject matter/style. You'll pretty much know what you're getting into from the first chapter, so if you don't like it, give up.

Registered 11 years agoI would highly recommend the Red Dwarf books to anyone. Absolutely hilarious. However... don't buy anything else those authors wrote because they're shit. The first couple of Hitchiker's Guide books are good too (skip everything else though). Further comedy stuff which rewards an avid book reader (by taking the piss out of other books) is Anno Dracula (the first one anyway, not so much the others). And if you like fantasy, Steven Erikson nine billion super sized Malazan books should keep you going for years. -

Then start with 'The Border Trilogy'. 'Blood Meridian' and 'No Country for Old Men' are also unmissable, the latter slightly less so if you have seen the film and know the plot.
