What is Pacific Rim about? Here's the official synopsis to shed some light: "When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse."

This quote sums up Pacific Rim. "The footage was, as GDT put it, "robo-porn" and it was freaking amazing. It makes Michael Bay's Transformers movies look like they were shot for a buck and a quarter. Imagine a mixture of Transformers, Gatchaman and Godzilla and you have some idea of what Pacific Rim has in store."

Del Toro explained that he did not want his robots brought to life via motion-capture because he didn't want them to move like humans so they went old school CG animation. He also told his animators not to just have the monsters standing there moving their claws during a fight like henchmen in a bad martial arts movie just standing there posing until the hero whips their ass. All the Kaiju were created from the team's own imagination and were not patterned after preexisting creatures from legends or depicted in other films or media.

I'm a fan of Guillermo and mecha so I'm interested in this but I have no idea if he's going to be able to pull this off.

Will you please STOP using IGN as your only form of source?!?

    It's getting a bit dull.

Idris Elba is in a lot of films nowadays, hey?

Is this Guillermo del Toro first film he takes the helm (as a director) since the likes of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy, which came out a good four or five years ago...?

    Sounds ... different.

I hope Stringer Bell manages to say, 'naw, man' at some point in the film!

The story sounds idiotic, but who doesn't want to see giant things fighting?

It doesn't sound massively original. But I'm a big fan GDT, and this is the first time he's been given a stupendous budget. That combined with the fact he's a fantastic creature/character designer, means this is in my current Top 3 'must watch' list for next year.

I just had to double-check this wasn't a Benecio Del Toro film, but no, it does seem to be GDT. Shame this seems to mean the Lovecraft film won't go ahead now.

Viral marketing has kicked in. Apparently there's going to be a trailer attached to the Hobbit aswell.

This stuff will probably be more enjoyable than the film itself.

GLaDOS voice is a bit off putting in that trailer, aswell as the Inception horn.

I found the teaser excited me a bit more than this full trailer. Il wait to watch it properly in the morning when I'm not on my phone.

If those monsters aren't created by vented neurotoxin, I, for one, am going to be very disappointed.

I preferred it when they'd just use Lux Aeterna rather than an air horn. :(

Michael Bay's next film is about an invasion of alien robots that turn in to large air horns. The bad alien robots turn in to vuvuzelas.

    BRB Treatment to write.

Fucking dreadful. Has more than a slight whiff of 90s Godzilla. The camera's pulled in so close you can't see the action and it's all played way too serious.

I love some of Del Toro's work but I'm suspicious of this one

Well unlike the negative nancy above me, I'm looking forward to this because I understand it's a trailer and there's a fair chance a lot of that is purposely close up so it leaves some mystery as to the exact design of the robots and monsters along with possibly trying to avoid spoiling any big action beats.

It's certainly sold me on the concept of the film.

I think that looks like the best film ever made. I thinking popped a boner during the rocket punch bit.

I think we know who the REAL villain is going to turn out to be in this film. Seriously, don't trust her!!
