Spoilers - really that big a deal? Page 3

Spoilers are still spoilers though, they don't have an expiration date as some people seem to think, as is evident and thoughtless from some posts here. There are always loads of young people who just haven't seen classics yet.
Which is another point, and possibly a good way to test what's truly a spoiler.

Example: "Explorer/mogul finds a giant ape on a mysterious island" isn't a spoiler in any way, shape or form. "King Kong dies at the end" is, no matter how long ago the film was made

I'm not sure I can take this topic on film spoilers seriously. At least not from a man who doesn't go to the cinema and who refuses to upgrade from betamax.
Not sure who you're thinking of but I don't go to the cinema because the cinema-going experience is downright unpleasant these days. I watch all my films via Blu-Ray on a projector set-up I've had for a while.

I'm not saying there's no such thing as a spoiler, I'm just having a whinge that people are getting far too sensitive. What some people call spoilers really, definitely aren't.

If I didn't know he was going to find a giant ape... then it is a spoiler...

    What a fucking stupid thread.

How much of a spoiler something is, is directly proportional to how much you care about something being spoiled. Quite simply, if you don't care, then it literally can't be "spoiled" for you.

In other words, it's completely subjective, so anyone trying to put some sort of hard definition about what is or isn't a spoiler is being a bit of a durr.

    Much like Batman, then.
Why? Have the spoilers so far been man in silly suit hits things?

Kinda, you could argue that a 'proper' spoiler refers to something which is intended to be kept secret from the audience by the maker.
  • Deleted user 18 July 2012 17:02:59
You could argue whatever you want.

    That should be EG's mantra.

Only if it's followed by an 11 page discussion on the semantics of 'mantra'.

Out for a walk with a friend recently, having a chat about video games, and I was saying that I'm playing Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and he almost immediately blurts out "have you met Darth Vader yet?".

Fucking gutted. Was raging at him. That would've and should've been a big reveal that he was in the game.

    Why are people like this?

But yeah, even though this was bumped by a spammer, it's a good topic!

Personally, I don't really give a shit about spoilers. It's rare that knowing one will ruin an experience for me, because it can make it interesting to figure out how the thing is going to arrive at the spoilery bit. That, and if something can be completely ruined by a spoiler, it probably wasn't worth me watching it in the first place.

BUT this does not mean that I (intentionally) spoil stuff for other people who care about them more than me, because that is a dick move. I'd never want to hurt someone else's experience like that.

BUT ALSO the general widening of what's considered a "spoiler" these days, does kind of make it harder to talk about things. Because there's less appointment viewing, it's harder to be sure that everyone is on the same page, or up to the same episode. Which also makes it harder to avoid spoilers.

    - Have you seen the latest episode of WandaVison?
    - Not yet

    What's hard about that?

And, to be fair, that is literally the last part of the story and meeting him is the difference between 'playing' and 'played'.

My lad has been working his way through Harry Potter and he told me the other day that his mate told him that Dumbledore dies. I want to deck that kid for him!

My sister had that printed on a t-shirt. Not sure what she was thinking.

I probably wrote this earlier in the thread but many moons ago I was on my way out with a girlfriend to see 6th Sense and my brother shouted the ending out to us.

I stewed on this for years and, since he was a big potter fan, when OOTP came out, I went into a bookshop, scanned the last few pages and text him 'SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE'.

When LOTR was coming out at the cinema one of my friends let slip that Gandalf dies - then tried to make amends with a double spoiler ‘don’t worry he comes back in the next one’

It felt like 18 years was probably long enough to mitigate needing tags.

One of those t-shirts that changes depending on the angle you look at it from.
