Little help with my DVD-ROM drive

I've just noticed that my DVD-ROM drive's not working. I've tried using DVDs, DVD-ROMs, CD_-ROMs, and audio CDs with it and none of them work. I've tried restarting it and it's still not working. The only thing I've done recently is swap my memory sticks, I don't recal knocking anything when I did that though, I'm completely stumped. It seems to spin the disk then give up right at the point where it seems to get going.

It's a Samsung DVD-ROM SD-616Q if you want to know.

    Check your drivers.

Click start and then control panel, swich to classic view and click on system, click on harware and then device manager. Click on your CD/DVD ROM drive, you'll will be informed if the device is working properly.

I've checked the drivers, and it says that the device is working properly, but it's not!

I guess I'll try unplugging them and plugging them then.

By any chance do you have Windows xp SP2 installed?
  • Deleted user 2 January 2005 22:28:04
Haven't got any drivers to rollback to. Rebooted with disconnected, then rebooted again with it connected, still not working. And I can't try it on another computer (yet) since I haven't got another one. Won't be anything to do with the lens will it? Except if it was then it should say that there's a problem with it, but it says it's working properly.

Stupid computers, they'll never take over man.

Yeah, but I'm pretty sure I've used it after I installed it, quite a bit actually.
  • Deleted user 2 January 2005 22:38:44
Yeah, dammit. I used it fairly often.

I have a similar problem with my printer. It won't print out anything at all no matter what I try and whenever I go to control panel to test it my machine also says there is nothing wrong with the device. I've even tried uninstalling it and then reinstalling it god knows how many times and yet it still comes up with all these error messages about the documents I try printing off failing to print like half an hour after waiting for the printer to actually print them all off. Damn thing.

I have lost rewriting abilities on my DVD rewriter, (windows does not even recognise writable media, but the drive spins up as if it detected it.) and I noticed this problem a few days AFTER upgrading to SP2. In the first couple of days I burnt a few discs without any problems.

    I know what I blame...

Click start, go to add hardware click, I've already installed the device, in the list of hardware you'll see your CD/DVD drive, double click, to enable, you may have to use your system disk for the drivers. If you haven't any drivers go to Samsung.com.

I've just emailed them, I downloaded all the firmware upgrades and it's still not working. I can't believe that the SP2 has anything to do with it, but it's looking like one of the last options.

Hmmm, guess I'll try system restore then :/

Well uninstalling SP2 did sod all, I'm running out of options now :(

Why not buy a new drive for it?

Heh. Yeah I'll try other options before just buying a new one, I'm not made of money :)

You should not of uninstalled SP2 as it's no longer available after 31/12/04. Have you tried a System Restore? If it doesn't change anything you can always undo your last Restore. Samsung and Delilah FFS. :)

Because every new copy of Windows XP has the SP2 included, Microsoft feel that everyone who needed the upgrade has had sufficient time to do so.

We installed the "don't install sp2" regkey on the pc's at work to stop auto-update until we'd tested sp2 on production machines and that date was extended for 6 months until April i'm sure. There's also nothing on their website about a cutoff date.
I've not installed it on my home pc yet as i'm not online and haven't had a need to yet so i might be asking for a copy of that disk Homer.

Is there anything you'll do in return? I did also give you your Gmail account after all! :)

It's actually Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 6a, how on earth did I get that mixed up. Well I do know as I was having some problems with Windows XP and that announcement was adjacent to the SP2 details. Sorry. :)
