It's actually Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 6a, how on earth did I get that mixed up. Well I do know as I was having some problems with Windows XP and that announcement was adjacent to the SP2 details. Sorry. :)

Does this mix up of yours have anything to do with being 47 old man? :)

We had a techie here that had spent the best part of a morning trying to install NT SP6a while we were out fixing stuff, then i wandered over, had a look and told him that it might be a good idea to install NT first. :)

No it's because I'm trying to do too many things at once, I installed my old Windows SP1 on my new PC. The version I was using was OEM, I was having the odd problem. I learned a lot of interesting things reading Microsofts licencing policy. I thought a copy of Windows was like a TV licence, you could use it on as many different PC's in your own home at the one time. Apparently you can only use the full version of Windows XP on one PC, you have to uninstall it, before reinstalling and reregistering it on a different computer. As for OEM versions of Windows they can only be registered to one PC and the software is non transferable. Anyway the problems I was having had nowt to do with Windows, yet I read so much information that I seen that Microsoft were no longer supporting SP2 when it was actually Windows NT 4.0 Enterprise Edition Service Pack 6a. It's got nothing to do with my age.

cubby have you tried a different IDE cable and checking the cables are seated tight on the mobo and the drive?
I've been bitten like this a few times, of course once or twice it has been a dead drive though. :(

My DVD drive conveniently refuses to play DVDs at all. I've got a feeling I may have been had when I bought it - some sod clearly got a normal CD-ROM drive and spent hours and hours carving a perfect "DVD" logo into the plastic bezel just so they could have a laugh at my expense.

    Fucker.

Oh yeah, I reckon your drive is fucked, by the way. If you can, try it in another PC or try someone else's drive in yours. I doubt it's anything drivery because Windows has handled all that stuff automatically pretty well for as long as I can remember. My guess is a faulty drive.

I've checked the cables, and they seem in good condition, but I haven't tried a different IDE cable. That's worth looking into.

Like I've said Cubby, I made a mistake, I was reading through some details on the SP2 info site. Blar, blar, blar, then I noticed, " This will not be available after 31/12/04 " (But it wasn't SP2) It didn't effect me because I've got SP2 on my new version of windows. Have you checked your Bios Cubby? Which shows what HDD, CD/DVD/RW you've got, check it out somehow the drive might be on disabled.

Yeah I didn't notice your correction till just after I posted, I edited it straight away though. God this shows how little I know about computers, how do you check the BIOS?

yup, if a different cable doesn't help and the jumpers on the back of the drive are correct and it doesn't appear in the bios then it is definately fexxor'd.
