I tried Project Cars 2 after getting excited about VR racing games in this thread, but had to get a refund after just under an hour after suffering the worst (and only proper) motion sickness I've ever had in VR. Oh well! Elite Dangerous is fine, DCS is fine (although I get a vertigo sensation from it a bit), HL:Alyx was totally fine. Boneworks made me feel slightly off, but I think it has so much inverse kinematic and weird movement stuff going on that it just generally made my body feel disconnected from my eyes in a very unpleasant way. |

Registered 16 years agoDriving games sometimes have a bunch of options, I believe PC2 has world movement and shake at high speed among a load of other things to change.
Tbh you just get used to it over time if you enjoy something enough in small doses, I can turn on fixed perspective in Dirt Rally 2 and feel overwhelmed in a minute or less.
I have a friend who wanted me to try and make him sick with vr, tried him on all the silly roller coasters and other usual things, what did work was unintentional, he went on the Nurbergring in Assetto Corsa and didnt realise my set up has 3 pedals, after half a lap of using the clutch to brake in a laferrari and the mess of that had him.

Registered 17 years agoTbh it made me feel so awful that I doubt I'll try another VR racing game.
The sensation of speed was really good though. I'm a bit jealous of those who can stomach racing games, as it's definitely one of the more natural and immediately impressive applications of VR. -

Registered 17 years agoAnd why anyone would want to get motion sickness is beyond me. I felt really nauseous for a full two hours after PC2 the other day. I half expected to still feel sick when I woke up the next morning. -

Shame about the racing games, I'd just say go something slow and tinker with the comfort options for a while, if its not right just have a break. I barely played HL Alyx and other games because I'm now getting into iracing with the odd break on DCS. I am going triple screen as well for iracing as fuck being in a vr headset for multiple hours at a time on any game imo, my eyes go first and bad news follows. -

Registered 17 years agoYeah - driving games there are two things you should do to help yourself.
1. Enable all the comfort settings they offer as a default.
2. Don't spend all your time looking out the side windows. That's guaranteed to fuck you up. Ease into it by trying to keep looking ahead.
I am prone to debilitating simulator sickness, easily the worst among the people I know with VR, but I can handle hours on PC1 or Dirt Rally.
Shame if you've "broken" yourself for them though.

EDIT: A quick Google seems to say "no", sadly...

Yeah, this was similar for me. I felt absolutely awful when I played PC1 for 10/15 minutes. Like terrible for the next 2 hours. And just like you, doings barrel rolls in Elite Dangerous was absolutely fine. Amazing how detached from your brain you can be.

I'd be willing to bet that if you did barrel rolls in Elite Dangerous whilst looking out the side windows you'd feel equally bad.

Genuinely, when I twigged what was fucking me up in racing games (see above) it was the thing that enabled me to finally play them. YMMV, but gotta be worth a shot to salvage an entire genre. -

Registered 18 years agoI'm not so sure - I remember looking all over the place trying to keep track of the other ships during a dogfight. For me, the cockpit in ED just seemed to completely fool me. Similar for Wipeout on PSVR.
Tbh, I'm not super into racers anyway, so it wasn't a huge deal for me. I do love Dirt Rally though, but not had a chance to try in VR. -

Registered 17 years agoYeah I look all over the place while zooming around in Elite. I think maybe if there was a Horizon in Elite, it might also cause motion sickness. Dunno. -

Registered 20 years agoSo, to report back on the Quest wireless PCVR thing, some games
have compatibility issues but the vast majority don't. The only one I've encountered so far that hasn't worked is DCS flight sim.
I'm playing Half-Life:Alyx wirelessly and it's 100% great, playable, responsive and nice.gif)
EDIT:
Compatibility list is here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1gRbhMw-8PDl1m2ujs_uWaxMeFxjWjihKtRjFGpd-nFY/edit#gid=2101885392

Registered 17 years agoAmazing. Have you played Alyx on a regular wired headset? I wonder how much of a discernible difference there is to image quality and response time. -

Registered 20 years ago@christourlord Sadly I haven't. I've played a lot of VR before (PSVR and native Quest) but not PC VR. I'm sure there is a hit to picture quality and latency, but if so it is very subtle.
One thing's for sure, this proves it's possible so I'm sure we'll have an out-of-the-box wireless PC headset soon enough

Registered 20 years ago(I don't think this could be very well productised as it stands though - it requires that you have a good broadband router, wired PC connection, etc, etc, etc.... - so I guess that for it to be sold as a plug-and-play product it will need to offer a transmitter in the box or something)... -

Registered 18 years agoRPS had a good write-up on the Oculus Quest the other day. Essentially said it's pretty great, but the lower graphical fidelity is noticeable compared to the Rift S, although you get used to it. Also not as comfortable. But everything else sounded pretty great across the board. -

Registered 15 years agoHP Reverb G2 looks like a promising addition. Higher resolution than the Index but with smaller FOV but also with a lower price ($600). Pre-order starts today in the US.

Registered 12 years agoThe problem with that kind of resolution is not even a 2080ti can run it at 90hz. You'd need that foveated rendering that people have been talking about for years. -

The roadtovr crew managed to run Alyx on it. I'm sure they have a good PC but they didn't mention any difficulties.

Registered 18 years agoAll depends on the game. Alyx has a fairly aggressive dynamic resolution thing going on and I'm sure the extra resolution would be noticeable on anything with small text - I know that using the desktop on my Index is a lot better than when I'm running my Quest through Link. -

Whats your PC spec for using quest and wireless? I'm planning a build so any info would be beneficial. Thanks

Registered 20 years ago@Dr-Strangelove No worries. You might be able to make do with less than my spec, but I've got a 3800x CPU, 2070 Super GPU, decent SSD, 32GB RAM.
However the two really important bits I think are - wire the PC and buy a motherboard with an Intel NIC, and buy a decent router.
My motherboard is a B450F and my router's an RT-AC68U
