It lasted longer than I thought it would....

Hope all involved find new employment, I wonder how much money BT will lose? Didn't they buy a stake in them?

I should edit, the title is a little misleading its not offline yet, hopefully it can be saved!

I guess a buyout was the last hope and when Sony went with Gaikai, game over.

Sucks to be the investor in this but I think most people were sceptical from the start and performance left a lot to be desired.
  • Deleted user 17 August 2012 20:18:53
A shame but last time I looked their pricing model was awful.

Interested to see an official announcement on this - not that I know anyone who uses it, but they seemed to be doing OK and they're still making noises like everything's OK.

I'm sure it will be as well when nearly everyone has super fast broadband.
doesn't need everyone to do it, just enough to make the service viable.

Guess this was always a danger (even though they're not offline yet). Some people could have spent loads building up a nice little collection only for it to be worth nothing.
I personally like onlive but have only bought sale items and freebies because of this reason, which isn't going to make them much of a profit.

It was the pricing that killed them. They aimed it at people who had shitty hardware (IE paupers) but then charged them 40-50 bucks for the privilege for new releases when the games are going for half that on virtually every other DD store. Also the fact they seemed to focus on releasing shitty titles that would run on a netbook anyway.

"PLAY SEGA MEGADRIVE GAMES ON ONLIVE!"

err, why would we want to do that exactly?
  • Deleted user 17 August 2012 20:59:20
They actually gave away some indie games today as well. If the rumours are true, this facebook comment becomes hilarious:

"OnLive ‎@Will - they are YOURS! Play them on almost any Mac or PC using the OnLive client as long as you want!

Woo, maybe the consoles will be a collectors item.

And when I say collectors item, I mean worthless paperweight.

That said, it could be like the shitty GOG relaunch.

"GOG AS A COMPANY NO LONGER EXISTS

    ...

BECAUSE WE'RE NOW GOG 2.0. PSYCHE"

You pay a load for some games you dont actually own, the company closes and you're left with fuck all except memories and an empty wallet. Fuck cloud gaming.
  • Deleted user 17 August 2012 21:11:48
But memories are worth a thousand, somethings. Or was it pictures?

    Fuck you On-live.

I gave up on them when I asked them to remove my Credit Card details a couple of weeks after I made my one and only purchase, and they said it was impossible. Their system just can't do it. Possibly true, but why make it like that? Even Xbox Live eventually got it right and let me remove my card on the site/console without having to phone them up.

Still, when I did try it out it was okay. Shame for the staff that were let go, hope they all find work.

Who knows when Steam or whoever caves. Gabe said he would make sure people had keys for their games so they could keep them but I imagine that wouldn't stretch to every publisher and game. Walled gardens suck, including Steam. Even worse is these authentication servers, they won't be up forever. You really need these Steam like sales across all services because you could be left with nothing just like that. At least with GOG and some indies being DRM free, you can avoid the end game by backing the stuff up.

    Not actually dead then:

"We can now confirm that the assets of OnLive, Inc. have been acquired into a newly-formed company and is backed by substantial funding, and which will continue to operate the OnLive Game and Desktop services, as well as support all of OnLive's apps and devices, as well as game, productivity and enterprise partnerships. The new company is hiring a large percentage of OnLive, Inc.'s staff across all departments and plans to continue to hire substantially more people, including additional OnLive employees. All previously announced products and services, including those in the works, will continue and there is no expected interruption of any OnLive services.
We apologize that we were unable to comment on this transaction until it completed, and were limited to reporting on news related to OnLive's businesses. Now that the transaction is complete, we are able to make this statement."
