So just had Virgin installed today. Will see how they fare for the next fortnight and dump if rubbish. Just did a few speed checks and I'm getting c.25mbps down and from 7-27mbps up! Apart from the upload (which ranges from adding a few mbps to near quadrupling what we had!), we're getting the same download on what should be a 4 times faster connection. Will this settle down and speeds improve in due course? Or is this what I have to look forward to?

    Thinking of getting virgin media.

TV mix and 100 vivid £50 per month.
Can get it cheaper with a phone line for 12 months but I really don't want the landline

I am getting the Full House Movies TV bundle and 200 Vivid and Weekends phone for £55 per month (12 month contract - jumps to £80 after but will just leave then I reckon). Looks like it's still active too - click here (sorry, massive link otherwise).

And I should be getting £220 from Topcashback too. Looks like this is down to £110 now though. But still a saving.

Be interesting to see what my speeds are like this evening.

@The_Goon speed test at various times of day and see what you get, it doesn't behave like a BT line (as far as I know) so it won't get better / settle down over time. You will most likely see different performance at different times of day - I get 200 in the morning, 5 at night currently. If your line isn't broken and over utilisation is the problem then you either decide to ring up and get money back, or cancel, or do nothing :)

Very surprised at the upload speed. VERY surprised. Seeing as Virgin cap @ 7mb standard.

Yup pretty inconsistent. My dad has 200mb but sometimes it struggles to stream iPlayer. Pretty dumb, but they like their headline figures
  • Deleted user 26 January 2017 18:16:23
@Rivuzu my upload with Virgin is a solid 20 usually (which is what I pay for), I guess most people are just pulling stuff down and not trying to upload.

What the fuck. I've literally just moved away from them because they said they couldn't increase my upload speed, specifically because it was in their policy.

On my bill, this Sky increase is roughly 20%. :/
  • Deleted user 26 January 2017 18:40:49
@Rivuzu did you ask for a download increase too?

I didn't. Was already on 100mb, didn't see the need.
  • Deleted user 26 January 2017 19:12:24
Gotta pay for that down if you want that up unfortunately, choices are:

    50/3
    100/6
    200/12
    200/20
    300/30

I just had Virgin rip out their sub standard shit out of my home and now in the lounge have the V6 TiVo box and the superhub 3, getting some insane BB speeds 220+ down 24+ up.

Before the upgrade I was running 1st gen TiVo box which is so bloody slow and the Superhub 2 and paying for 150mbs, on average was nudging 70mbs Down and around 7 up, massive improvement for me and the family as our old wifi use to drop out every half and hour or so, not anymore!

Think I'll stick with my Vodafone 70/70 down/up honestly after moving suppliers.

@Rivuzu you get 70Mb upload on a FTTC line or is that a 4G package? Thought the max anyone offers over VDSL is around 20Mb right now?

Working from home, I could do with a better upload speed.

@MMMarmite I'm talking out of my ass. Did a speedtest when it was first set up and it was 70/70. just ran it again. Now it's 80/20. Blah. Whatever. Still nearly 3x what I was getting with Virgin on the up and it's helped my work a shit load.

Plus no line rental and thay.

Getting a consistent(ish) 40/12 at the moment on wifi which is a decent improvement over PlusNet. Baby woke me in the early hours of the morning and I got 100 down so while it's not 200 I'm fairly happy with net speed. Although not sure I'd be saying that if I was paying full price.

TV UI is god awful but channels are decent enough. For £10 over what I was paying for PlusNet and basic Sky, I'm very happy actually. Leaning towards keeping hem now I think although we'll see what the next few days/weeks bring.

@The_Goon ask them to have a look at your connection, if power levels and things are wrong they might get someone out to do some tweaking.

    @The_Goon

Thanks for that. We have just this minute decided to go with the same offer. I've gone through qudico so I'm not entirely sure I'll get the cash back rates there offering but was worth a try.

The price difference wasn't much from the level of service we could have had with BT.

Anyone have the slightest clue about where to start for looking for a FTTP installation? Whole situation seems to be a complete and utter clusterfuck.

PLEASE TAKE MY MONEY AND RUN SPARKLY GLASS THINGS TO HOUSE, KTHX.

@Psychotext you'll need to find an ISP that offers it first, most won't touch FTTP for consumers as it's too expensive to install (digging up roads and the like) and wholesale pricing is still quite high, usually involves a 2-3 year contract too.

Spectruminternet.com seem to offer it in certain areas (I'm guessing based on BT exchange capabilities) but all their packages have usage limits and top out at 330/30Mb (highest speed offered on BT FTTPoD right now).

You might want to see if Gigaclear have any plans for your area, if you're looking for a 1Gb fibre connection.

Yeah, CityFibre, Gigaclear, Hyperoptic. But you're not going to get those in Wales, sadly. BT also offer FTTP if they've fibred up the cabinet. Could always look at leased business lines too.

I think Spectrum Internet are actually fairly local. I'll see about the business options too, cheers.

@Psychotext business leased lines are going to be pretty expensive as they're just for you so no shared costs anywhere.

You'd be looking at around £200 a month for 10Mb on a 3-5 year contract with installation in the £2k-£10k+ range depending on distance from the nearest POP. 100Mb would probably be around the £500 a month mark these days, a few years ago the company I worked for was paying just under £1k for a 100Mb line from Virgin Media.

I was expecting a first year cost of £10k based on the figured I'd seen, so that sound about in line.

Is irrelevant now anyway, place wasn't suitable.

Do PlusNet let you phone up and haggle?
Cost has just doubled after introductory offer ended. Introductory offer for new customers is now £10 less than I'm paying, feel like a moan...

Can't see why not....only one way to find out. These days I'm only interested in a full 12 month discount, not just for 3 months etc.
