Don't even get 3g here and I'm stuck with a 2mb connection for my broadband due to the age of the exchange. 1gb takes about an hour if I'm lucky. Needless to say I hate you all. |

I've finally come to the end of my Talk Talk contract (yes, I know) so I'm willing to pay the extra to get different line installed. -

Registered 20 years agoHave any of you ever used Plusnet?
They're currently offering one of those '£2.50 a month for a year's worth of broadband' deals with (as far I can see) free installation - and seem to get fairly decent reviews.
It looks like you can get BT Sport/ESPN for an extra £5.99 a month, too.
edit: Christ, I sound like a planEt.

Registered 16 years agoUsed plusnet for adsl and they were quite good actually. Reliable, had one fault in the years I was with them, sorted it out quite quickly.
BT: They've serially fucked me up since day one.
I think the problem is when I originally signed up it cocked up (their fault) and ever since then there's been something weird about my account. The manage your account website often throws up errors. Attempts at correcting this have met by responses varying from fecklessness to being down right rude.
But appart from that, it's also the most unreliable ISP I have ever been with. My connection would fail several times a week.
I'm biding my time till my contract ends. It'll mean being capped probably but I'd rather have a capped one I can rely on rather than an uncapped one that falls over all the time. -

Been on plusnet for about 8 years, would use no one else to be honest. Fast, reliable, local support. Costs a bit more but worth it. -

The pricks throttle the speeds on torrents, everything else is fine.

Registered 19 years agoI swear by Plusnet these days.
When we moved from BT they kept calling us and asking if we wanted to switch back.
Told them we got better customer service from Plusnet and he condescendingly said "you do realise they're owned by BT Group so so that's not really possible"...
Idiots. Stay the fuck away from BT -

Registered 17 years agoPlusnet have a good rep for customer service.
Sky Fibre has been solid for me, never had a single outage that required tech support (had to reboot the router once I think) and the one or two times I've had to contact them about billing or something their CS people seemed fine.

Plenty of providers don't throttle at all now.

Virgin are one of the worst for it though.

Registered 16 years agoBut throttling isn't just done to irritate consumers. It's to prevent a tiny number of heavy users slowing the network to a crawl.
I've never noticed throttling and I would consider myself a moderate to heavy user. -

Should have told the twat that it was very possible considering they have a different customer service centre.

Registered 8 years agoSwitched from BT to TalkTalk a couple years back and had no issues with them and consistent 24 meg download. I moved house a couple months ago and I keep having ping issues with BT (can't switch to anyone else in my area, small town) and very low download speeds even though I'm paying for 8 meg. -
Virgin putting the price up again. Now paying £40 just for sodding Internet, but I can't get fibre where I live so don't really have a choice.
I swear Virgin know this and abuse it. Might just drop to a lower package. I wonder what's the lowest I can get away with, as I use Steam and Netflix heavily. -

Registered 16 years ago@Chopsen Really? I have it here in Stroud and its bloody great. Goes through my existing telephone line (engineer had it up and running in 30mins). 60Mb* connection is very nice thanks. It's easy to bash BT (I have had issue in the past) but with this I haven't but praise. Oh and at £19 I think its worth it.
*Just did a speed test 71Mb.

I'm inclined to say the same. Since getting Infinity over a year back i've had little to no problems with BT. Very close to the cabinet so get a constant 76 down 19 up. Dont use torrents so the capping doesnt bother me. I think it helps that i live in a relatively small town and the general public see fibre as being witchcraft so i'm probably one of the only people connected to the exchange.

Registered 12 years agoMore Plusnet love here. I've had no technical problems and the line is reasonably fast (I see about 10 of my 20 meg adsl). You can get support via casual moaning and sideways references on Twitter too and they always reply in good spirit. -

Registered 17 years agoI have Ask4. They're by far and away the best provider I've ever known, both in terms of service (no caps, no throttling, full speed at all times) and support (20 seconds to get through, everyone on the call desk is a techie, they're all from Sheffield. Every time they're doing maintenance I get an email saying "we're very sorry but in three weeks on this date you may notice a slight dip in performance between 03:30am and 03:45am"). There's just the slight downside that you have to move into a building that they offer a connection in. Of which I believe there are currently 12. -

Registered 17 years agoBT, TalkTalk, Sky and BT have no traffic management or usage caps on their top packages now, in case anybody was wondering. If you've been with them a while you may be on a legacy deal with limits still in place so you'll need to talk to them about switching to a newer package.

Steam is the only thing I'd be concerned about, you'll see a big drop off in download speeds moving from cable to ADSL. Netflix doesn't actually need that much, 0.5Mb is the minimum and 5Mb is recommended for HD.
as I use Steam and Netflix heavily. -
@mal Although Plusnet are now owned by BT, they very much retain their own independence and control over how they manage their network (and the user's on that network). -
I'm with Plusnet fibre at the moment and it's great so far. No problems.
However come September when the contract is up I plan on playing BT, Plusnet and Sky off each other.
Which will probably be Sky as I have my tv with them but you never know. -

Registered 9 years agoWhat's the general opinion on Sky broadband and the bundle talk package?.
I'm looking to change my ISP in the next couple of weeks and my options are pretty limited, there's only TalkTalk and Sky LLU available on my local exchange.
My current broadband is capped at 50GB a month. This used to be alright but now I'm interested in streaming movies and with the growing size of digital games this 50GB just isn't going to cut it anymore. -
As I said above, I've found Sky to be great, reliable and fast service and had no issues with support. Dunno about the phone side of things, does anyone use them for calls anymore? I'd get rid of that if it wasn't required for broadband.
Download caps aren't an issue either. I download and upload a ridiculous amount (in the terabyte region some months) and never heard from them about it.
