Watch the video demonstration for an overview, any comments or questions welcome. Project overview I have a hardcore gaming rig but sometimes after a hard days work i do like to veg out on the couch with a pad for some casual gaming. Unfortunately the xbox and ps3 is ready for the retirement home so I've decided to try and build my own next gen console for my TV. This intregrates Steam Big Picture and XBMC so I dont have to use a keyboard and mouse at all. Check out the results here. For best results watch on Youtube in HD http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yw-PNj7ML90 For a build log check my thread on overclockers. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18444314"]http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18444314 Edited by tezza192 at 04:14:44 25-09-2012 |

Registered 16 years agoFrom the sound of the heavy breathing, you could do with spending less time vegged out on the sofa.
Does look quite slick though, although I'm sure you could do something better to jump into Steam from XBMC. Dunno though, XMBC's changed a lot since the old version running on my old xbox.
Not sure I'd have a stonking great white PC next to me telly, but whatever floats your boat I guess.
One question - are you sure it's all controlled from the pad? -

You've built a PC not a console. -

Now there's a concept that needs debating. With Steam's 'Big Picture' installed and set to run on startup, and a remote 360 controller plugged in, it's not all that different is it?

Cost? Chap's OC thread says he's working to a £500 budget. £170 for the Lian Li, £140 for the Silverstone, £55 for the BitFenix.

It's a PC with a game focused interface suitable for the living room.

You've built a PC not a console.
A console is a fixed hardware standard identified by the manufacturer and is a closed platform that requires their certification/approval to publish on it.
Loosen the definition enough and my phone is a console. -

Steam games require certification etc. so would all Valve need to do now is publish the hardware requirements and we're done?

You're suggesting it's not casual to bring home a box, plug one end into the wall, and all three cables of the component cable into the TV?
- troll console owners as 'casual' -

Only if you're going to cripple it so only steam games will play.

Registered 13 years agoI've given something like this a lot of thought. But honestly I'd just like some sort of dock for my laptop to get it connected to the video quickly and boot into this on startup. -
