The Metros would have been better had they not been a straight line from start to finish. Being based off the Stalker series by the same developers, you'd think they'd know the power of a semi-open world. No one did it better either. This one is hinted at being more open, but looking at that demo it looks like a fucking corridor all over again. Oh shit, just realised I surpassed 90k posts. Somehow I find myself less impressed with new tech as time passes. It used to blow me away a long time ago ("Whoa Super FX Chip!" "Whoa Gouraud Shading! This looks so real!"), today I just think yea that looks impressive, but we're just going to get used to it quickly, not enjoying games any more than before.
I am excited about this new tech though. It's the most excited I can remember being since getting my Geforce 3 and seeing all the possible effects with programmable shaders. In fact this is probably the most revolutionary new tech since programmable shaders became a thing.
In fact, I am concerned that the opposite might happen. Given the nature and demands of this tech, I'm afraid the first generation of games using it may be dominated by cramped corridors with few actors, being very shiny but a downgrade in terms of gameplay. -

Registered 16 years agoReal time raytracing is a game changer in terms of visual quality, but I think we might be some way off it being practical in game terms, especially if we're talking 4k and at least 30fps. The next ten years should be really interesting. -

Registered 12 years agoI’m just interested because it would solve stuff like aliasing and other issues with rasterised rendering ( i think, i’m no expert ).
It’s just one of those things that’s been 5 years away since the 90s.
You can see in the demo that they have to keep the scenes very basic and it’s probably running on 4 titans but small steps ey? -

Registered 12 years agoHmm that metro clip really doesn't look that special, says it uses nvidia rtx which might be different to the Unreal Engine thing I posted earlier? To me anyway only the water and maybe the fridge look like they have some ray traced reflections. -
@DrStrangelove I know what you mean. The early 3D days seemed amazing. Big jumps with every new tech. When you got a “next generation” console it was next generation. I think ever since pixel shaders brought a new level of realism around the time of the original Xbox it’s just been an evolution ever since. Yes VR, but that’s an additional thing IMO.
I wouldn’t mind if Ray tracing brought GPUs to the knees again. When we went from 60fps 2D sprite based games to 3D that struggled to get 20fps it was acceptable because it was an exciting transition.
