That's another thing Apple has done away with. The unified screentarget for iOS. It's no where near as fragmented as Android but last time I counted there are shit... How many screen sizes and ratios are there? 6? 4? |

Fair points. Is this mini really pocket sized then? If so I concur. I'm just disappointed so much effort is going into a gap in the market rather than something shiny I really want.

I don't know, the iPad is definitely too big unless you want to carry it in an extra bag, no? Unless you wear baggy trousers.
@beastmaster
The iPad isn't too big to carry, and I never feel the screen is too large.
I just don't get it (but totally prepared to be wrong). My rabid Apple-fanboy friend feels exactly the same mind you..gif)
Probably perfect for people who want to carry it with them all the time - which is nothing I need, though. And which only will make sense if it has 3G.
It is all about me after all. -

Registered 17 years agoIt's not been confirmed what resolution these are going to run on? I just assume it'll be a retina type display as they won't go backwards with a lower resolution. -

Registered 13 years agoConsensus seems to be 1024x768, like the ipad 2, which would make sense in terms of not having to redesign apps. Which would give it a higher PPI than the ipad 2 (obviously), but still some way off retina levels I believe. -

Can't possibly imagine it'd be same res as current iPad for reasons of cost and battery. Be a bit of short term thinking using some kind of middle ground res given the current app situation and the inevitable 2048x1536 mini v2 end of next year. Which is great for Apple as there'll be a tonne who'll buy a v1 then upgrade to a v2 next year. Pity, I like the idea of smaller form factor and lighter, but I can't purchase new stuff with sub 200 ppi, I'm utterly spoilt. My MacBook Air, with its lowly 127 ppi, still is absolutely fine but I don't hold that upto my face.
Re: pocketability, 4:3 ratio means it'll be a bit of a squeeze into a coat pocket and no chance in a trouser pocket. My 7.7" Tab, 1280x800, 16:10, fits easily in a coat and even in a trouser in a pinch (although I wouldn't want to go hiking or running up steps with it in there) by virtue of being narrower.

Registered 18 years agoI wouldn't touch a W8 tablet with a barge pole in the first year, let others suffer early adopter woes and few apps, then swoop in later if it ever improves. Sincerely hope W8 succeeds and innovates though, as much as I like my iPad, Apple really need a monumental kick up the arse in the tablet space. -

Had no problems with the 5's camera to be honest, only seen the purple haze once and that was in conditions that I doubt any phone camera could take decent pics. I can recreate the purple thing certainly, but in actual use only seen it once. Never experienced antenna gate in the past either. Think a lot of these gripes across a lot of gadgets, not just Apple's, are from whiney overpriveleged first worlders. Have had flakey wifi speeds though, hoping that's fixed sooner rather than later. Side by side with my iPad, running the same speedtest, pinging the same server, I can get 30-40mbit on the iPad , 1-2mb on the phone 0_0. Other times, the phone can exceed the iPad.

It's the software situation on the W8 tablets that'd make me reluctant to dive in early. That, and the fact the Pro tablets look far more interesting in the long term.

Registered 19 years agoAs an iPhone user I've always felt over-endowed in the thumb department. Luckily my 5 comes on Monday.
I personally don't see a market for the iPad Mini. I have a MacBook Pro and an iPhone, so I've always ruled out the requirement of any tablet for myself anyway, though I do see a market for a standard sized tablet for other people. A small tablet is basically a large phone that doesn't call, right? -

@Facepalm so do I, only have apple or osx in the house, just saying jobs was a dick.
It's also unfair to say they don't innovate as it to say the opposite. Trying not to go it but I think there biggest innovation other than a workable windows based GUI is probably their ouch for USB, caught on quick in computing world -
