Knew nothing about this film, opens Friday here. Directed by Ben Affleck who also stars in it Also stars Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Victor Garber, and Bryan Cranston Plot True Story based on declassified CIA documents In 1979, the American embassy in Iran was invaded by Iranian revolutionaries and several Americans are taken hostage. However, six manage to escape to the official residence of the Canadian Ambassador and the CIA is eventually ordered to get them out of the country. With few options, exfiltration expert Tony Mendez devises a daring plan: to create a phony Canadian film project looking to shoot in Iran and smuggle the Americans out as its production crew. With the help of some trusted Hollywood contacts, Mendez creates the ruse and proceeds to Iran as its associate producer. However, time is running out with the Iranian security forces closing in on the truth while both his charges and the White House have grave doubts about the operation themselves. Registered 11 years agoSaw a bus advert for this and as I love Breaking Bad Cranston's name triggered my interest. Watched a trailer and it looks really good. Not the sort of thing I'd go to the cinema to see (mind you nothing is these days!) but will certainly check it out at rental/home release.

Registered 12 years agoSaw through SeeFilmFirst a couple of weeks ago and was really impressed. It lays the tension on pretty thick (What's that? Your car won't start?) but it's well enough made that you're still on the edge of your seat.
Definitely worth a watch -

Registered 10 years agoTo be fair to Affleck, he's a good director - though the jury's out over whether he needs to be in his films (see: Gone Baby Gone, though it is his brother ).

Registered 11 years agoSaw it earlier today and thought it was very good. Great cast and a fantastic story well told, new footage merged very well with old. I thought Affleck was good too - its about strong words softly spoken here -I thought he pulled off a good performance in a great film. Just one heavy touch in the tension department late on, but nothing to spoil a thoroughly enjoyable film.
Very much recommended. -

Registered 10 years agoSaw it a couple of weeks ago. Its superb and I would highly recommend people see it at the cinema because its a film with a lot of tension and with very impressive cinematography. It captures the era really well using real life images in such a way that it shows you the threat they are under whilst not laying the politics on too strong.
I saw Bond the week after this and found it dull, this film is a true undercover agent story yet it is far more exciting.
Just a little warning Cranston and Goodman are good but they have quite small parts. -

I though it was really good for what it's worth. Compelling viewing, especially as Affleck manages not to shit himself on screen.

I'm not sure I'd describe it as exciting, but it's enjoyable and very tense. I really liked it.
If you're the sort of person who thinks Transformers is a brilliant film, then Argo isn't for you. However, since you've started the thread, I suspect it's up your street.
