Helllo, Ive decided to take a foray into the world of PC building and have come up with the following, I'd like to double check everything is compatible, if theres anything obvious I've missed out and if I could get anything better for the same sort of money so I thought I'd turn to those more knowledgeable. Graphics Card Asus GeForce GTX 680 DirectCU II 2048MB GDDR5 429.95 Here Memory Corsair Vengeance 16gb 1600mhz 59.21 Here Processor Intel Core i7-3770k 236.94 Here Case NZXT H2 69.87 Here PSU Thermaltake PSU SMART 650W/ 80plus 71.81 Here Motherboard Gigabyte SKT-1155 Z77X-UD3H 119.24 [link url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Gigabyte-GA-Z77X-UD3H-SKT-1155-Z77X-UD3H-Motherboard/dp/tech-data/B007ORT0J4/ref=de_a_smtd ]Here[/link] Storage WD20EARX 2TB 74.94 Here OCZ Vertex Plus Series 120gb 63.99 Here Blu-Ray Asus BC-12B1ST/BLK/B/AS 12x Blu-Ray 41.99 Here Total 1116.94 Edited with new Motherboard Edited by INSOMANiAC at 14:44:49 14-11-2012 Edited by INSOMANiAC at 19:51:17 14-11-2012 |

Registered 13 years agoVery good point! Can you recommend a motherboard that has possible future SLi capabilities for the same sort of money? Cheers -

Registered 13 years agoI was thinking of calling it a 'custom built rig' but I really couldnt do it to myself.
Will the 650w PSU be sufficient for overclocking and SLi or will I need something bigger? -

Registered 13 years agoYes, yes I do !
Considering an ebay shop was trying to build me pretty much the same 'rig' for 2300 albeit with an extra 16gb of RAM I dont think its too bad a price if I can play the latest games and it has decent upgradeability

Registered 10 years agoI can play the latest games on a system built for me, including monitor and OS, for £680. Its false economy buying a pc that is future proof as it never happens like that. Paying more then £1000 seems an utter waste to me, but if each to their own -

Registered 9 years agoI would get the 670 instead of the 680 and maybe the 3570K instead of the 3770K and use the cash for a much bigger SSD.
Also, look at this motherboard -

Registered 13 years agoI realise it wont be future proof, but as you are aware you can go where you want with PC components and I'd just like to have a graphics card at the top end, when they come down in price I can SLi it when it starts to look like yesterdays news.
Now I know why you call yourself Andytheadequate!

AB's advice sounds good to me. Still getting a good spec and a ssd but will save yourself some money -

Thanks, that motherboard looks like it may be a better option, is gains on the 680 vs the 670 not worth the price hike then? To be honest as it stands, I dont have enough room in the spare room for a monitor so Im going to playing games on the relatively modest 720p for the time being.

A 560ti would be overkill for what you need.
Seriously you're massively over speccing this thing for your needs.
Get an entry level k series i5 Cpu and maybe a 250 quid 660ti. It'll be more than enough.
Edit: also SLILOL

Registered 16 years agoBut surely for the extra cash you'll spend on a more powerful gfx card and processor could pay for an upgrade in 18 months time to more power than you'll get now? -

I would be inclined to agree but he is playing on a 720p screen he can save enough to upgrade that and buy an awesome pc.

Especially not at 720p, it's a massive waste of money getting a card like that.

get a 660 or so and when you have a higher res display update then.
You only need 8GB RAM as well. -

As an example, Here is what I built recently, it can do pretty much anything at max settings at 1080p and is very quiet.
You could go a bit lower than that and upgrade your telly to a nice 1080p Plasma and later upgrade the GPU when necessary and cheaper. -
Toms Hardware rate the Radeon 7970 over either the 670 and the 680. Comparable performance to the 680 at about a tenner more than the cost of a 670.
Beyond this card the diminishing returns aren't worth it.
They also say that the core i5 3570 is the best CPU to get; beyond which the benefits are again, not worth the extra money. -

These cards are massive overkill for 720p and the talk of SLI is insanity, I think the OP should explaing better what he wants to do. -

Registered 13 years agoWell firstly, I dont have loads of money, in fact I have a grand life saving, woooo which I've decided to blow through sheer boredom.
I'd rather build it myself as it'll give me an excuse to get away from her and those twats eating giraffe phlegm in the jungle. I realise the 680 is overkill, im considering downsizing to the 670 I just dont want something that will be irrelevant in 12 months, I though I may as well get a better graphics card while I'm feeling frivolous. Also, I plan to squeeze a monitor in somewhere at some point, I may even replace the TV with one.
Ive looked at the mesh machines before, they are a good price but at the end of the day I could build one with a very similar spec but far superior GPU for exactly the same money, I think I will lower my expectations a bit and maybe just get 8gb ram and maybe the 870
As for my plan, I just want something that will play the newest games on the maximum settings at a decent framerate and play games for at least the next two to three years on a high setting. I basically just want to piss about and have good looking games.

Is it for the living room, spare room?
What is the monitor/TV?
BTW Blowing life savings out of boredom sounds utterly stupid and the kind of thing you'll massively regret later. -

Fair enough, I haven't looked into power consumption etc.
