90įc is pretty fucking warm in my book, I don't see how windows could fuck up cpu temps.
My money is on an incorrectly installed cooler. I say this because I once did this and did not know about it for almost a year. 3 of my 4 cores ran perfectly, one didn't because that corner didn't make a good contact because the cooler was touching a capacitor. Had to flip it 180į. And reverse it.

Nope. Using the GPU in the other port hasn't worked. Time to download the windows installer.

@Fake_Blood I'm going to repaste the cooler tomorrow along with a fresh install. It was built pretty much this time 2 years ago with none of these issues. I think the cooler has potentially come away during that time. We'll see.

Well I'm sure you'll be all glad to know that the PC is firing on all cylinders / cores again. Wiped the bastard clean last night and put the fresh install of windows on. She's purring once more.

Didn't have time to repaste the CPU cooler as I didn't sit down till half 10 and couldn't be arsed to look for something to remove the nuts. Maybe tonight.

The feeling of relief watching something load up perfectly. Bellissimo. I let itself get sorted after the first boot and opened the Nvidia control panel. I sort of knew it'd worked then because it loaded straight up and could navigate the tabs instantly, whereas before it was chugging and took a good 5 seconds to open each one.

    So fucking relieved.

Sounds like it just took a little while for the new GPU slot to start working.

    Glad i could help

Thank you all for your help too. Although many of the suggestions didn't alleviate the problem, at least I know more about what to look for if something happens in the future. Wouldn't have known how to do half the shit you all said.

I tried putting the GPU back in the top slot but it wouldn't boot windows and a red light (hardware warning I'm sure) came on the motherboard. Is there anything you have to change in the BIOS before switching slots? To be nitpicky, it looks too low down in the second slot.

    @the_milkybar_kid

Interesting. No there isn't a BIOS setting as far as i'm aware... some BIOSs have the option as to which display method you want to default to (onboard, pcie1, pcie2) but you havent touched that.

So my theory was that i've read before that you can fuck up your PCIE slots if you leave a heavy GPU in when you are moving your PC over long distances. It was anecdotal somewhere.

But actually now that you're saying your top slot won't work at all, i wonder if i was right

@THFourteen Thanks mate. Yeah, it's been sat in that PCIE slot all that time, maybe it caused stress to the internal pins? I'll have another go at it over the weekend when I come to re-paste the cooler and let you know.

I've pulled the trigger... The price I was getting the 8700k tipped me over...

ASUS Intel 1151 Socket Z370 Chipset Strix I D4 Mini ITX Motherboard - Black £185.99
Samsung 970 EVO 500 GB V-NAND M.2 PCI Express Solid State Drive - Black £136.76
    Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C15 XMP 2.0 £136.15
Thermaltake Core P1 Mini ITX Tempered Glass Edition £99.98
    Intel BX80684I78700K 8th Gen Core i7-8700K Processor £315.00

    £812 with a discount (about £60)

Needs a GPU. Then watercooling if I go that way.

    Anyone want to buy a 2500k? ;)

Rebuilt my family room PC into a Bitfenix Prodigy M case. Really like it actually. I wouldnít cram a whole lot of stuff in there as there isnít much in the way of cable management, and it only supports 120mm fans but for what I have in there itís ace.

Also cheeky CPU upgrade to an i5 4690k from eBay whilst I was at it :-)

Yeah good going on getting the 8700K for that. What the fuck is going on with Intel? When I was deciding on what CPU to get for a new build the 8700K was around 330 quid, now it's well over 400. O_o

    Intel seem fucked!

I just donít see any of it as necessary at the moment.

Having said that, going the piecemeal upgrade route often makes it seem a bit more palatable than having to buy the whole system outright!

Iím happy enough with my i7 4790k in my main rig. Double haswell baby.

I'm very happy with the 2700X, the temps are bloody good just using a Noctua air cooler but I turned off SMT just to see what would happen...gaming rarely sees the temperature go above 40c. That's crazy to me. Honestly for gaming it blows my old overclocked 2600K out of the water, which is something I didn't really expect.

    edit

just fucking idiots who are getting suboptimal performance with Ryzen, like this dickhead complaining about Destiny 2 getting shitty framerates despite the fact he's using slow memory. DICKHEADS.

At this point, if i upgrade the GPU in my main RIG to a 1080ti or 2080, and move the 980Ti into the family room PC, it will pretty much murder anything @ 1080p 60fps, which is all the TV and monitor can do anyway.

Would be nice to have a 4k telly and monitor one day. But that would make mean making my spare PC the main PC.

Prices are crazy for videocards right now, or at least the 1080ti is not exactly cheap with the card i bought for 650 going for 800-880 quid. like, why. that's rtx 2080 money. :/

That's fucking crazy. A mate at work picked up an 2080 from Overclockers for 699. It's a brand I've never heard of but it's absolutely decimating everything at 4k for an easy 80-100 fps.

There are still plenty of sub £650 (a quick look saw some £620 ones around) around, your brand may just be one that is still selling at the old inflated cryptoprices. Whether a 1080ti is worth it when you can get a 2080 for not much more is a fair question, but personally both cards are way put of my budget.

    Tempted next year...

I'd have to upgrade the telly and the kitchen PC monitor to a 4k one tho :-)

Looks like a Palit 2080 is £730 on oc at the mo. Good brand IMO

@THFourteen I'll be waiting another 2 years I think. Would only be running stuff at 1440p anyway as I'm properly in love with G-sync and 144hz. So until there's an affordable option of a 4k one with those options, I'm alright thanks.

Get him to try Ghost Recon: Wildlands for maximum disappointment and wtf. This tip also applies to other Ubisoft games too!
