@KnuttinAtoll I understand about the selfbuild vs convinence thing.

Where those things would make a difference is where you end up with a high spec CPU but the rest is gimped, you might as well save money haveing slower CPU.

The official listing on the Acer site doesn't state the RAM speed - its traditionally an easy place for pre-builds to save money becasue why not.

I'm sure if you get one you'll be happy with it.

@brokenkey I think the older I'm getting (and more disposable income) the more slack I am when it comes to making savings (or rather, not).

I just pulled the trigger on that model. Will pick it up tomorrow morning.

    Giddy like a fucking schoolboy!:D

It's my first desktop in I think over 10 years. Last one had a 8800GT which is the only thing I remember. Ever since made do with laptops but they're just too much of a compromise and aren't exactly cheap either.

@KnuttinAtoll I got your card and currently running triple monitors or vr nicely on a much weaker Ryzen 1600 cpu, 32gb ram and x470 board. Whatever I do below 1440p runs within freesync etc.

@KD excellent. VR isn't something I will look into right now - there's a weird resistance towards it in my mind both in terms of 1) being completely detached from the outside world, I fear I'd become even more antisocial in the house and 2) more tech gear in our apartment which is already full enough of stuff now.

But it's nice to have as an option.

Also, I'm keeping my monitor for now, which is an ageing 1080p one. I can't justify replacing it (even though the PC does deserve it) but I'll eventually aim for a decent 1440p one, that'll be a "soft" upgrade in itself when it happens.

    Very, very excited.

One thing that I'm dreading a bit is installing all the games again - ideally I'd prefer to transfer them from my laptop (most games are on Steam, Horizon 4 is on Windows Store), I suppose re-downloading is probably the only option? Can see my BB is going to get a right hammering over the coming days.

If you scroll down it doesn't say, just 9700. There are other boxes with a 9700F. Not sure if that means plain number = K. It sucks a little that it doesn't give you the 100% accurate details but I'll just make do. I'm sure it'll blow my mind after years of laptop gaming.

If you copy your steam library folder across then it should take it up - Iíve reinstalled a few times and itís been fine every time. You might need to start the game to get it to check for updates etc but itíll save the full download.

Donít try and be clever with Windows Store installs as youíll end up falling into a file permissions nightmare which can get bad enough to make you reinstall Windows.

Pretty sure you can transfer files via a USB drive. You might need to do a bit of prep first. Googling shows a few solutions but I've never done it so I'm not going to link
    anything here.

Thanks chaps - I do have an (not particularly fast, but USB 3.0) external drive (2TB), that might do the trick with Steam at least - only have a dozen or so games I will transfer anyways - GTA5 is the biggest one of those by far. Will have to transfer things twice I suppose but better than downloading I reckon.

Point taken re Windows Store - at least it's only 1 game (Horizon 4 - can't wait to see that in 60fps glory and high settings).

When I build my new pc I also transfered my secondary drive and Steam just found those games somehow. I was surprised that when I installed steam and went to my library a bunch of games lighted up white, those that were on that secondary disk.

Yeah you can say what you want about Steam, but it just works. Can't remember it ever letting me down apart from some DDoS attack years ago.

@KnuttinAtoll Probably the 'F' which means no integrated video. Don't think its overclockable either but that probably isn't something you care about. The 9700 is a good chip. Seems a balanced system and should last you. As mentioned, be careful about which VR headset you get as the higher the resolution the more your GPU will cry. Have fun!

Hmmm... if those supposedly leaked Ampere specs are genuine, I think I'm going to need a bigger PSU. :(

@MrWonderstuff Thanks! Yeah VR is only further down the line. I'm making do with a crappy monitor at the moment so that gets upgraded first. VR maybe in a year or two, I'm not too fussed about it as of now.

Transferring Steam games to my backup drive, then once I prepped the desktop (just picked it up:)) will move them over. Will be busy with this all day I reckon.

@Rogueywon What have you got? I did upgrade to an 850W Titanium one when I got my 3900X but that was more for the silent operation than running short on power.

@uiruki Just a 750W. Fine with a 2080Ti, but if the specs on that 3090 are to be believed...

@Rogueywon Yeah, at 350W things are getting tight, especially if you're looking at boosting your CPU. I've run PSUs at the limits and it's easy to get them to just lose power.

I tried running a 780Ti with a 550W supply (Silverstone Gold rated one, not some piece of junk) and I had to fiddle with my Intel 2600K to keep it happy when running a game, even at stock. Marvel Heroes of all things would cause it to just drop!

Ah well, I've just taken a poke around the back of my case to see how hard a PSU swap would be. Doesn't look too bad, actually. Can hopefully swap up to a 1000W quite easily.

No way am I swapping out my PSU. It was a drag getting it into the Meshify C and getting the cables looking smart. 750 should be ok, though, the 3600 sips power. Going big on GPU this time. The 3090 is going to be shit overall, I think, not because of perf, 350 is crazy power. Sounds like Fermi tbh.

As long as you don't need an SFX sized supply then you can get lots of power in there without too much bother. That said, Silverstone do make a 1000W SFX-L supply now!

I'm sure you're aware, but if you are changing it in an existing build, don't reuse the existing PSU's power cables. Different ones sometimes wire the modular cables differently which can have "entertaining" results.

If you haven't gotten a new PSU in a while you might be pretty surprised at how much more heat-efficient they've gotten; if you get a decent quality one they don't even run the fan anymore until you're putting a decent amount of power through it, even lighter gaming won't make it kick up. It does a great job of reducing the noise of your machine at the desktop.

Anyone know any atx cases that are 44cm tall max? The Rio Toro cr 1080 seems like the only one but itís a bit meh.

Does it have to be ATX? Fractals Meshify C mini is shorter but fits mATX boards.

Basically you want a case where the PSU in not under but next to the mobo, making the case wider. There's bunch here: https://www.technewstoday.com/smallest-atx-cases/

I have a Meshify Mini and it's the best case I've ever had.
