They look pretty good but they obviously take a pasting in ray tracing. The stock cooler is also pretty shit.

DF have a piece up. Skimming the conclusions, they seem pretty good in non-RT titles, albeit the benchmarks AMD chose for the launch definitely flattered their own cards. RT performance looks like it lags quite seriously.

Heh, I intentionally left OCUK off the list of tabs that I cycled through. Fuck them!

I'll give it another go on the 25th and if not leave it until next year.

6800xt seems ok but falls behind at 4k, which is all i'm interested in. think i will wait for 3090 fe or if there's a 3080ti next year.

Prices are shit but I'm tempted to pick up a 3080 from CCL... They seem to have a good few in stock for delivery.
    https://www.cclonline.com/search/?q=3080

I just know I'll regret spunking that much when the 3080ti comes out.

    /edit
Ignore that, can't buy them anyway.

Oh goody... the parents just phoned and mentioned that their old laptop is starting to fail and asked if I would mind "just taking a quick look online for a replacement".

Guess that fucks up my next few weeks pretty comprehensively.

??? why - get one sent to your house. Get it set up exactly as their current one and then leave it outside their door.

@Graxlar_v3 No, no, no. I'll send them a couple of options in an e-mail later. They'll then decide they don't like them, for reasons like "the corners are a funny shape" or "it's the wrong shade of silver and won't match our new sofa".

When they do eventually pick one, which will inevitably be both lower specced and more expensive than my recommendation, I will then get calls every 15 minutes asking why the camera's not very good, or whether I have a free copy of MS Office they could have.

Then my dad will find a novel way to break something and get it locked into some kind of infinite-boot loop. I will need to do tech support over the phone, hindered by the fact that he won't tell me what an error message actually says, rather he will tell me what he wants it to say (yes, he voted Leave). Eventually, I will get him to put my mum on, who will tell me what the fucking message actually says, but will be completely unable to follow any of the instructions I give.

I've been around this cycle 3-4 times before.

In May the M-I-Ls laptop died and she asked for me to do the same. I asked her for a budget and all her passwords, bought it, configured it and sent it on to her house. Took about 48 hours.

All she needed to do was hook it up to the wifi.

I have been doing similar with my mum for the past two decades except it's with iPads and iPhones.

"Do I need to get an iPhone 12? They look nice"

"No mum, you can barely get a signal where you live and you only use it for calls."

    Few days later...

"I've bought an iPhone 12. I got a great deal for 4 zillion per month with unlimited calls and 5GB data!"

    Few days later...

    "My phone internet doesn't work."

    Few months later...

"I don't like my iPhone 12 so I've gone back to my old one."

    Few years later...

"Shall I get an iPhone 14, they look really great!"

Also available on android phones, which is helpful when youre trying to talk someone through changing an alert tone for texts as all the noises sound the same.

Yeah, I tried TeamViewer. The snapping point for me was when my dad asked me to pop on to see if I could figure out why their internet was down.

    Their internet was down.

I think your Dad is possibly my Dad's lost twin.

Does yours like cross dressing and riding penny farthings?

@dfunked09 OCUK have plenty of 6800 going live tomorrow. They aren't getting anymore FE 6800XTs.

I'm still stubbornly sticking to my 3080 order.... last I heard about position 500 in the queue, woo! From around 800 at launch...

Honestly I think they're more likely to just discontinue the whole line and not make any more, focus on a 3080ti or whatever, than actually fulfil the order... but then, they've all shot up about 150 each anyway, so might as well just see what happens now.

They will more than likely ditched Samsung in the new year and go 7mm node. I would not be surprised to see a delay on the 3080ti as 3080 is still king of gaming performance especially at 4K.

I was convinced I was going to get an AMD card after missing out on a 3070 or 3080. Thanks to whoever it was on here that suggested Telegram, I picked up a 3070 FE yesterday from Scan (delivered this afternoon).

For anyone else trying for the FE (or unwilling to pay through the nose at custom prices) it's good to see that they are still coming through even if it is in small quantities. The cynic in me thought there wouldn't be any after the first week, considering how the FE price is fixed at RRP.

As someone else said, keep an eye on the Nvidia site around 2pm - about 6 Nvidia site in Europe dropped 3080 and 3070s between 2pm - 3pm (in various EU countries). UK dropped shortly after all the rest. At RRP I think the FE cards do represent good price/perf even they do have gimped amounts of memory.

The initial AMD launch seemed to be over quicker than the Nvidia one.

I see OCUK are doing refunds for 6800 / 6800XTs rather than a queue system.

@captbirdseye thanks for the advice - I'd say that's the best route at the moment (worked better than discord). Quite a good chat function for each deal too, good camaraderie 😀. I actually felt like I was playing a multiplayer lootbox opening game ! 650,pass. 600, pass. 550, hmmm ? Pass. All I needed was Noel Edmonds involved.

I'm finding it hard to stop looking even though I now have a card hehe.

On a separate note, am I reading correctly that AMD are basically ditching the reference model and only using AIBs going foreward? OCUK seem to be hinting it.

Cheers mate. I'd rather not help finance another Ferrari if I can avoid it though!

Signed up for telegram and will keep an eye out for a 3080 as that's still looking like the best overall fit for me, as much as I fancied mixing it up by switching sides.

IIRC over the years I've gone with NVIDIA > AMD > AMD > NVIDIA > AMD (6950) > AMD (280), then just went all in on NVIDIA since the 1070 came out with some random sidegrades and upgrades when the mood suited.

@dfunked09 So far France and Germany dropped this week which usually means the UK follow a few days after. If you can, us PayPal on Scan as you avoid going through their payment system which slows things down. Never use Amazon Pay as for some reason it messes up Scan. Finally, get your Captcha skills up to top spec lol.

I don't think ever clicked so many boats in the last three months hehe.

@dfunked09 I assume you have the Telegram link that captain provided earlier: https://t.me/joinchat/AAAAAFciuCdyIDkBORJRFQm.

Only sharing it again as I couldn't find my way to it by googling for some reason.

@captbirdseye Multiple retailers today seem to be reporting that the initial shipment of reference cards is all that will be coming. Hence OCUK doing refunds, not a queue.

@Rogueywon it's a strange one as they talk about no more stock for the XT version. The 6800 still seems to be coming through.

That's a bit pants - wonder how pricey the custom cards are going to be ? Compared to the Nvidia release, there was a lot less 'visibility' of any AMD cards before 2pm. It was like, what new GPU card release ?
