Just ordered my CPU, £280 and delivered tomorrow for a fiver more.
MSI released the firmware update for my X470 in late December and this appeared in stock at RRP just in time, will get the right speed ram next month as my 1600x got matched with 32gb of 3000mhz speed when I bought it.

    Nice!

Been keeping an eye on GPU prices for a laugh and the 3080 is still through the roof in the UK assuming you can even get one.

I could've had a couple now but I'll be fucked if I'm paying ebuyers scalping prices. Asus tuf is an extra £100 more than Curry's for example.

I also do not think an Aorus extreme is worth 930

Got the cpu working on my mb, cant overclock or set the bios setting gaming mode but its beta firmware so wont complain. Have technically downgraded .1Ghz for now but can see improvements in everything.

Apart from maybe a ram upgrade and bigger SSD's I think I'm done with this pc, roll on AM5 socket and whatever that brings for a new build.

So, maybe forget everything I said previously as I've now bought a MSI suprim X 3080.

    Now I'm excited

    Nice. How much?

I went through so many changes of mind before I finally snagged one I was happy with.

Don't think of the money just sit back and enjoy it.

GPUs will remain hard to get and High price all year.

I decided to upgrade my venerable GTX970-based machine last year, and went for a 3080/i9 10850k based build. I fancied returning to flight sims, and running FS2020 smoothly was an aim.

Performance is excellent, but the noise from the Zotac Trinity 3080 was crazy loud compared to what I was used to. In addition, the heat was quite something. I expected to get a standard card, but I was supplied with the 3080 overclocked version.

So, having only previously done small bits of PC upgrading (I got this system built for me for access to the card and simplicity) I decided the solution was to go down the full custom water loop route. As you do. Pulling apart the 3080 was somewhat anxiety inducing, but the whole process worked out fine.

Now, it's lovely and quiet. Of course, I had to buy the glass side panel for my Fractal case to show off all my work. :D

@MikeP Nice one...not sure I would have the guts to do that but am impressed nevertheless.

    @MikeP

You can use most GPU software to create your own fan curve and make it quieter.

    Cheaper as well

@bone-on Tried that on the aircooling and I got it down from "totally unbearable" and into "really irritating" but I'm with you that for some cards that's a good approach.

Especially as you seem to be able to apply pretty meaningful undervolting to the 3080 cards to reduce the power draw and heat without much of a performance hit. I dropped the power requirement under test by 50-60 watts for only a 2-3% performance hit, as far as I could see.

Just accept you need 6 months after the date, good for those still on 970's etc.
  • Deleted user 12 January 2021 21:26:29
So its a bit cheaper than the 3060ti with 4gb more ram but it has less cores and bandwidth?

Think its to compete with AMD on ram count and price cut.

I'm actually hoping the RTX 3050's get announced, if they make a low profile one of those I'm preordering.

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOH... Ampere for laptops announced.

My old iPad Air 2 is dying. Its battery life can be anywhere between 30 minutes and 3 hours, depending on what kind of mood it's in. It generally chugs and is barely usable. I'm getting a bit sick of the Apple ecosystem. I've had a small financial windfall this month, which I'd been planning to use to replace it.

I've been debating whether to replace it with one of the new iPad Pros, expected in March, or a decently-specced laptop. I'd been deterred from the latter by the fact that the best GPUs around were still 2000-series. But if I can get an Ampere laptop... maybe with a 3070 equivalent... that would do quite nicely.

ok, so I'm not wanting to build a gaming PC but this thread is pretty active.

Just how cheaply could you build a PC?. It's been on my mind for ages but my laptop died today so now I'm looking at my options.

Would it be a mistake to pick up some older dirt cheap parts on ebay and put something together?. Is it better value to pick up a cheap Dell Vostro or similar?.

Any recommendations for an older CPU and motherboard to look for?. The only parts that I have that could be of use is a 2.5" hd, mouse and keyboard. I'd need everything else, including OS but I could probably make do with Linux for the time being.

and by cheap I mean like, less than £100 all in.

So reference 3000 models have been removed from the Nvidia website. I wonder what's going on.

You will /really/ struggle to do it with less than 100 quid. For instance, I looked up the price of my 5 year old CPU recently and they are still going for £60+.

It's kinda an interesting challenge to see what you could get for 100 notes. It might play last gen games at 1080p, but would be compromised.

A friend bought a pre-build recently for about 350 quid. Came with one of those AMD CPUs with the onboard Vega GPU. He plays Witcher 3 happily on it, albeit he's not really a gamer so I've no idea what settings he runs. My point is, 300 quid is really entry level nowadays. 100 quid... gotta get your David Dickinson on.

Edit... Just realised you weren't interested in gaming. You could maybe just try getting an old 4xxx series Intel CPU or something and a motherboard. Maybe 50 quid for those?! Pick up some filthy old RAM for a tenner maybe? Stick in a tiny hard drive and a PSU powered by a hamster and you'll be just about there.

But tbh... The performance will be so ropey compared to the budget parts you could get now for 300 quid. If you can get to that.

If Nvidia could sell more 3000 series cards, they would. All the early talk about flawed capacitors and the like turned out to be largely shite. The cards are fine and people are desperate to buy them.

The problem is shortages of raw materials in the supply chain and global shipping problems.

Edit: Also, Nvidia do tend to retire the FE cards early anyway. Nothing to see here, move along.

    @Tomo Thank you.

Yeah, I'm not expecting great things, I was just kind of wondering whether it's even worth considering. I haven't owned a desktop in the past 15 years and I've never really been clued up on PC hardware specs.

I don't need it for games but it'd be a bonus of it could run smaller indie titles (Into the Breach), the majority of my gaming would be on PS4/5.

It'd be replacing a 10yr old Dell laptop (Core2Duo P8600, Radeon HD4570). My main PC at the moment is a Raspberry Pi 3. :) . Surely, that's quite a low benchmark to improve upon.

Well, Nvidia didn't retire Turing FE early. Thinking about it now I never heard about FE cards being retired early tbh.

If they’ve been withdrawn I’d love to know how long they’ve actually been available, cumulatively, since they were put on sale. Must be less than 1 minute? I’ve given up now and will just wait for new cards.
