Registered 12 years agoanother question for my pc friends. I'm a big fan of this ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q 1440p monitor. It's served me very well.
IF (and I mean if!), I do bite the bullet and just get a 3090 because I'm impatient, I'd have to upgrade my monitor to 4k. Which is the best 4k monitor these days? -

Registered 16 years ago@Gregolution Ugh, tough one. I'm not happy with my current 4k monitor, to be honest. I can live with its 60hz limit, but its HDR is pants. 4k, high refresh and decent HDR, taken together, add up to a formidable purchase price. -

Registered 13 years agoHi I have a fx4300 1050ti 8gb ram and Ssd
I take it my best bet for an upgrade would be a new CPU ram and mono .
I could get a FX 8350 but by the looks of it that is a pointless upgrade -

Registered 16 years ago4k monitors are just not worth it at the moment. The price vs performance is pretty rubbish unless you will use it for a TV like the LG 48 OLED. I think we are at least still a few years away from decent 4K monitors. Also, monitor tech has been pretty shitty for a good few years now especially in terms of the all the problems with ghosting and light bleed. -
Is 4k the best though? I think I'd rather have an ultrawide for my next monitor -

Registered 16 years ago@crashVoodoo After 4k, I can't go back to anything else. And I just don't like ultrawides... the dimensions feel all wrong to me. The only things worse than ultrawides are those bloody curved monstrosities. -

Registered 14 years agoUltrawide is amazing, shame that many old games don't support it (but then again, many do). The extra real estate in Destiny 2 makes a big difference. I went back to regular widescreen on Xbox and it felt so cramped, even with a fov increase. -

I've had one for a few years now and pretty much all new games have ultrawide support. Even smaller indie ones are pretty good for it nowadays.
Personally, rather have ultrawide (~2k resolution) at high refresh rates, with all the fancy effects on rather than 4K @ 60fps, which is still not easy to achieve. -
Seems to be quite a bit of support nowadays. Definately getting an UW later this year. I have Asus 27 inch gsync thing and a second 1440p dell for work. I'm going to replace them both with a single unit.
Brother in law just got an AOC and have to admit it looks great -

Well the the stupid expensive option is the Asus pg35vq.

Things I considered:
- Budget: I was willing to stretch depending on my research, but obviously you will get better features with more pennies
- General Purpose: gaming and photography editing for me, so I wanted decent colour fidelity, which was a factor in choosing the Samsung over some of the mainstream gaming brands (Acer/Asus etc.)
- Gaming Purpose: do you care for high refresh rate? ie: >60Hz? I really value it, especially as I play a lot of first person shooters. But it makes for a generally nicer experience anyway. Bear in mind it depends what GPU you have pushing out your pixels. Resolution... I'd say 3440x1440 is a lovely resolution for 34" ultrawide. Some monitors are cheaper because they are effectively 1080p ultrawide rather than 2K ultrawide. Personally I would avoid those.
- HDR? I've no experience here, but something to consider possibly.
- Freesync/G-Sync: these help with screen tearing and graphical smoothness when your GPU isn't powerful enough to reach your refresh rate. You can expect to pay another £100+ for G-Sync. My monitor has Freesync and now it's compatible with my Nvidia card. It works, but I'm not convinced it's a holy grail like some believe. Also could be that it's not as effective as G-Sync.
- Looks: My Samsung is pretty slick looking. Makes me feel like I'm in my flat rather than a gaming cafe. Some of the gaming ultrawides look really horrible, which was enough to put me off despite some great specs.
34" Acer Predator monitor was the other one I really considered, but at the time it was another 200 quid, which I couldn't stretch to.
You can also get obscene 49" Ultrawides (Odyssey G9) now which look amazing, if you have the desk... But they also seem a bit impractical because you literally have to rotate your neck to go from one end to the other.

Registered 16 years agoYou lot have just triggered me to go looking for monitors myself. I'm really not happy with my current BenQ EW3270U, as the HDR is crap. Came very close to going for an Acer Predator CG7, but the size is just too large. I'd like a 32" monitor with a similar feature-set, but... cant find one.
I think I'm going to wait. As was posted above, monitor tech seems to be moving forwards at a glacial pace. -

Registered 16 years agoThe vast majority of games support ultrawide, its the rare big games like Overwatch that do it badly but I wouldn't go back.
I liked it so much I bought 3 27in monitors to use for sim racing after trying it in vr. -

Yeah I have the same monitor and as you say, the HDR is crap. I stuck it in the attic and bought a TV instead. Nothing super fancy like an LG OLED because OLED for PC doesn't make any sense (to me) but even so the HDR is on another level compared to the BenQ.

I've been patiently waiting to build a sim racing rig for years now but there is simply no room in our small London flat. However, we're moving house in a couple of months and I'll finally have an office (man cave) about 2x3.5m. I can't decide whether to go for ultrawide, 3x27" or VR, as all seem to have pros and cons.
VR would be most space-efficient, and I know from my PSVR that it can be incredibly immersive, however it's also expensive seeing as I'll still need at least one monitor. I'm also not 100% convinced the tech is quite 'there' yet in terms of image quality and comfort, and worry this could put me off longer races. -

I was looking at 21:9 HDR monitors with high framerate and if you want those 3 things you’re looking at oled levels of cost anyway. -

Registered 16 years ago@muddyyfunster I got a cheap Dell Visor from before the pandemic for £170 and happy with it, every week or 2 I get a few league races in on iracing with it and put it away again. For the other 10-50 races I may have that week I'm back on my triples being more consistent and with less headaches and sweaty face, just need that fov to make the difference.
I'll find another thread if you want the sim rig breakdown. -

Registered 16 years agoJust splurged on a G9 myself actually. Gotta keep the economy going right.
So far it’s been bloody fantastic, especially for work tbh as I can legitimately have 3 things open at the same time and the split screen modes are fantastic for running Citrix and discord side by side.
Games look great, Altho the HDR is lacking tbh but I knew that when I bought it. Destiny 2 particularly centres the HUD so you don’t have to turn your head to see the mini map etc.
