Cheap Windows 10 keys for new build - always too dodgy or are they legit sometimes? Scan OEM version is about 92 quid, gray market sellers as cheap as a tenner. Fully expect the 10 quid option to be bent, but anything in the middle?

Hmmm, just had a look but can't find anything that cheap. Some around the 25 quid mark, same on completed listings.

@captbirdseye Quite a few reviews suggest these are volume licences, that stop working after a period of time without reactivation.

Bought the final 3 pieces for my pc upgrade:
    Txm 750w psu
    Gigabyte aorus elite v2
    Amd 5600x.
Already had a rtx 3060 but Iím replacing a b350 plus motherboard and amd 1500x so Iím hoping for a decent performance boost. Just dreading fitting it all as itís been years since my last.

If you play racing games you'll see a big improvement bump with that CPU upgrade.

Personally I found building a pc in 2021 much easier than it was 15 years ago when I'd last done one. You'll be fine.

Contemplating taking advantage of the market and selling my 3080 and getting a series x. I'm just not putting the pc to good use at the moment. I've use the ps5 and switch far more at the moment just out of convenience. The pc is in my man cave, which means barely spending any time with the Mrs.

So my question is, is this draught of card availability likely to go on for another year and beyond? I think I could do without a card for a while due to the games that are on ps5 and games Pass. But there's a real comforting feeling from going in there and playing some games on the pc.

It's highly unlikely the drought will end this year espeically with the current Covid situation in keys areas in China. If you aren't using it it would stupid not to take advantage of the situation because you could probably buy two Series X.

If you let that 3080 mine bitcoin for 100 days youíll have enough to buy a series x. When it was at itís highest I was getting about Ä10/day.

Nope, but the 3080 consumes about 230 watts when mining, itís not going to impact the numbers that much.

Aren't the returns on mining pretty mediocre at the moment? I keep seeing mining rigs for sale all over the place.

Didn't think of that. Might give it a go for a week and see what the crack is. Haven't got the foggiest where to start but I'm sure YouTube is full of tutorials.

Nicehash is by far the easiest to get started with. Pretty much download and run is all there is to it. Tempted to get stuck into it again myself, but my office is already far too bloody hot and my 3080 is a noisy bastard at full pelt.

Also have a 1080ti that I could in theory chuck in my case to create my own sauna... 750w is probably cutting it a bit fine though.

PCIE lanes question on a new build...

Choice between having 2 M.2 SSDs running on PCIE 4.0 off the CPU and leaving the GPU with 8 lanes, or give the GPU the full 16 lanes and have one of the M.2s run on PCIE 3.0 from the motherboard. Which is best for gaming?

    Z590-F mobo, 11900k, 3080, SN850, Rocket 4 Plus

    @dfunked09

I had nice hash installed but my vrm temps on my 3080 were hitting 90 degrees plus even with undervolting and I wasnít happy with that.

Will console myself with the fact I paid 660 for a gpu.

I had two 3090s here for a while this afternoon!

Took delivery for a friend who lives local and ordered one, but had to be in the office today so he had it sent to me. He picked it up after work.

    @RaymondLuxuryYacht
PCIe 4.0 NVMe is massive overkill for gaming right now, but I guess will become more useful when this direct X direct access stuff comes out.

Then again modern GPUs are barely hampered by PCIe 3.0 x16, so not a huge loss to run the GPU at that or 4.0 x8.

I'd probably lean towards playing it safe and getting a smaller PCIe 3.0 boot drive and a bigger PCIe 4.0 stuff drive, but that's just me.

@dfunked09 Thanks! Penny only just dropped that 4.0 x8 is more or less the same as 3.0 16x, but if worth looking ahead to direct access then I'll keep the GPU at 16x 4.0.

After that "dead PC" scare last month, I went into one of those drawn out shopping sprees where you drift into buying more and more components over a month or so. Just realised that with the only parts still remaining from a month ago being the GPU and storage drives, I've basically done my first self-build in around 15 years!

Slightly boring question... my gf's using my trusty old 3440x1440 screen, but her work laptop only seems to recognise it through the hdmi mhl slot. Which is only hdmi 1.4, so only at 30hz.

I think her laptop has a hdmi 2.0 port, so it should be fine... doesn't even register though through the monitors hdmi 2.0 though. I bought a display port 1.4 to hdmi 2.0 cable, thought that would do the trick, but again... nothing. Annoying.

Can't find anything about it online. Any ideas?

@OnlyJoeKing Had a similar issue. The cable I bought was the DP to hdmi. I assumed they worked both ways but apparently not. Changed it to hdmi to DP and worked fine.

Yeah HDMI out to DP in isn't possible without an expensive adapter. Something to do with HDMI not putting the timings that DP needs in the signal so you need something to sit in between to inject them.

Other way around is absolutely fine with a basic cable though. DP to HDMI works perfectly for 1440p/120hz on my monitor.

She's only doing work on it though, so what's the issue with 30hz?

edit: google says hdmi 1.4 should support 60hz at that resolution.
