@THFourteen No. My PC troubles ended up costing me quite a lot of money, as I ended up doing pretty much a full system rebuild, replacing everything bar the 3090. The cost came out... high. Not quite on the level of a PG32UQx, but not a million miles off either. I'm also looking at needing to redecorate my home in the next few months, so no new monitor for me this year. |

Registered 2 years agoI've gone for a Ryzen 7 5800x on a MSI X570 Ace board.
Corsair DDR4 vengeance pro 32gb from 16gb
Noctua NH-D15 cooler instead of the kraken x72.
Everything arrived today apart from the CPU so I've got to wait to build it. -

Registered 11 years agoFinally, a pc monitor that can do proper HDR. Pity it costs more than a second hand car. My guess is it'll be three years before the tech is a sensible price.

Registered 12 years agoI’ve got the 3080 version of that. Never seen it go above 67°C. And it has a tiny screen that displays info on top of a gif if you are so inclined. Not my first choice. -

Registered 16 years agoPrices seem to have dipped a bit since the launch of the 3080Ti. Even though those were sold out pretty much immediately, the dumping of a big load of stock onto the market on launch day probably reduced demand a bit. -
@uiruki Amazon had those earlier for £1,680.23 so definitely dropping a bit now. -

Registered 16 years agoFinally got round to setting up a proper streaming setup from my office PC. Got wake on lan working finally so the PC can be woken up from shut down with moonlight or steam link.
Main issue so far is the fire stick 4k i'm using doesnt support 1080p120hz which is annoying. I don't have a 4k tv or projector but was hoping it could do that res.

Registered 13 years agoI've seen a 3060 on Currys for £450, 3070 and 3070 ti for £825 and £880 respectively on Amazon. I would happily buy one of the latter for the price of the former. -

Yeah, you'd be surprised how much cruft there is at the start of games where nothing happens. The Cold Steel games on PC (at least the first couple) had a startup option which made it automatically load into the last save game with no intro at all and you'd click Play on Steam and be playing in maybe 2 seconds.

Registered 1 year agoYeah, the Borderlands series has always been especially awful for it. That's the beauty of PC gaming though, someone always figures out a launch argument, INI file edit or just good old deleting/replacing files to get around stupid "unskippable" splash screens and intro videos.
Playing Yakuza LAD at the moment on my SX and quick resume is definitely a game changer though. Something I'll definitely miss next time I load up a game on PC. -

1000% this. I would not have completed this game on PC. So many times i left it to go to bed halfway through a 30 minute battle or 60minute cutscene.

Registered 12 years agoI think some of the direct storage access things are coming to Windows too.
https://devblogs.microsoft.com/directx/directstorage-is-coming-to-pc/
Requires NVMe drive though.
Edit: And Windows 11

Registered 1 year agoWindows 11 as a pre-req is a bit annoying... I've been testing the preview build on my laptop and have been toying with the idea of just giving it a miss on my main PC unless they sort out the sluggish feeling menus. -

Registered 12 years agoYup, was planning to put off the upgrade as long as possible, but this would push me over the edge. Will be a while before any games make use of it though. -
Intrigued to see the difference though, games load mega fast on my nvme as it is -

Registered 13 years agoA phone shop (more of a random bits and bobs of tech shop really) near my work has an RTX 3060 in the window, finally got the chance to pop in and get a price.
"That is £700 my friend!"
Haha, no.
Mind you, CEX opposite currently have a GTX 1060 for the low low price of £280. A second hand 1060 for what should be roughly the price of an RTX 3060. Clucking bell. -

Registered 16 years agoThe RRP for the 3090 is £1,400. Your chances of getting one at that price through normal channels are very low, barring getting lucky on an Nvidia stock drop. Guessing your work has a different procurement channel that lets it buy at RRP. -

Registered 18 years agoGiven up, spotted an EVGA 3080 FTW3 for 1000 at Scan so I've gone with it. That's about 150 more than it would be if I waited for my turn on the EVGA website and since a work bonus is paying for it I think that'll do me for the next couple of years at least. The price difference with the Ti and 3090 are a bit too much for now.
Also picked up a Samsung T7 external drive, they come with a code for RE8 so I get that and the ability to move a 2tb SSD I've been using as external storage into my main machine. -

Holy shit... if the articles on that are correct... just holy shit. I honestly thought New World couldn't be more of a disaster at this point, though surely some of the blame has to go to Nvidia if their drivers allow this to happen.

Yeah, I've taken my 3090 (and plenty of other cards over the years) to sustained full load in both games and stress-tests. There does seem to be something actually going on with New Worlds, particularly with EVGA 3090s, but it can't just be full load. Possibly it's doing something with fluctuating power levels?

Yeah, I thought power levels would be issue here and it sounds more like an Nvidia issue than New Worlds. I am glad I didn't get a key now lol.
