I can see an emergency Nvidia driver update coming very soon.

All installed, I should have done this much earlier. Control's 80-90fps maxed out with quality DLSS in the quick fight I did, Nioh 2 hits 120 easily.

EVGA have put out a statement that they're investigating the New Worlds issue. There are reports of Gigabyte cards bricking as well (and also possibly of EVGA 3080s). It does seem to be mostly the EVGAs affected, but I sure as hell won't be firing this up myself any time soon.

My PC is in my garden office which is 30C+ at the moment. Not that I feel like gaming much in this weather but I'm almost a bit scared to turn it on. Can't afford to melt the 3080 right now.

@muddyyfunster If everything's working ok, normal automatic throttling should mean you won't cook your card playing while it's a bit on the hot side in the room (though the heat from the card may make your room even more uncomfortable).

What's happening with New Worlds almost certainly isn't a simple overheat. You can stress-test a GPU at full capacity pretty easily and it shouldn't brick the card unless something's very badly wrong. Reports now indicate that cards which aren't bricking in New Worlds are still seeing some pretty extreme power-spikes. Best guess at the moment is that the game's doing something unusual with power level fluctuations.

No idea if it's connected or not, but some brands of 3080 and 3090 - including EVGA and Gigabyte - had (non-bricking) stability problems at launch under certain power-draw conditions. This was fixed via an Nvidia driver update, but I'm wondering if there's a more serious variation on the same problem at play here.

My 3080fe seems to hover about the normal temperature tbh. Which is pretty hot, but not too bad. Quite surprised really, my case is not exactly great, I've just got a big watercooler on the front for the cpu and, er, one fan at the back. The room doesn't quite hit 30C though.

Probably helps that it has a kind of hybrid blower design.

A very good point, from what I've heard. It's certainly had a cursed development cycle.

I watched a stream and it looked insanely dated. Like Assassin's Creed did a sex with Everquest and farted out something better aborted.

Come on Roguey, test it out for us.
    It'll be fine.

Doesn't take much to brick a gigabyte card, they are fucking awful which is a surprise as their motherboards are generally pretty decent.

My last motherboard was a Gigabyte and it was not good.

Been playing a bit with voltage curves and it’s good gains for not much work. Reduced power draw by 60 watts in Quake 2 RTX while keeping the same clock rate simply because the chip was running cooler and also not hitting the board power limit.

@Rogueywon used hundreds of them in builds and they have had excellent reliability, I wouldn't touch one of the gpus though.

I had no idea, my Gigabyte gtx 1080 is 5 years old now. That said, the cooler broke after 2 years (just inside warranty) and I installed a water cooler, so yeah.

My Aorus been fine so far, I didn't have a clue about the reputation tbh.

What do you do for a job Frog?

I've had a couple of Gigabyte Mobos which have lasted many years. Anecdotal evidence ofc.

@Frogofdoom Dunno about you but my X570 Aorus Pro motherboard has behaved really well since I did my build in March of last year. In fact I really like Gigabyte stuff (my Windforce 2070s is great card and never goes above 65-70 degrees). Thing is for everyone who has shit experience there are many more with good experiences - they are just quieter about it ;-)

@THFourteen got 2 jobs, 1 as a delivery driver the other is as a consultant to a system builder. My main job of the last 20 years has been as a system builder and have built thousands of pc's and servers ranging from 500 quid boxes up to 100 grand. Unfortunately the way the hardware market has gone it has forced the smaller builder to struggle under the weight of HP and Dell.

I’m in the “replacing one part slowly leads to a Ship of Thesus” rabbit hole. My CPU fan was dying, so bought a nice new Noctua which works fantastically, barely reaches 60 under full load, buuut despite all the specs saying it will, it sticks out of the case so I can’t get the side back on. So new case ordered as it’s less hassle than returning and buying a new one etc etc, but now I’m also bracing that some random other component won’t fit and I’ll basically just end up swapping the entire thing out part by part.

    "Trigger's broom" is also acceptable.

I had a quick play around with undervolting my 3080 and holy shit, it's the ultimate why the fuck didn't I do this sooner. Haven't even touched fan curves and the like but it's like I'm playing with a similarity specced but completely different GPU. No noticeable loss in FPS in Destiny 2 but the noise and heat levels were just night and day.

    Greetings, my dudes.

I've decided that it's really truly time to upgrade my GPU, though I'm going to stick with something relatively low-power such as the upcoming RX6600 XT. The old leaked price of $399 seemed high, but now they say it should be $349 instead, which is more up my alley.

Of course, the important thing is actually finding it for that price, the GPU market being what it is. But I see a lot of people here with new graphics cards, and I'm going to assume that you didn't pay scalpers prices for them, so... what's your secret? If I could nab one at launch, that would be great.

The market has kind of settled a bit but the retail price is still all over place. However, I did notice price reductions on the mid tier cards such as the 3060. I think you'll be ok finding a 6600XT
