ADSL Question - I'm a stupid ming mong

I've made rather stupid mistake, I decided to purchase a router, now I just assumed since it was a broadband router that it would feature all that was necessary in that box to connect.

The router is a SMC7004VBR V.2 UK, I thought I'd be able to connect it up using the current cable that goes to the broadband modem but sadly not and the modem is a piece of shit and doesn't provide me with a RJ45 socket.

It looks like, from the Pipex website, that it could work directly but it needs a PPoPa and the SMC only has PPoPe (along with others).

    Here are Pipex's advanced settings.

    Connection Settings
    Dialup Number Enter 0,38 (zero,38)
    Primary DNS 158.43.240.4
    Secondary DNS 158.43.240.3
    VPI (Virtual Path Identifier) 0
    VCI (Virtual Circuit Identifier) 38
    Framing VC/MUX
    Mode ITU G.dmt
    Protocol PPPoA
IP Address Supplied by DHCP server
    Host Not Required
    Connection Username user@realm.pipex.net
where user is your PIPEX Xtreme username and realm is dsl, xtreme or xtreme2

So, any advice? Any easy solution. Do you need to know more?

Perhaps I'm being a stupid ming mong here, but how do you expect to connect to broadband without a modem?

Some routers/hubs have them inside them. Mine does.

It's my turn to be stupid now, but Mr Sleep mentions that he does have a modem already, no?

Aye and I'd assumed this one does, it appears that I can't get hold of a simple ADSL modem that doesn't require an USB connection. I'm not sure if there is something simple I'm missing.

If I was in the mood, I'd get offended on behalf of both the Chinese and the disabled, but I won't, as I'm neither.

Heh, I guess insults are a personal thing...

Aye but I can't connect from that since it doesn't feature the necessary socket to connect the router to it.

Buy a Draytek 2600v and have done with it! This already has QOS for VOIP too. The 2600g & 2600+ are also due for QOS soon.

(The 2600's are ADSL and the 2900 are ethernet; which is something I know even less about!)

what sort of modem do you have? usb standard pipex one (thompson i think?)

are you sure it isnt RJ11 it doenst have insetad of rj45?

    how many newtwork ports?

can you use internet connection sharing on the pc to go:

phone/adsl -> usb modem -> pc -> router (via network card in pc) -> devices plugged into network ports on router (pc/xbox etc)

and use it essentially as a switch/hub

but id recomend sending it back and hoping for a refund

i recommend getting a netgear 854G adsl modem router wireless all in one jobby

ADSL routers have an ADSL modem in them.

BROADBAND routers just have a RJ45 connection - you can then plug a compatible Cable or ADSL modem into it (but most ADSL modems are USB).

Yeah, but one that won't work with is router - so in effect he's trying to connect to the ISP without a modem.

Agreed, distance selling regs and all that jazz.

    Where'd you buy it from?

The alternative is buying an ADSL modem with RJ45 connection - but expect to pay at least another £20 and have another box lying around.

I like to refer to it as piece of shit.

are you sure it isnt RJ11 it doenst have insetad of rj45?
    One port for the RJ11.

cat wour use internet connection sharing on the pc to go:

phone/adsl -> usb modem -> pc -> router (via network card in pc) -> devices plugged into network ports on router (pc/xbox etc)

ans use it essentially as a switch/hub
Kind of defies the point of what I was trying to do really. Thanks though.

Don't mind me I was just trying to see what it was like to be indignant, but seeing as you ask ;)

Ming - a well known Chinese dynasty, subverted into that notorious evil figure 'Ming the Merciless'

Mong - a well known slang insult comparing someone who has done something stupid to those suffering from Down's Syndrome (as indeed you just did to yourself). Comes from the apparent facial likeness that sufferers have to the Mongolian people. In fact that could be construed as a racial slur against the Mongolians by comparing them to the disabled.

    Don't worry, I'm just in a funny mood ;)

I got it from Komplett. I'll look into their returns policy.

Where would one get an ADSL modem with RJ45 support which also doesn't require a USB connection, I can't find any online this morning. I don't want to have to switch on one computer to use another computer that would also defy the point.

    /pimps broadbandbuyer.com

Also, from what others have told me, you should be able to return it under the distance selling regs, no matter what. You may have to fork out for postage though.

    edit: /shakes fist as ssuellid

I've also got the DG834G - top unit, just make sure you upgrade the firmware to ensure stability.

From experience I would avoid Belkin. I went for Dynamode in the end and its been faultless - not sure if anyone else on the planet uses them tho.
  • Deleted user 11 January 2005 13:13:33
They have accepted an RMA so there is some hope anyway. I'll see where it leads me. Komplett seem like quite a good company for this kind of thing.
