Well... I ordered one last night, along with a 20" cinema display. 1.42ghz G4, 80gb HD, 1gb RAM, 8x superdrive, bluetooth & airport... Should be slightly snappier than my powerbook. We needed a second machine and it'll tide us over for another couple of years, then it'll be time to get a proper G5 tower. :)

Photos when it arrives (should be around a month from now).

They said they'd ship the display separately so I should get that a bit sooner.

Well now. It said so in the very Anandtech review that otto linked to. So I suppose he read it. Didn't you, otto?
Yeah I did read that, and I thought about it long and hard, but a slightly choppy Exposé is worth a $2,500 saving frankly. I'm also a little concerned at how it will cope with Tiger with the whole GUI being run from video memory, but again, the screen is a long term investment. I'll have it for a good six or seven years, or longer, I hope, and within a couple of years I'll be getting a monster tower.

I'll be using the Powerbook on it frequently, but I don't expect it to perform any better than the Mini. It has the same video memory (32mb) and a slower processor and less RAM. :'(

The Mini only has one socket though, I believe, so when you're costing options remember that if you buy from Crucial you're replacing the DIMM that came installed. I thought 'fuck it' and ordered it with a gig (which is I think the max it'll take).

This explains that the strange pricing on the UK store is a cock-up and will be fixed.

On or before 24 Feb for me. Lots of people are reporting having their ship dates pushed back, but mine's still 24/2.

It's for the best. I wouldn't want to give this to my colleagues. And I'll be more productive if I recuperate quickly.

Bloody lazy gitzoids, it's been sitting there since 2.16pm yesterday without moving! Come on! Stick it in a van or something!

Augh! Bloody Fedex tracking site does nothing all day, then at 10pm it says 'package picked up' somewhere in California, and they've moved back the expected delivery time to Monday afternoon - when I've gone and taken tomorrow off! Arse arse arse.

Ah well - I'll just use tomorrow for something else. :)

I am posting from my new Mac Mini! Hooray. Arrived today after all, just after breakfast. Nice one! Took hours to transfer all my stuff over from my powerbook, but now it's up and running.

First impressions: wonderfully small; in terms of operation, seems exactly the same as the powerbook, speed-wise. It's far noisier than I had expected - background hum at all times, quickly ratchets up to Ariane V levels when a few programmes are open. On that score I'm a bit disappointed, seeing as everyone had been saying how silent it is. The built-in speakers are absolutely dreadful, but that's to be expected. Photos will follow shortly... :)

    LOL! Tempting... :D

Did I mention that I'm totally impressed with it so far? The initial noise problems I had seem to have been solved by the 10.3.8 update. With 1 gig in there it's really chugging along very nicely with heavy multi-tasking. Networking with the powerbook is an absolute piece of piss. All in all, it was a great buy.

I did, yeah, though hand on heart I actually never switched it on *once* after the laptop arrived (did all my gaming on the Cube and GBA).

I must say I'm really pleased with the setup up there now. I've finally got all the drives linked up, two USB2 enclosures, two CoolMax firewire enclosures, I can mount them all without any headaches, and the powerbook can access them via the Mini over the WLAN. Peripherals all tucked away nicely. When I'm done for the evening I just put the Mini to sleep and tuck the keyboard under the display leaving acres of desk space. I went and got myself Chronosynch which is excellent for keeping the Mini and the powerbook synched. All in all, well chuffed, I'm finally approaching the ideal set-up (for me anyway).

Oh yeah, one thing I was wondering: this synching business - what actually gets synched? Does it just copy address books, bookmarks and documents folders and that over, or does it synchronise entire folders and stuff at your whim?
It synchs as little or as much as you like. It's actually pretty sophisticated. At the moment I have it set up to synch my iPhoto libraries and documents folder, in both directions. You can specify the direction, whether to synch deletions, what time gap to ignore with two identically-named files, basically it's as simple or complicated as you want to make it. Chronosync.

You sure mate? I'm looking at the Dell site and the 20" widescreen is exactly the same price as the Apple cinema display (£699 with tax).

edit - ah no, tell a lie, you probably mean this one. 20% cheaper, not 40, but it does have extra inputs (no firewire hub though). Definitely worth a look.

/strokes sexy cinema display with tiny bezel ;p

So, erm.. What can you do with these here funky mac minis?

I'm tempted to purchase one for a giggle, but know sweet fa about the buggers...

Convince me. (Any chance of getting a wireless logitech mouse working with it?)

Edit: See i'm supposed to buy one... What's the first email into my inbox this morning? 'Introducing Mac mini.' from apple!
    :)
Er, it's a computer. You do computery things with it. :)

Yes you'll get a wireless logitech mouse working with it.

Um, what else can I tell you? Would a soapy handjob help cement the deal? Cos if so then you're bang out of luck. :D

It'd be in the low-end Celeron range for a desktop (do they still make Celerons? I'm well out of it on the PC side). It'll do everything you need. Might not run state-of-the-art games, and it'll look a bit slow two or three years down the line. It's a budget machine. That said, processor speeds don't count for that much, RAM is more important. I've seen benchmarks that put the Mini only slightly behind the (theoretically much faster) 64-bit G5 iMac.
