Registered 18 years agoAre ipods really that popular at schools? I don't see any kids with them while bicycling towards the train station. Nor have I met any students at my university with them. (though stduentsa re poor, so that might be understandable). -

Well, things have changed a lot since I was young (which is only 10 years ago or so). If I see the presents that get bought at just christmas, it's more expensive than I would get at my birthday.
Maybe me and all my friends were just poor, but I don't think so, honestly. -

Is there something wrong with that ? -

OT, anybody read great apes by Will Self? That's a really great book about how the world would be if we were all apes of one kind or another. -

Rythm/MikeD.
Replace ipod with gameboy/mobile phone/[current trend].
You see how many 'kids' have mobiles right? You recall how many kids had gameboys?
MP3 players are the 'latest playground craze'. iPods are the 'must haves'... And it's not just kids... On my 'Tube run' a good 10% or more people are listening to 'something' (earphones), over half of those (although Apple says it's got 65% market share) are those tale tales 'white earbuds'.
Now that a pod costs -

She's coming up to 17.
Why will I be even more popular ?
(Like I was popular to start with !) -

Look - you're talking to someone who starts seething when he sees people wearing trainers and tracksuits as fashion items. Any kid of mine's going to know full well not to broach the subject of brands on top of that.gif)
Ooo... Sounds like a cheerfull time in your house! I bet you'll make them eat their veg (at gunpoint if nessesary).

I just mean, if it *can* be 'yes' sometimes, let them get spoilt sometimes. -

Registered 20 years agoYou know, maybe the layman does know about RAM and suchlike. How? They keep 'phoning us lot. The number of calls I've received from friends and family....well, lots. 'What machine, what hardware, what specs, will it do......I keep getting lots of pr0n popups. My homepage is set to something suspect and the wife's back soon.'
You get the idea. Now, I'm of a mind (as I do) to tell them to go get a Mac and to leave me the fuck alone.
My Mum is well pleased with the iMac she purchased from me. Then she goes and buys herself a dog-slow Tosh lappie 'cos she wanted one'. How do I know this? I walked through the door, sat down, and it was placed on my lap. No cup of tea, nothing. Stop it running slow! Hmmmmmmm. She'd only had it 2 days. Whereas she's used the iMac every day for months and I've only received one call on setting up broadband.

Fuck that! Get em slapped and get em to work!
j/k
I do believe in the concept of "spoiling" but I also believe that a £200 music player is a little too much to "spoil" a kid with.
these new Ipods are £70 IIRC...
Go on 'Dad'... Buy them one... ;P -

None in my youth
. My nephews father had one, which he bought for tetris. But he bought him a master system/snes.
I didn't say things are bad now btw, I just feel like they have slightly changed.
And I don't count mobile phones, as they are often useful. Unless the parents are taking the bills as well for phone calls, but most kids I know got prepaid ones and got a card once in a while and paying for the other costs themselves. (or a subscription with so many minutes a month, you get the drift) -

Point 1: they're not really iPods, are they?
Point 2: If I thought my kid deserved an MP3 player, they could have my hand me down Muvo - it cost me £13. There's no fecking way I'd spend more on the kid's items than I do on myself
I'm gonna save this thread and show it to any girlfriend of yours that gets serious with you and starts thinking about marrige/children...
/isn't really.
Besides... MP3 players are *so* 2004... Mobile phones that store 4 hours of film is going to be 2005's 'must have'

Registered 18 years agonot entirely correct, aac can have drm on it, and the stuff you buy from apple's itunes store does, but the aacs i rip of my own cds, or, you know, happen to find lying around online here and there, don't have any drm on them. -

Registered 20 years agoAnd you can beat the DRM by burning it onto CD. And then importing it again. -
eviltobz 2,609 posts
Registered 18 years agoor with a bit of software that manages to hack it out as i understand, can't remember what it's called, and apple clamped down on the distributors asap, but it got out and is on some p2p stuff. this technique will avoid the quality loss and hassle involved in burning and re-importing. -
It all looks very nice and fancy, and my first thought was "i want one!" - but once you think about it, both the mini mac and the ipod shuffle are totally fucking useless.
Why would PC owners want to buy something which isnt going to run the software/games they have, and isnt going to work very well alongside a windows PC. a budget Windows machine is cheaper and more practical.
if the mini mac was £100 cheaper, and the shuffle was £30 cheaper - i'd probably be sold
