How about an iPod Shuffle? It's only a wee thing but the downside is that it chooses the songs for you. Still, for £69 it might be worth considering.

If you're counting the pennies you're probably better off with something like this, it has a display and built in FM radio for less cash!

Edit: unfortunately that link isn't to its special price which is £58, I can't seem to get a direct link to that, the specials page is here.

People will get bored of this stuff soon enough, I'd presume.

"Oh, I wish I could play my own playlist like an album."
"Crap, why do I have to listen to this song? I should've deleted it from my collection."
"I WANTED METALLICA, NOT STEPPENWULF! THE HELL!"

Etc. etc. until the poor sods smash their iPods into the pavement. It's only $99, after all.

    I can't see the 1gig player, whizzo.

Bloody hell, a 19" LCD screen for £230!

Not 1GB, the 512MB above the 19" LCD.

Doesn't anyone else find that they don't use their MP3 player as much as they thought they would? I used to have one but ended up selling it to my brother cause I couldn't be bothered spending all the time ripping tracks to it.

I just use a bog standard CD player now which does the job perfectly.

The only time I really listen to music when I'm out of the house is in my car and as it's got an MP3 CD player I'm quite happy moving through the 12+ albums on one disc. I know if I bought an MP3 player I wouldn't use it.

I use my Zen almost all day at work - probably 30hr+ each week. Mostly on random play.

Ripping tracks is a pain tho. Its taken me over a year to rip 6000 tracks. I got my CDs mixed up as well and have no idea what I've not ripped.

My iPod goes with me everywhere. I've got a cheapo connector for the car, I plug it into my Mac at work, I listen to it when I'm doing the washing up, shopping at Tesco's - you name it. Definitely worth the money for me.

Anyway, I'm perfectly aware that there are cheaper and better mp3 players out there, but I noticed the iPod Shuffle, well, because it's actually cheap for an Apple product. Pity there had to be a downside on it though.

The iPod gets used every day and is my lifeline. Otherwise I'd have to endure Other People on the train.

    HELLO? I'M ON THE TRAIN.

    Etc.

I think you can specify what goes to the Shuffle. So if you're tending to listen to a specific number of tracks (which I reckon most of us do) just mix it up a bit.

I found that I used to use it all the time but since I moved to London and I have less time to rip new and old stuff then I just didn't use it. It sat in a draw for about four months. I listen to so many new CDs that I just wouldn't have the time to rip them. I can understand if you use it all the time, just wondered if I was the only one who has given one up?

I'm still struggling along with my Creative Jukebox 1; it was so cool a few years ago when I got it but it looks a bit dated and bulky nowadays. However the 6GB is still sufficient, and new batteries have got the battery life up to over 4 hours. I can't get in the car or commute on the metro without it.

My better half got me a 30gb Zen Xtra for christmas (after apparently having a nightmare researching them and trying to decide between that and an iPod). I love it, and I've filled about 10gb already, but I'm finding I'm just not using it :o(

She got me one of those little radio transmitters so I can use it in the car, but those things just aren't good enough. In order to get a really good signal you have to hold it in your hand to boost the signal, and even then the sound quality isn't great.

Furthermore I have most of my mp3s on my work PC as well, so I rarely feel the need to use it at work.

If I could use it in the car easily I'd use it a lot more, but as far as I can tell the only way to do that would be to see if a car audio specialist could find an AUX-in on the back of the factory fitted head unit in the car and drill an input into the dash somewhere :o\

I use my Zen every day, form leaving the house until I get to work and from leaving work until I get home - about an hour and a half every day. Then if I'm walking anywhere or whatever. I love it. Wish I'd got one years ago.

That's exactly how I'm feeling at the moment. I've uploaded about 4GB to my 4G so far, but am suffering from can't-be-arsed syndrome.

I mainly use the iPod at the gym and can't help but feel that the Shuffle would be more suited to my needs; smaller physical size, no HDD platters to bounce around, 'best-of' music subset...

I take it you have a in car CD player rather than tape?

They are quite rare, interestingly I've noticed the more expensive the CD player the less likely it is to have an aux.

That's right. Although those tape adaptor things would be a bit of a pain, I'd use one if I could.

That's what I'm hoping. It's the factory fitted Ford cd head unit, so my only option as far as I see it is to ask a car audio specialist to see if they can open it up and check for an AUX input (or see if they might know without having to look at it), then get them to plug a lead into it.

So err how can anyone suggest to people that they should buy the iPod shuffle with a good conscience?
What's good conscience got to do with anything? I'm thinking I might buy the GF a Shuffle for Valentine's Day so I can at least have a play with one.

Just got my mate to pick me up one from the Apple shop for the gf's birthday on Monday. Brilliant timing. I had no idea what to get her, then out of nowhere this appears.

I'll be sure to post packaging details :)

Pretty simple really for me. If I give the gf a muvo, she'd look confused, have a look at the instructions, make a very brief effort to get it working and stick it in a drawer.

I know what will happen when she gets this though.

And then you remove from drawer and have yourself a smaller MP3 player...

    Heh :)

Thing is, appaling as it is, branding means more to people than anything else. No matter how much you tell them that Apple do not make the best MP3 music player type things, they do not believe it. I have been trying to convinve my mate who really should know better to get a Rio for ages, but he won't. He never will.

    Branding is everything.
